Some of the many gender roles that are often fed to children at a young age is a matter of simple colors: boys are blue, girls are pink. Boys play with trucks, girls play with dolls. Seems harmless enough, right? Actually, it is found that forcing gender roles onto a child at such an early age does nothing but limit them and their right for social expression (Ressler). Even if they are told they are too young to know what they like, not giving them a choice is the worst thing a parent can do. When you turn on the T.V. often times you see a striking similarity in all the women. For the most part, they are all skinny with a bit of curve and most girls (even below eight!) think that is the body they should have. I know of this personally, not being able to look just like the girl on the screen caused a lot of self hate towards young eight year olds. Girls, young children, even with a loving family who wants and allows the child to do anything they want, will still be pressured by society to be certain ways. Especially when girls become teens and become more independent, they focus on what their friends, and society thinks of them rather than family. Another common gender role for girls and women is their body. Large breast, big butt, a perfect hourglass with a thin waistline is often pushed onto them. And for those who cannot simply achieve that, often lack confidence in their bodies. Body types aren’t a one size fits all. There are many different types of bodies, however, without representation, little girls might think that they are different from the norm.
