First, I would like to express a deep and sincere gratitude to my wife, Michelle Dodge, and two children, Langston Whyte and Tennyson Whyte. It has been a long and tedious road finally to complete this paper. They have suffered not having me around because I was spending long hours doing research and writing this thesis. The research and writing process was sometime long and drawn out and at other times fun and engaging. A special thank you also goes out to my major thesis reader Prof. Parsa, who had the right blend of patience and discipline to keep me motivated and inspired, you are a true inspiration sir.
My mother always believed in me and gave me inspiration when I felt like giving up. My aunt gave me the tools I need

Singapore is one of the only countries to move from “Third world to First world.” This is because Singapore used bold and novel strategies in the initial stage of its development. Most countries and peoples were unaccustomed to these strategies. One such brazen and unexpected move that Singapore made was to refuse International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans. At that time, it was unheard of for a developing country not to take IMF loans because these loans were synonymous with development. In addition, it is important to acknowledge that the colonization of Singapore had some part in the creation of its economic model. Therefore, the colonial and occupation history is important to set the foundation for its economic …show more content…
Approximately ninety-eight percent of people who identify as South Sudanese voted to have an autonomous government, separating them from their more developed neighbor, North Sudan. South Sudan now has its own government and laws and faces an uphill battle. Already South Sudan exhibits four out of the five elements that Paul Collier said countries usually have before they are doomed to fail. He pointed out in his book “Bottom Billion” that land-locked countries with a history of conflict, bad neighbors, rich resources, and poor governance are usually destined to fail. On the other hand, with the disciplined use of the Singapore economic model, South Sudan might be able to overcome the challenges Paul Collier points out in his book. The Singapore economic model will be vital to the development of South Sudan because it is one of the few successful models with the ability to transform an underdeveloped country, which has been left to fail into a booming world economic power. Singapore has a developed economy that can outplay many developed economic zones. The open free market environment, stable prices and political stability have been considered as key factors for a successfully developed economy of Singapore. Selection of Singapore is
Today Malaysia and Singapore are geographically the same rich tropical and dynamic economy, with the same geographic problems. A health problem, with some endemic malaria, has been checked, which transformed their economy and way of life by understanding their environment. Almost eradicating malaria from their land shows what an understanding of geography and history can do.
This is a credible article; it seems that it is researched thoroughly and thoughtfully. Overall this article highlights my topic fairly well, and did meet my expectations; the author’s conclusion ended strong and summarizes the article greatly. Still, this article is not much different than my other twelve articles with the exclusion of one. In this article and others not all sources have different points of view and only one has done that.
The one who influenced me to keep striving and to have determination is my father. Although, my father and mother are not together
Because she always motivate me to go follow and fight for what I want. I believe that be who are I’m today is such as great inspiration because I wasn’t born here and I almost graduate from college and I have the best family and education value that one can have in this life. For example, I have to take CAT-W test and I feel so disappointment about myself because I already take three times and I fail. But my mom tells me that she knows how I’m and who I want to be in the future that never stop look for my dreams and she always going to be there for me. I think that we you know yourself even when people tell you that you cant do you still be there try to reach your goals

Comparative advantage means that an industry, firm, country or individual are able to produce goods and services at a lower opportunity cost than others which are also producing the same goods and services. Also, in order to be profitable, the number in exports must be higher than the number in import. From the diagram we seen above, Singapore is seen to have a comparative advantage in some services. The services are Transport, Financial, business management, maintenance & Repair and Advertising & Market Research, etc. These export services to other countries improve the balance of payment. On the other side, Singapore is seen to have a comparative disadvantage in some services. The services are Travel, Telecommunications, Computer & Information,
Singapore’s education journey can be divided into three broad phases namely the Survival-Driven Education (1959 – 1978), Efficiency-Driven Education (1979 -1996) and the Ability-Based, Aspiration-Driven Education which Singapore has adopted since late 1990s. The education policies have evolved to address the context of the country’s stage of development and the challenges it faces at each point. More recently, we are transiting into a knowledge-based economy to face external challenges such as market volatility, increasing globalisation and rapid technological advancement. As Singapore does not have its own natural resources, it is a necessity to develop the people to their fullest to survive. And as the future becomes more volatile with rapid

In conclusion, the compilations of writing in this book give me an excellent starting point for the final paper. Each section is well written and although a little wordy at times, they are fairly easy to read and understand. I believe the authors have completely valid sources that they used to compose their sections from, thus helping the book’s ethos to be significant and accurately put together.

The last was the welcoming of the education. In the early days of Singapore, the country was doing a lot of manufacturing and assembling goods. This particular industry grew stagnant around 1960’s at around 12% of the GDP. Also during this time the post-war baby boom and free immigration policies resulted in a population growth of around 4.4% annually and that got paired with an unemployment rate that grew to 9.2% around 1966. This made the government realize that rising unemployment rate was a problem that needed solving urgently. Because of the lack of resources, the government also knew that human capital was going to be its biggest resource and thus in order to shift to an export economy an education system had to be put in place.
Singapore as a country has had various transformations throughout its history, however the period 1950 and 1970 was quite critical. Much of these changes had a lot to do with the development of trade and manufacturing. This is without forgetting the financial sector where the intention was to come up with a financial hub that could be used in economic development. Looking at the case of Singapore, we would say that it is a productive economy with a very high market competition. This observation has been further clarified by the Swiss International Institute for Management Development, going with their report that they released in the year 2001 (Chellaraj & Mattoo, 2009). In this study, we intend to evaluate the case of political economy of development in Singapore and examine the tensions between the state and various economic institutions. In additions to examining this institution, we would also like to examine how these variables have contributed towards the attainment of favorable growth rates and economic prosperity.
