The fables “El Grillo y el Jaguar” and “The Hero in the Village” both contain similar messages of cleverness and justice. The former is a Mexican fable about an unkind jaguar who challenges a singing cricket to a race. On the other hand, the latter Bolivian fable is about a hard-working burro who is blamed for eating his master’s garden every night, but the true culprit is a group of sly foxes. Both the cricket and the burro cleverly defeat their antagonists, however. While each encloses differences, also, these fables have many resemblances in characters and themes. In the fables, the protagonists must face against their enemies. “El Grillo y el Jaguar” has the cricket opposing the jaguar, while the donkey is against the foxes in “The Hero
in the Village.” During the Mexican fable, the jaguar is the king of the world, and the cricket offends the jaguar with his singing and when he does not greet him. The “king” sees the cricket as lower and challenges him to a race. If the jaguar wins, the cricket can no longer sing; but if the cricket wins, the jaguar must accept his apology and he can continue singing. The grillo tricks the jaguar and wins the race by riding on top of his head and jumping off before the jaguar noticed. In the Bolivian fable, the burro is abused by his owner for destroying the garden. However, a group of foxes are actually eating and ruining the crops. They see the burro as below them, much like how the jaguar lacks respect for the cricket. On the other hand, the donkey is as clever as the cricket. He pretends to be dead, and when the foxes drag him to their home with a rope, he attacks them with the rope. When he arrives home, the burro’s owner beats the cruel foxes for the ruined garden. The burro is then praised for his cunning plan. Because of their lack of respect and sense of superiority, the foxes and the jaguar are similar; while the cricket and burro share a clever nature. Although they are alike, the two fables do have differences. The foxes manipulate and cause the burro’s abuse, while the jaguar does no physical or psychological harm to the cricket. While the cricket lives simply and contently, the burro undergoes difficult work every day with little to no reward. The setting is also very different in both stories. In “El Grillo y el Jaguar,” animals solely occupy the world, but in the other fable, humans exist and control some animals. The theme of each also differs slightly, as the burro is more motivated by revenge against the foxes, while the cricket just wants to continue singing. With these differences, each fable can stand as its own lesson and moral. When reading fables, the lessons are noticeable. The reason behind this is because of the opposing characters. There must be a “good” character versus a “bad” character. Without them, the fable loses meaning. In ““The Hero in the Village,” the burro would never have stood up for himself without the foxes as the villains. The jaguar would also still believe that every creature feared him if the cricket had never won the race. If these fables lacked contrasting forces, the teachings inside them would be gone forever.
Palmas, at this time, took the task of retelling a traditional religious tale with his own twist, and that twist allowed him to entertain as well as criticize his own material. Throughout time, stories have been passed down from generation to generation in order to make sense of our world and to share that understanding with others. “Los tres hermanos (The Three Brothers)” and “El indito de las cien vacas (The Indian and the Hundred Cows)” are two Tales of the Hispanic Southwest that I feel the reader could truly relate to in terms of the important moral lessons that were meant to be taught, inferred and understood. The lesson in “Los tres hermanos (The Three Brothers)” involves understanding that the characters involved failed to reflect on the needs of the thirsty, hungry and poor, the lonely, as well as the elderly and are ultimately fairly served by means of moral ruin, death, and worst of all, eternal damnation, while “El indito de las cien vacas (The Indian and the Hundred Cows)” in due course, involves the notion that God helps those who help themselves.
Since the beginning of time, fairy tales, stories and legends have shared a common theme where good and evil are played against each other. In the story of “Beowulf”, translated by, “Burton Raffel”, there is a hero who plays as a good character, and there is also a demon who rules the dark side. The hero Beowulf, agrees to take a journey to conquer the evil monster Grendel. But when Beowulf is trying to defeat the beast, Grendel fights back, causing integrity and generosity to vanish. The common theme in various tales like in Beowulf is, good vs. evil.
The battle of stories in this chapter exists in how the men take advantage of the emerging opportunities and change that comes with new independence. Tholo obtains a tractor and is able to go to a sort of trade school for it. This allows him to work for and help out others in his village ward which, as a generous man, he does. This wealth of opportunity also allows him to take on his wife Thato, though she already has a child and has nothing to offer him in terms of money or possessions. The additional leisure time and comparative ease of life in this type of society was not always handled so well. Thato tells Tholo of a woman named Felicia and her husband. Felicia refuses to plough because her husband has a good job. It seems they could technically get by without her ploughing. As a result though, he quits his job on the basis that if she was not working he would not either. By all accounts, this type of conflict was unheard of in the pre-colonial society. This may reflect a change of simply modern times (and capitalism) in which people move from working to survive to working for amenities and profit. Colonialism and capitalism offer a new framework for the role of work and leisure, and “Hunting” shows the conflict that arises from trying to fit into this new narrative of how life
The setting in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” has many similarities and differences to the setting in “The Interlopers”. Though the settings differ in many ways, for example the danger of them and their contents, they are also similar in their mystery and vitality to the plot. These two pieces of writing hold many of the same ideas, but they also are original works that portray them in their own way.
Some of the greatest villains in literature are characters who have merely been misunderstood. While we are drawn to literary heroes and admire their strengths, we often forget to consider the point of view of their enemies. Many of these enemies also possess strengths that the reader does not realize. Along with traditional heroes, the villain in a story can be considered an anti-hero. In the story Grendel, by John Gardner, the reader is challenged to contemplate the thoughts and feelings of the anti-hero, Grendel. Exploring heroes like Beowulf, and anti-heroes like Grendel, and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, causes the reader to develop a better understanding of the relationship that exists between the characters and their society.
Hemingway presents takes the several literary styles to present this short story. Hemingway’s use of Foreshadowing, Pathos, Imagery and Personification allows the reader to enter the true context of the frustration and struggle that the couples face. Although written in the 1920’s it the presents a modern day conflict of communication that millions of couples face. At first glance the beautiful landscape of the Barcelonian hillside in which Jig refers to frequently throughout the text appears to have taken the form of White Elephants. The Americans’ response to Jigs’ observation was less than enthusiastic as he provides a brief comment and continues on with his cerveza. This was but the first of the many verbal jousts to come between Jig and the American. The metaphorical inferences in those verbal confrontations slowly uncover the couple’s dilemma and why they may be on the waiting for the train to Madrid.
Edgar Allen Poe’s tale of murder and revenge, “The Cask of Amontillado”, offers a unique perspective into the mind of a deranged murderer. The effectiveness of the story is largely due to its first person point of view, which allows the reader a deeper involvement into the thoughts and motivations of the protagonist, Montresor. The first person narration results in an unbalanced viewpoint on the central conflict of the story, man versus man, because the reader knows very little about the thoughts of the antagonist, Fortunato. The setting of “The Cask of Amontillado”, in the dark catacombs of Montresor’s wine cellar, contributes to the story’s theme that some people will go to great lengths to fanatically defend their honor.

During the era of maritime exploration and the discovery of the Americas, assumptions were made of the land likening it to not only a paradise, but one that was overrun with cannibalistic natives. These suppositions led to a desire to explore the lands and conquer the savages that posed a threat to man and civilization itself. The consequences of this mass colonization and dehumanization of the natives paved the way for literary pieces that pose as critiques of the era when viewed through a post-colonial lens. When looked at through a post-colonial perspective, a few common themes prevail amongst compared texts. Focusing on the theme of the journey, what it means, and what is at stake, Garcilaso de la Vega’s “The Story of Pedro Serrano” and Juan José Saer’s The Witness both touch on all these themes with great severity, dissecting the purpose of the journey and what it means to be a civilized man.

Miguel de Cervantes' greatest literary work, Don Quixote, maintains an enduring, if somewhat stereotypical image in the popular culture: the tale of the obsessed knight and his clownish squire who embark on a faith-driven, adventure-seeking quest. However, although this simple premise has survived since the novel's inception, and spawned such universally known concepts or images as quixotic idealism and charging headlong at a group of "giants" which are actually windmills, Cervantes' motivation for writing Don Quixote remains an untold story. Looking at late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Spain from the viewpoint of a Renaissance man, Cervantes came to dislike many aspects of the age in which he lived, and decided to satirize what he saw as its failings; however, throughout the writing of what would become his most famous work, Cervantes was torn by a philosophical conflict which pervaded the Renaissance and its intellectuals--the clash of faith and reason.
Don Quixote is one of the oldest forms of the modern novel. Written in the early 17th century it follows the adventures of Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza. In Don Quixote, Cervantes satirizes the idea of a hero. Don Quixote sees himself as a noble knight among the ignorant common folk, but everyone else sees him as a bumbling idiot who has gone mad. Therefore, the novel’s longevity in the western canon is due to the humorous power struggle and the quest of a hero Don Quixote faces throughout the story.
Aesop’s fables were written around 300 BCE, and originated from Greece (“Aesop par. 6). Although most of the fables are about animals, they display the characteristics of humans. Fables are usually short and easy to comprehend, and all fables have their own morals, however; some fables have more than one. Aesop’s fables may seem childish and pointless, but they were written to point out the flaws and strengths of human beings. Most fables have a central problem that the main character must solve, and have been very important to society as a whole.
Each of the stories, “The Poem of the Cid”, “Ali Cogia”, and “Ying-Ying’s Story”, all have a similar foundation that helps define the story. This idea of sacrifice for prestige is prevalent in each of the stories.
