Site-Specific Immunomodulator: A Novel Treatment for Crohn’s Disease
Introduction
Crohn’s Disease is one of the most debilitating diseases of our time. As modern medicine evolves and advances are made, new treatments are introduced now on a frequent basis. During this assignment, we have been tasked to choose an article related to biology and to discuss the article and how it relates to our course.
Summarize the article in one (1) or more paragraphs, using your own words. Be sure to identify the article using an in-text citation in the body of the paper, as well as a reference in the reference section.
The Site-Specific Immunomodulator (SSI) article discusses the scientific efforts of Qu Biologics to find a successful treatment for Crohn’s

The article directly relates to this course as Qu Biologics is attempting to reverse the course of a condition that is currently incurable through science and medicine. Qu Biologics the SSI drug, Human Monocytic Cell Line THP-1 cell cultures were used when conducting this test (Bressler et al, 2015). Specific cells were seeded, and PMA were added to trigger differentiation to macrophages (Bressler et al, 2015). RNA was extracted from the cultures to study the effectiveness of testing. These particular methods are in line with our discussions for the past few weeks and methods mentioned in our textbook referencing RNA modifications (Starr, Evers, & Starr, …show more content…
I’m currently receiving Entyvio infusion monthly for Crohn’s disease. I may inquire about SSI to see if it has been approved for use today.
Discuss your opinion on how research on this topic should be funded. State whether you think taxpayer monies should support research on this topic or whether such research in this area should be funded by the private sector. Rate the importance of research on this topic, relative to other areas of research.
I would be the first to admit that medical treatments are expensive. The same would hold true for the costs that are associated with medical research. I think that some of the research should be funded by organizations like the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. Many organizations raise funds and use their charitable contributions as reasons to solicit donations. Therefore, a contribution in part would be appropriate.
Additional funding should come from the taxpayers. Many people who have been diagnosed with this condition have paid unto a Social Security fund that they will never see. Not to mention that they are taxpayers as well. For this reason, money from taxpayers would be more appropriate than from the private

1. Identify and explain the ONE specific branch of biology involved in the article - it will be one of the branches listed beside the article title. Support your answer by using specific examples from the article to demonstrate how it relates to that branch. There should be a clear relationship between the branch you chose and the article in your explanation. Explain in your own words without having to quote directly from the article. (At least 3 sentences – 3 points)
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition with significant relapses and remissions and an increased mortality. A Norwegian study has shown that after 10 year the colectomy rate was 9.8%.19 The IBSEN study showed that 83% of people initially had reoccurring disease. Although 50% were shown to be symptomless after five years.19 This study also demonstrated that 20% of people with proctitis or left-sided colitis progressed to extensive colitis.19
In America today we have experienced the greatest advances in the fields of medicine since the middle ages. Diseases such as polio, the bubonic plague, and small pox have virtually been eradicated. With the advances in the pharmaceutical industry, drugs are being manufactured that offer relief and hope to patients that once had no hope. However with all of these advances, we still have a ways to go. We are still trying to find cures for diseases such as Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s, diabetes and even cancer to name a few. So what can we do and how can we address these debilitating and often life threatening diseases? Are their possible cures and what measures do we need to take to get there? The answer, the missing component, is looking
What are the main points of contention surrounding this issue? Be sure to thoroughly discuss contrasting perspectives and the underlying reasons explaining the different positions people take on this topic.
Choose one of the following topics and write a well-organized essay with evidence supporting the statements you set forth. Your response should be two pages, double spaced with a 12 font in Times New Roman:
Justify your research question and explain why this topic has been chosen. Why is it significant and worthy of a discussion?
Unending weakness, untimely maturing, joint inflammation, poor skin and hair quality, danger, hypersensitivities, growth, and numerous different ailments can all outcome from flawed assimilation since poor processing meddles with supplement breakdown, ingestion and digestion system; permits poisons to stay in the body and aggregate; and over anxieties the body. The gastrointestinal framework assumes a focal part in safe framework homeostasis. It is the primary course of contact with the outer environment and is over-burden each day with outside jolts, now and again hazardous as pathogens (microscopic organisms, protozoa, parasites, infections) or harmful substances, in different cases exceptionally helpful as nourishment or commensal vegetation. The critical position of the gastrointestinal framework is affirmed by the colossal measure of invulnerable cells that dwell inside it. Without a doubt, gut-related lymphoid tissue (GALT) is the noticeable piece of mucosal-related lymphoid tissue (MALT) and speaks to right around 70% of the whole safe framework; also, around 80% of plasma cells [mainly immunoglobulin An (IgA)- bearing cells] live in GALT. GALT communicates entirely with gastrointestinal capacities in a dynamic way; for example, by expanding intestinal penetrability in replay
Government funding has proven to be essential and effective in the fight against cancer. On December 23, 1971 President Nixon signed the National Cancer Act, which promised to finance the quest for the cure. Financial aid such as this has directly benefitted survival rates for those diagnosed with cancer. Forty years ago before such funding was provided, when a child was diagnosed with cancer most physicians considered the patient to be terminally ill and supportive care was almost the only thing offered to the family. However over the last few decades, due to research and participation in clinical trials performed due to funding, the majority of children are cured. Because of the creations of new drugs and therapies as a result of government aid, the survival rat...
It can establish government subsidies for independent researchers who are fighting the war on cancer. It can increase the taxable deduction for people who choose to donate money to find a cure. Finally it can help make the drugs and other hospital services more affordable. The deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, Dr. Leonard Lichtenfeld asserts “cancer shows that poverty remains one of the most potent a carcinogen-rivaling tobacco and obesity-as we have ever seen.” His argument is a powerful one. He’s claiming that those with more money can potentially avoid dying or prolong their life. Lichtenfeld continues “sitting right in front of our noses is the fact that...at least 37% of cancer deaths in people between the ages of 27 and 64 could be avoided right now.” If the government helps those with less money afflicted by this awful disease, that 37% could potentially be a lot lower. Lichtenfeld is clearly a leader in his field, so his comments are valuable as a source, but alarming nevertheless. It’s startling to think that in this day in age, a cancer patient could potentially not receive the needed treatment because he can’t pay for the

So one is going about your business, doing your normal routine and it’s time for a doctor’s visit. You go in there, the doctor performs his regular examine and sends you home. The next phone call you get from your doctor is a tragic one. They have just diagnosed you with a disease that has a low survival rate. And so begins the medical treatments. These treatments could last weeks, months, or years, during which you will face some of the most difficult choices. Some of our family members or friends have heard these words before and unfortunately doctors can only do so much to help, and the cost of treatments are on the rise. According to the NY Times, you could be paying up to a million dollars in one year just to pay for treatments, drugs,
Inflammatory bowel disease is a life long disease, and it particularly targets the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), which consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach small intestine, large intestine (appendix, cecum, colon (ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid), and rectum), and anus. The gastrointestinal tract is very important to the human body; some of its functions include mechanical and chemical digestion of food, the movement of food and waste from mouth to anus, secretion of enzymes and mucus, and the absorption of nutrients. These are some reason why it’s so destructive when this part of the body becomes impaired or even damaged.
