The role of social networking has become very significant in society. Millions of people log into their Facebook and Twitter accounts daily. Even though it’s popularity is soaring, the increased role of social networking is not necessarily a positive quality. Many negative effects have been known to occur while using social networking websites. The effects range from small issues to much greater consequences. Although positive uses for social networking are present the negative aspects that occur simply cannot be ignored.
As social networking increases in popularity, more and more people join these websites. Ian Daly states, “Sure, it’s difficult to resist the allure of a site that everyone with Internet access seems to have embraced with open arms” (Daly 481). People, especially teenagers, quickly go to social networking websites because it is the cool thing to do. Teens often run to these websites to fulfill their desperate need to fit in, because no one wants to be labeled a loser. Many teens feel the need to amass hundreds of friends and follows on Facebook and Twitter to assert their popularity. From the most popular kids in school to the least popular, most teenagers engage in social media to connect with each other outside of school. Adolescents who are connected to social networking websites often ridicule those who are not. For example, teenagers who are not on Facebook or Twitter are commonly treated as social outcasts. Social networking has also made gossiping about the teens who are not connected easier. Thus, encouraging teenagers to conform to the normalcy of social networking, or suffer the consequences.

Hackers start spreading these viruses by taking over someone's social networking page and sending links to everyone of the victims friends. The links often include grotesque images of dead animals and poragraphic content. Whenever someone clicks one of the links sent will activate the virus and essentially give access of his or her account to the hacker. The hacker then repeats the steps taken to receive access of the page he or she is intruding upon. Thus, creating a cycle of viruses that may affect the computer or device used to open the link. These security issues have impactful outcomes and have yet to be completely corrected.

Exhibiting the highest standards of honesty and integrity are imperative for the protection of public health, safety, and welfare.2 When ethical principles are compromised, the risk of endangering others greatly increases, especially with mission and safety critical systems. Extreme consequences include not only complete mission failures and great financial loss, but also fatalities. Though most engineering accidents are associated with aerospace, mechanical, civil, or even electrical engineering (due to the nature of these disciplines such that the end products are actually tangible objects), an increasing number of accidents in software engineering have brought attention to the importance of ethics in information technology.
In a study of 262 business undergraduate students Basuray et al. (2010) asked students to provide an ethical judgment rating before and after a semester of ethics education. They taught students a variety of theories to see if they would use them in an ethical situation. Their finding showed that no specific ethical theory was capable of giving students solutions, however by using bits of all of them it can help find an answer. Although this study showed that teaching ethics does not completely change the ethical mindset of students, it does show that students take the information on board and use bits of all theories to help them make ethical decisions.
Most common ethical issues an engineer faces are that providing a quality product at a reasonable cost and safety of the public. At time, clients want more than they are willing to pay for, in this case engineer must decide whether to shorten the design to save money and time or not to take the job they offered. The ethical engineer modules or designs are not only for the safety and low manufacture cost, but also for reduce manufacture cost for the entire design. The professional engineer’s duty is to find the correct manufacture cost and whether the product will be safe to use. Often times, an engineer may experience a situations in which they can’t get the client or manager satisfied of the product. In order to maintain an ethical demeanor in such cases, an engineer may have to refuse to approve the project design.
From the start of this course, I have kept asking myself, what is the true purpose of emphasising engineering ethics? For people who always follow the profession of ethics, iterating such thing again and again will only bring them boredom. On the contrary, for those people who enjoy a completely free life, the code of ethics will not be able to constrain them even a little because they don 't care about rules from the very beginning. Therefore, from this perspective, as its biggest target, engineers who might defy engineering ethics will not be influenced by such notion. Users of online social media services tend to share copious amounts of personal information on online profiles, these same users control who can or cannot see their information by utilizing privacy settings.
