This article discusses the reasons why software implementation problems are so common and how applying six sigma methodology can do to address these problems. According to the author the two most common causes of software project failures are customer requirement problems and estimating problems. He offers two case studies as examples of how six sigma can address these aspects of software implementation. The first case study discusses some of the ways six sigma can help with customer requirements, and the second case discusses the role of six sigma in schedule estimating.
In the first case the problem with software implementation was that management was not clear on what their customer requirements were. Six sigma has many tools that enable project teams figure out customer requirements. It does not begin with asking the customer what their requirements are. It begins by six sigma practitioners asking themselves what we need to learn. This thought process is a completely different mindset that leads to different outcomes. Implementation of this mindset include beginning with the customer’s goals or business objectives. This orientation devotes careful attention to desired outcomes in financial terms. Even though I have no real experience in software development I know that dealing with software is not easy and can be very frustrating. Six sigma incorporates many tools that help organizations determine their customer requirements. Before reading this article I thought six sigma was just about statistics and improving processes. It is so much more than that. It’s also about managing all given information or data quantitative or not. Six sigma can help with customer requirements and also with understanding processes capability.
