Did you know that over one million people injure themselves each year because of slipping and falling? 300,000 people are injured each year from slipping and falling in the workplace and 15% of workplace deaths are due to the injuries caused by slipping and falling. Slips and falls can be easily prevented by the store or business with anti slip treatments, securing electrical cords, removing rugs or mats or other tripping hazards, routine maintenance, and cleaning up spills as soon as they happen. There are many reasons as to why you could slip and fall and those causes and factors include: • Water • Ice • Snow • Grease or oil • Objects in the way • Floor cleaner • Uneven surfaces • Areas with lots of foot traffic • Unstable areas • Ladders • Stairs • Areas prone to wetness or spills • Bad lighting If you do slip and fall you should ask yourself the following: • What caused the slip and fall? • If the floor was slippery, why was it slippery? • Was it more slippery then normal? • Was there any warning that the floor was slippery? • Did the owner or landlord know abo...
Three of them are: does the patient have a history of falls, is the patient at risk of falling, and to identify the cause of a fall (Recommendations 2011). The first recommendation the healthcare team should consider is, does the patient have a history of falls? During the initial assessment the healthcare team should ask the patient and family members present about fall history. Carefully examining the patient's chart for any indicators of past falls is also recommended. These can be clear indicators of the presence of fall risks. Once a patient has fallen once, the likelihood of a second fall is greatly increased. The second recommendation the healthcare team should consider is, is the patient at risk of falling? Both extrinsic and intrinsic factors should be considered. Examination of the patient's chart for a list of current medications being taken, fall history, any underlying conditions, neurological status, and psychological status should be done. Previous studies have shown that psychotropic, diuretic, digoxin, and Class 1a antiarrhythmic medications are associated with significantly increased risks of falls (Kehinde, Pope, & Amella, 2011). An examination of environmental status should also be done. For example, looking at lightning, cords on the floor, slippery floors, whether the call light is accessible, and whether the room
There are many reasons why a floor could be less than safe; the fact is that usually a slippery floor is an easy fix. Anti-slip tape is almost always the go to solution; it is cost effective and can help make any surface a safer surface.
The leading cause of injury to nursing and hospital staff is the repeated manual lifting, and lifting and transferring of patients. This increasing incident rates cost to healthcare organizations. “Safe Patient Handling” programs have become one of the top initiatives for healthcare organizations. With the help of this program, work-related injuries and injuries due to patient falls can be reduced. Hill-Rom’s high technologies, processes, and tools assist hospitals to enhance outcomes for patients.
A broken bone is one of the worst and most painful injuries you can suffer. Broken bones can be caused by many different things such as falling on it or even a hard-twisting motion. Bones can be easily viewed as a solid, non-working part of our body where tissue just sits, but your skeletal system is as much a living part as your organs. Your body stores minerals in the compact bone, and stores fat in the yellow marrow. Your bone also has the ability to produce red blood cells in the inner part, the red marrow. Your bones can do many great things, including healing themselves. The process of healing themselves is complex and can take a lengthy period of time.
A fall is an “untoward event which results in the patient coming to rest unintentionally on the ground” (Morris & Isaacs, 1980). When it comes to patient safety in health care, there isn’t any subject that takes precedence. Patient falls are a major cause for concern in the health industry, particularly in an acute-care setting such as a hospital where a patient’s mental and physical well being may already be compromised. Not only do patient falls increase the length of hospital stays, but it has a major impact on the economics of health care with adjusted medical costs related to falls averaging in the range of 30 billion dollars per year (Center for Disease Control [CDC], 2013). Patient falls are a common phenomenon seen most often in the elderly population. One out of three adults, aged 65 or older, fall each year (CDC, 2013). Complications of falls are quite critical in nature and are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries including traumatic brain injuries and fractures. A huge solution to this problem focuses on prevention and education to those at risk. ...
Yates K. M., & Creech Tart. (2012). Acute care patient falls: evaluation of a revised fall
Fall prevention is one of the biggest safety concerns regarding geriatric and pediatric patients in a health care setting. Falls occur almost every day in hospitals and nursing home settings because of a variety of reasons, from weak bones and throw rugs to toys lying in the floor. Tumbles can have grave effects on a child because they tend to play and not pay attention to their surroundings which causes them to take a spill. The consequences can be even worse for an older adult that suffers a fall giving their age and health concerns, this gives the elderly a disadvantage when falls transpire. Most people can help prevent falls from occurring but OTs (Occupational Therapist) are an elite group of people with knowledge and skills that train,
When taking steps to analyze and apply intervention strategies for falls, we must examine the factors that cause these occurrences. There are numerous reasons that falls occur, such as intrinsic and or extrinsic risk factors. Intrinsic risk factors for falls may be due to changes that are part of the normal aging process and acute or chronic conditions. According to Zheng, Pan and Hua et al. (2013), about 35-45 percent of individuals who are usually older than 65 years and other 50 percent of the elderly individuals report cases of fall every year. Extrinsic factors are those related to physical environment such as lack of grab bars, poor condition of floor surfaces, inadequate or improper use of assistive devices (Currie). Patient falls is not an easy thing to eliminate. With many clinical challenges, there’s no easy answer to the challenges posed by patient falls; howe...
There are many social problems that exist in the world today, which includes but do not limits to self-identity and racism. However, they somehow go unnoticed because at times people conform to what society thinks is the way to live. In my opinion, people believe they should act or feel a certain way because of what is broadcast on television, featured in magazines, and even brought into the limelight by celebrities. After viewing the movie Crash, in my opinion, the movie targets on going social problems that are constantly being swept under the rug to this present day. I deem Crash a race movie because it forces the audience to question their own moral values.
Workplace injuries are primarily responsible for a large number of workers being absent at work and disability. The occurrence of workplace injury varies from the occupation and the industry of the worker. There are many risk factors that are associated with workplace injuries such as age, experience, shift work, consumption of alcohol, fatigue etc. (Swaen et al. 2002).
Stroke has been implicated as the third leading cause of death1. It’s occurrence increases with age, with two-thirds of stroke victims being over 65 years old2. The elderly population is increasing, with 20% of the U.S. population expected to be over 65 years old by the year 20303. As future dentists, these are the people we will one day be treating in our practices. Therefore, it is important for us to be able to properly prevent, recognize, and manage the diseases of the elderly population.
Historically, the nursing profession has been actively involved in the health promotion and disease prevention among the general public. However, while caring for others, nurses often neglect their personal safety, which ultimately results in the high level of work-related injuries. Failure to timely address risk factors for nursing can have dire consequences for patient outcomes, since it is often associated with increased medication errors and patient falls, poor quality of care, and permanent disability of the nursing staff (Stokowski, 2014).
Freud defines parapraxes which are also known as slips, as “faulty actions.” He focuses on the ‘slip of the tongue’ which are errors made during speech. Among the explanations for such parapraxes are physical causes such as exhaustion and excitement, however Freud also accounts for people who are in their normal states. In their normal states, people may suffer ‘slips of the tongue’ due to relation in the sound of words and people can also be provoked into the ‘slip.’ However, unlike sound relation ‘slips of the tongue’ which may result in an irrational statement, Freud examines ‘slips of the tongue’ which produces a sentence that make complete sense but is the opposite of the intentional statement. This he believed had not been investigated
Niagara Falls reigns as one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of New York. Known as a series of three parts that connect the border between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls holds a lot of tourism potential as the world’s second largest waterfall at 3,950 feet wide (Conservative Institute). Even so, many people venture from all over the world to see its wonders and stare in awe at its grandness and beauty. The three parts that together make up this major landmark include the Bridal Veil Falls, the American Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. Both the Bridal Falls and the American Falls lie completely on United States territory, while the Horseshoe Falls lies on the border between the United States and Canada (History.com Staff, 2010). Over the years, Niagara Falls has been a subject of many topics, including its formation, discovery,
Accidents happen all the time whether we know it or not. Some could possibly be avoided and others may not. I was a young girl, who didn’t truly grasp the concept of life and death. Every time I was upset about something, I would think about ending my own life. However, through one horrifying incident, that silly thought of mine completely vanished. Thanks to that specific mishap, the way I perceived life and death has in turn, changed entirely anew.
