The movie of Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief is a movie directed by Chris Columbus and was released on February 12th 2010. The movie of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, also directed by Chris Columbus, was released on November 14th 2002. These two movies are in fact more similar than most people would think. These movies are similar because they have similar plots, character choices, and similar settings.
To begin with, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has a similar plot line to Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. In Percy Jackson, Percy is accompanied by a female and a male character, Annabeth and Grover. Grover is Percy’s long-time best friend while Annabeth becomes Percy’s friend along the way. This is similar to the character choice in Harry Potter; Harry is also accompanied by a female and a male character, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Like Percy Jackson, Ron is Harry’s long-time best friend while Hermione comes along as time carries on. In the cases of the movies the female character seems to be added in as the story goes. Then both movies indicate that the main character has lost their closest family members or are very distant to them. In Percy Jackson, Percy has never met his father and he was told his father was dead. In Harry Potter, it was known that his parents were dead. Both characters did not have the chance to truly bond with one parent or the other. Percy never got to bond with his father, while Harry never got to bond with either of his parents. Both characters had one main antagonist that follows him throughout the story. In Percy Jackson it, Luke, son of Hermes, is one of the main antagonists. In Harry Potter, it was Draco Malfoy. Finally both characters had to endure an obnoxious character to live with. Percy had to endure his step-father, who was a lazy, overweight, and a slob; while Harry had to endure his aunt and uncle who were both obnoxious, lazy, and very annoying, not to forget …show more content…

In both movies the soon to become heroes, live in unbearably poor living circumstances. In Harry Potter, he is forced to sleep in a secluded room hidden from the everyday life. While in Percy Jackson, he lived in a small apartment that barely was able to fit his whole family. Then as the movie plot goes on, the main characters both shift their settings to a new, magical place. Harry Potter moves to Hogwarts and lives in the pleasant condition of the Gryffindor team dorm. Percy Jackson moves to camp half-blood where he lives in the beautiful sleeping area that his father had set up for him. In both setting the places have magical qualities and values. In each of the movies, they all have this place where they can call safe. A place where both Harry and Percy can receive no harm, in Harry potter that place was Hogwarts. Hogwarts protected him from he-who-must-not-be-named, or in other words Voldemort. Then in Percy Jackson that safe place was called camp half-blood, which was the place where no magical thing on Earth could harm the demigods, including Percy. In both showings, the story seemed to include some sort of violent sport. In Harry Potter, that violent sport was quidditch, which was a game that was almost similar to basketball.
