Both Piercy and Clifton discuss gender stereotypes and the influences of male-controlled societies. Even though Piercy's girl was 'healthy' and 'intelligent' she was unaware of societies influences of a woman's perfection in a sexist society. On the other hand, Clifton was aware of stereotypes and influences but had ownership over her own body and used that to her advantage.
Jeanne and Elie have many similarities and differences. Not only did they both go through the same thing, but they also went through some very different experiences. Jeanna and Elie were around the same age and their emotions were somewhat different because of the different experiences.

Cisneros explains that before puberty girls are free spirited, careless, and not focused on their appearance. She describes this time, before girls realize they are viewed as objects, in a very positive manor to emphasize the negative impact that objectifying women has on a girls life. In Marge Piercy’s, “Barbie Doll,” we see the effect that society has on the expectations of women. A woman, like the girl described in ‘Barbie Doll’, should be perfect. She should know how to cook and clean, but most importantly be attractive according to the impossible stereotypes of womanly beauty. Many women in today’s society are compared to the unrealistic life and form of the doll. The doll, throughout many years, has transformed itself from a popular toy to a role model for actual women. The extremes to which women take this role model are implicated in this short, yet truthful poem.
The phrase, Beauty is only skin deep, does not appear to apply in this era of idealism and perfectionism. From the time babies are born through their adulthood, they are raised to conform to specific social roles. Specifically, little girls are expected to grow up becoming perfect feminine beauties created to bare children and care for their homes and husbands. Sandra Cisnero's “Barbie-Q” and Marge Piercy’s “Barbie Doll” portray the female body and gender roles through the standards imposed by the society that is one of the flawless physical beauty; just like the Barbie doll; the perfect figure, hair, nails, and face and ready to adhere to the expected roles of bearing children, taking care of husband and doing home chores. Throughout their work, in addition to criticize "the way in which women are socialized into stereotypical feminine behavior" (Overview: 'Barbie Doll'), both Cisnero and Piercy hold that escape is not possible from these ideals and that it is very destructive.
The poem, "Barbie Doll," written by Marge Piercy tells the story of a young girl growing up through the adolescence stage characterized by appearances and barbarity. The author uses imagery and fluctuating tone to describe the struggles the girl is experiencing during her teenage years, and the affects that can happen. The title of this poem is a good description of how most societies expect others, especially girls to look. Constantly, people are mocked for their appearance and expected to represent a "barbie-doll"-like figure. Few are "blessed" with this description. The female gender is positioned into the stereotype that women should be thin and beautiful. With this girl, the effects were detrimental. The first stanza describes the influence that a child is placed into during early childhood. Girls are expected to play with "dolls" and "stoves and irons," the usual toys that relate to the old-fashioned duties of women. Everyone from children, to the media, creates stereotypes. Stereotypes corrupt members of society, compelling them to view cultures and gender unfairly. Societies must eliminate the amount of stereotypes that are being distributed to various cultural around the world. Stereotypes are powerful, limiting, and discriminatory, and they prevent people from understanding other cultures fully. Without the demolition of stereotypical ideas, cultures that stereotype others will not see the differences between the stereotypical ideas and the real ideas of a culture.

The novel is set right after World War I, when females are trying to fight for their rights. Men during this time didn’t regard women very highly. “She was too feminine to be quite smart” (Lawrence 24). This quote explains how the society of that time is against women. They don’t seem to think fashionable women to be intellectual. Since Connie is always dressed up fashionably, she is considered unintellectual by Clifford and his upper class male friends. Clifford and his friends express “the arrogance that is so virulent a combination of egoism and fear of the world” (Bedient np). Male chauvinism is evident throughout the novel. The men are arrogant and egoistic with the women and make them feel inferior. The women were fearful of the world because of lack of self-confidence. Perhaps readers can see that men also struggle with gender stereotypes since “Men, more than women, are thought to be agentic —that is, masterful, assertive, competitive, and instrumentally competent” ( Eagly par.5). Likely men were thought the concept to be a real man, however, their expectations as men are rigid and narrow. Additionally, there was very little information in the novel about the men’s resistance of the gender roles, although just as a woman refuses the social expectations of a woman, a man can also refuse the social expectations of a man. As gender roles try to create an ideal image of a person, but in reality, it is ridiculous to uphold these stereotypes for gender roles for both genders. During the late 1800s, gender inequality was one of the common issues that existed in the society. Men and women were often distinguished among themselves. Men were regularly portrayed as the one who had power and strength, whereas women were supposed to do all the household work and they were seen as weak and trivial. Henrick Ibsen shows a prefect illustration of this example in the play A Doll’s House. Ibsen develops a notion of how the existence of gender roles in society affected one’s lives. The protagonist Nora, whose identity is shaped after seeing her husband’s actions, which depicts his beliefs of gender inequality, demonstrates this idea.
