Did you know Americans lie at least once a day. The play movie 10 Things I Hate About you and Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare both show how greatly examples of deception. This is shown by many of the different characters in each of the stories. And how greatly they impact the way in them and other characters in the story. In both cases, the characters continuously lie to one another to get what they want. Deception is a big factor that the characters heavily remain on in both Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare and the movie 10 things I hate about you.
The first piece point comes when both Lucentio/Cameron try teaching Bianca a foreign language. The example form Taming of the Shrew comes when Lucentio tries to teach Bianca

Latin, while he doesn’t know anything and only teaches and he relies heavily on her about the art of love. A line from the play is “I read that I profess, The Art to Love.” This ties with the idea because he really just wants her all to himself, while trying to get her to fall in love with him because he truly doesn’t know any Latin and only teaches her about love. A piece of evidence from the movie 10 things I hate about you is when Cameron tries to teach Bianca french. A line from the movie is when Michael says “Do you speak French?” Then Cameron responds with “Well no. But I will.” This ties with deception because Cameron truly doesn’t know French and relies on the book to teach Bianca. These both tie together because both Cameron & Lucentio try to Bianca a foreign language that they don’t know so in result they have to rely on books to do their teaching. The next idea comes when Hortensio/Joey deceives Kate. The second idea comes when Hortensio/Joey deceives Kate by not truly teaching her about music or not telling her stuff she should know.
The example from Taming of the Shrew is when Hortensio deceives Bianca by being her music teacher because he really is just faking his music lessons. The evidence is “The base is right; ’tis the base knave that jars. How fiery and forward our pedant is! Now, for my life, the knave doth court my love. Pedascule, I’ll watch you better yet.” This ties with the idea because he really just wants her to fall in love with him. The example from the movie 10 things I hate about you is when joey deceives Bianca by never telling Bianca about his relationship with Kat. “The evidence is Kat indicates with a nod and a raised eyebrow that they went all the way, Then Bianca said How is it possible that I did not know about this?” This ties with the idea because he wants to have Bianca for himself and expects this without telling her and hoping to keep it a secret then telling her and having her understand. These both tie together because both Hortensio and Joey expect Bianca to fall in love with them without doing everything to the best of their ability. The next idea comes when Petruchio/Patrick lie about a variety of different
things. The third point comes when Petruchio/Patrick lie about many different things. The example from the play Taming of the Shrew is when Petruchio lies to Kate about the bed, food, & clothes not being good enough. The evidence from the play is “Hortensio, say thou wilt see the tailor paid. Go, take it hence. Begone, and say no more.” This ties with the idea because Kate trust Petruchio when really he’s lying to her because the stuff is good. The example from the movie 10 things I hate about you is when patrick decepted many people about the rumors of himself. Kat says “Why would I be afraid of you?” Then Patrick says well, most people are. This ties with the idea because Patrick prefers people to be afraid of him than knowing the real him. These both go together because both Petruchio and Patrick expect people to believe what they say no matter how crazy. Deception is a big factor that the characters heavily rely on in Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare and the movie 10 things I hate about you in hopes to get what they want. The first point is when Cameron and Lucentio try to teach Bianca a foreign language they don’t know and rely heavily on the books they use. The second point is when Hortensio and Joey expect Bianca to love them when she doesn’t know the truth about them. The third point is when Petruchio and Patrick lie to Kate and many other people in hopes to get what they want. The play movie 10 Things I Hate About you and Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare both show how examples of deception. And how much they affect the characters in the story. In both cases, the characters continuously lie to each other to get what they want or in hopes who they want.
The term deceit is defined as an inclination or practice of misleading other people through lies or trickery. The word deceit has garnered a negative connotation in many people’s minds as it is commonly associated with ill intention and reserved for the antagonists of the story. However, the theme of deceit can take on a positive connotation because the authors can use deceit as a way to convey a critique of society during their time period. The author Molière, regarded as one of the greatest writers in the French language, published a comedy stage play titled Tartuffe in 1664 during the reign of Louis XIV. Tartuffe was a significant work because it criticized religious fanaticism in French society by using a form of deceit called hypocrisy,
Have you ever told a lie to protect yourself or someone you love? People lie for their own purposes. Some people lie for themselves or for their close one. They depend on the lies so much that they do not care that their lies might hurt others. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, almost all the characters lie for their own desires and to protect their own interests. Even though lies are forbidden in their religion, some people are blind to understand the punishment of lying. The concept of lying to save oneself is also evident in “Fear Was Reason For Lying About Shooting, Woman Says” by Mary Spicuzza. The article highlights how a woman hid the truth about witnessing a murder just for the sake of her own life. Another article, “The Truth
Both Stephanie Ericsson’s essay “The Way We Lie” and William F. Buckley, Jr.’s essay “Why Don’t We Complain” analyze different ways people use lies to help and hurt themselves in their daily lives and how lies influence American culture. Through personal experience and examples Ericsson showed the way people lie to get what they want or to look more lovely. She showed that it is almost impossible to eliminate lies from people’s lives, how American culture has adopted many lies, and how so much is based on simple, "harmless" lies. In Buckley’s essay, he is uncomfortable that in some situations people do not complain. They could use their complaints to make some change. When people are used to keeping silent avoid problems or waiting someone else to solve the problem.
In Arthur Miller’s book “The Crucible” there is an inadequacy of honesty which is a very important trait for everyone to learn. In this essay I am writing to prove that the paucity of honesty is negative and was very prevalent in Salem, and that very few people remained truthful throughout the Salem Witch Trials. The dishonesty in The Crucible would soon lead to the deaths and imprisonment of many residents in Salem. Those accused would lie and accuse other people of staying out of trouble from the authorities, but this took the lives of many innocent victims. In Miller's book Dishonesty is expressed by almost everyone included in The Crucible such as Abigail, Mary, and Elizabeth.
The first example of deception we see is with the characters of Beatrice and Benedick. These two characters provide the humor throughout Shakespeare's comedy; their repartees and soliloquies tend to leave the reader smiling and anxious for more dialogue between them. Beatrice and Benedick have had a relationship prior to their battles of wit to which she alludes to in Act 2: "Marry, once before he won it for me with false dice; / Therefore your grace may well say I have lost it’ (2.1.265-7). We see that at one time in the past they had a relationship that somewhere went wrong. The deception of Beatrice and Benedick comes courtesy of Don Pedro in Act 2. In this scene, Don Pedro, out of pure amusement, asks Leonato, the governor of Messina, and Claudio, a lord attending on Don Pedro, for help to bring these two together: "If we can do this, Cupid is no / longer an archer; his glory shall be ours…" (2.1.363-4). In Act 2.3, Claudio, Pedro, and Leonato, see Benedick in the garden and decide that that is the right moment for them to try and trick Be...
Telling the truth can have some consequences, but a lie can cause more damage in a relationship once it has been figured out. People believe that by just lying, a problem is solved, but problems start when lies are told. Lying destroys relationships and truth builds honest relationships which, can last forever. In both F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Rob Marshall’s Chicago, characters lie because they feel that it is easier. However, lying leads to a downward- spiral. The society we live in can either lead us to a complicated relationship with the truth or easygoing. The problem with constantly telling lies is that it starts off with one, then leads to another until everything you say is a lie. Being truthful
The first instance of trickery and deception is when Don Pedro tells Claudio that he will woo Hero for Claudio to marry her in Act I Scene I. Tricking her to believe that Don Pedro himself has feelings for Hero:
When initially asked about the morality of lying, it is easy for one to condemn it for being wrong or even corrupt. However, those asked are generally guilty of the crime on a daily basis. Lying is, unfortunately, a normal aspect of everyday life. In the essay “The Ways We Lie,” author Stephanie Ericsson makes note of the most common types of lies along with their consequences. By ordering the categories from least to most severe, she expresses the idea that lies enshroud our daily lives to the extent that we can no longer between fact and fiction. To fully bring this argument into perspective, Ericsson utilizes metaphor, rhetorical questions, and allusion.
I will not deal in lies,’” (Miller,1272). In the play, the people who have confessed to being witches are lying because they want to live and/or get rid of people they do not like. Even given proper evidence that the so-called “witches” are lying, the court does not believe them. Humans can only take so much until they break the law.
The value of manipulation and misleading for personal gain has proven to be rewarding for multiple people throughout history. Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare, exemplify characters and atmospheres that posses these manipulating qualities through personal gain. Othello is a play w...
Baptista tells Petruchio to win her love. Petruchio acts and has a one to one debate with Katerina, Petruchio does not win her love but tells Katerina he will marry her anyways, resulting in Petruchio tricking Baptista in winning Katerina’s love” (Shakespeare, Act 2 Scene 1 Lines 110-308). The paraphrase examines Petruchio’s increased desire to marry Katerina after being told about the dowry or money involved by attempting to win her love and deceiving Baptista of achieving to win Katerina’s. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick has an increased desire to attempt again and date Kat after being offered more money. Patrick takes the money and takes her out to different places, however, Patrick ends up falling in love with Kat and money began to no longer play a role for him showing a difference between the play Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You.
Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a play about deceit and honesty, because throughout the play, many characters use deceitful methods to uncover or hide truths about themselves or others to the point where the truth disappears in the lies.
In their essays both Buckley and Ericsson analyze the different ways we use lies to help and hurt our self in our every day lives, and how this effects American culture. Ericsson shows the way lies can , as she puts it, “ lubricate the daily machinery of living”(128). Buckley, on the other hand uses examples of lies as a way to deny himself; and do exactly the opposite of Ericsson. But they both show how we as Americans use lies these ways and others so much that most of us may not realize it.
10 Things I Hate About You takes William Shakespeare’s classic play, The Taming of the Shrew and manages to make it relevant to a modern audience. The story remains the same with the younger sister, Bianca, not allowed to have a relationship until her older sister, Kat, does. They did maintain several original scenes and even used several direct quotes from the original play. The writers have eliminated some of Bianca’s suitors and changed the way Kat is tamed to appeal to a modern audience. Shakespeare would have agreed with the casting of the movie. This movie may turn Shakespeare’s work into a teen comedy but it maintains many of the elements that made the play such a hit.
The passage below is found in the opening act of one of Shakespeare's most illusive plays of control and manipulation. The word "deception" is defined as "the act of misleading" or "to trick, cheat, lie, and mislead". From this definition, it is obvious that deception is normally perceived to be evil and results in the harm of others mentally and physically. It leads to broken hearts, untold truths, or even unpunished murder. However, in Shakespeare's The Tempest, deception is used as a virtuous art to manipulate an unjust situation and rectify it.
