The character Louisa from the book, “Tomorrow Girls Behind the Gates” and an important spokesperson Martin Luther King Jr., most famous for his “I Have a Dream” have many similarities and differences. They both live in a difficult time period and attempt to change the way things are. Louisa and MLK are faced with different obstacles and although they both go through a hard time period, they have different ways of changing it. Louisa is sent to a boarding school, Country Manor School to escape the dangerous world, but soon wants to leave. Martin Luther King Jr.’s goal was for everyone to be equality and for the future world to never live through what he went through. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted equality for everyone, as he lived in a world where you were frowned upon is you were African American or a Caucasian associating with one. He did not believe that because you are different did not mean you should be treated differently. He wrote many speeches to try and convince others that everyone should be treated equally. In the speech he says, “We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating ‘for whites only.’ We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” This statement displays that the African Americans are not happy with the treatment they are given and they will be until they’re children no longer have to see signs plastered everywhere saying “for whites only”, when they can vote, and they believe they can vote for someone who will not mislead them or their country. and Louisa have many in common, they also have differences. For example, MLK and Louisa are both faced with struggles, but they persevere in different ways. MLK faced his problems by staying determined to change the United States point of view on treating other differently because they are different. In the text it states, “I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.” This shows how he was sure that this speech was going to make history, he was determined to continue fighting until the African Americans got the rights they deserved. Unlike, Martin Luther king Jr., Louisa immediately wanted to escape the boarding school when she found out many secrets about the school, County Manor School. Instead of exposing all the secrets she knew about County Manor School and confronting the administration, she wanted to leave. In the text it says, “Mrs. Brewster is an alliance agent…when everything goes down, I’m making sure I can find my way home.” This quote shows that when Louisa finds out that one of the staff members is an alliance agent she has a plan and is ready to take off.
