Before the Civil War, slavery was at its peak in the Southern states such as Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. During this period life as a slave owner was luxurious, but life as a slave was excruciating. Numerous slaves during this time period were treated inhumanly in ways that normal people couldn’t even begin to comprehend. Slaves before the Civil War were whipped, raped, burned, and even branded. Many slaves in the Southern states during this era saw the torment to much and contemplated suicide such as Fountain Hughes who stated, “If I thought, had any idea, that I’d ever be a slave again, I’d take a gun an’ jus’ end it all right away because your nothing but a dog.” Just like the brutality seen in the South before the Civil War slaves …show more content…

In the film, there were various scenes that accurately depicts what slavery was like back in the 1800’s. In one of the scenes, a women slave is seen being whipped because she broke an egg. Just like how this lady was being whipped as punishment, the most common punishment for slaves back in the 1800’s was whipping. In another scene, Jamie Foxx’s wife is seen being branded as punishment which was another popular method of punishment for slaves back in the early 1800’s. In the film, there was also a scene where Jamie Foxx entered a bar and was ask to leave. Although Jamie Foxx didn’t leave, this scene accurately displays the discrimination slaves endured during the 1800’s even if they were set free. Lastly, in another scene, Jamie Foxx’s’ wife is seen trapped in a hot box for attempting to run away. Just like how Jamie Foxx’s’ wife try to run away many slaves back in the early 1800’s did the same and many failed. Although the movie, Django Unchained, fairly depicts the horrendous life of a slave during the early 1800’s, it still shouldn’t be considered a move to be watch to gain historical knowledge because it contains numerous historical …show more content…

General audiences should watch films to gain historical knowledge because it will allow them to obtain new information by simply watching a film. Although many films contain historical inaccuracies, it is still better for a person to gain a little new knowledge rather than gaining none. The producers and writers of films should not have the obligation to provide factually correct film because their number one goal is entertainment and money. Producers are always going to focus on entertainment because that’s the point of watching a film, rather than focusing on something that may not provide entertainment. Although films may contain historical inaccuracies, individuals can still enjoy films because they provide entertainment and a chance to gain a little knowledge. Even if films contain minor historical errors, individuals, for the most part, can still learn and enjoy the main historical ideas of the films. Although some films such as Django Unchained shouldn’t be watched to obtain historical knowledge, there are many other films that should still be watch to gain historical
