Through the meaning behind these poems are different. They each share a similar point of view which is that they are talking to young men about war. For example in The Call Pope expressed the glory that young men would get by going to war in stanza three, Who'll earn the Empire's thanks / Will you my laddie? (17-18) Jessie Pope beliefs on war is that by young men going to fight for their country they will be treated as heroes. If they chose not to join they would be considered disrespecting their country. Furthermore, Wilfred Owen does the same thing in Dulce et Decorum Est though his views on war are inverted as opposed to what Jessie Pope believes. He personally feels the war is not the best thing that young men should to do for gratitude
The Pope has agreed to help defend the Byzantine Empire! After being appealed to by Emperor Alexius I Comnenus, in 1095, Pope Urban II assembled the Council of Clermont. In order to help the Byzantine Empire and ensure his power over the church he has decided to call for a military expedition to get back the Holy Land.
The two film posters I will be discussing in this essay are Julius Caesar (1953) and Hail, Caesar! (2016).
Because of that, they switch between imagination and reality. The two poems emphasize the boys’ childhoods through their interest in playing war, and show their immaturity in trying to be proud and aggressive. However, their naivety is holding them back from developing their senses of awareness and consciousness to become a grown-up man. However, with war imagination, boys are creating their boundaries rather than moving on.
It is amazing how much political and military supremacy the papacy position gained when the Crusades began. The First Crusade (1096-1099) was a military expedition initiated by Pope Urban the II to regain the Holy Lands in Jerusalem from the Muslim conquest. The Pope gave a speech requesting military action against Muslim takeover to the French people of Clermont. The speech eventually propagated to other nations for further recruitment. Urban’s political and military involvement helped regain the Holy Lands and save the Christian Crusaders souls. His famous speech changed the course of history in part because its dissemination was overly successful, and assembled over 40,000 Crusaders to do the will of God. Why was Pope Urban II so victorious in recruiting people for the First Crusade, and why was his influence so important?
Wilfred Owen expresses his feelings about war in “Anthem for a Doomed Youth”, which revolves around the events that took place in World War I. Throughout the sonnet, the speaker talks bitterly about modern warfare, noting the harsh sounds of war and questioning the treatment of the soldiers that perish. In the octave, the speaker wonders what can be done to honor the soldiers that died, but realizes negatively that the soldiers only receive death instead of ceremonies. In the sestet, the speaker expands upon this idea of a proper ceremony for the deceased soldiers, saying that the families must be the ones to properly honor their dead. Owen’s use of the Petrarchan sonnet with a Shakespearean rhyme scheme, helps him express his frustration about war and its subsequent treatment of the dead.
The poet Wilfred Owen was one of many poets who were against war. He reflected this idea of anti-war in his poems, one of his poems called “Anthem for Doomed Youth”, mirrors most aspects of war all put together in this short still deep poem. An example of that would be when the speaker stated,” What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?”(1) The speaker asks is there any sound that marks our soldier’s death other than the sounds of church bell’s which are mostly rung to represent somebody’s absence? Clearly, the speaker sets anger as the tone of the poem through this question to show that soldier’s death is unremarkable.. The speaker compares the soldiers to a “cattle” which illustrates that soldiers are treated more like animals with no feelings and also shows how they are killed indiscriminately in war. Finally the line ironically contains an iambic pentameter which is a natural rhythm for such dark, grim, dull subject. The two novels, The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, and All Quiet on The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, both present a similar idea of how soldiers are killed out there in the front comprehensively and the dehumanization of war towards its soldiers. The first novel is set during the Civil War, and it focuses on the psychological aspects of one soldier named Henry Fleming and how his naive thoughts about war constantly change through the course of the novel. The second novel presents the life of a soldier named Paul Baumer and his friends who were faced with the terribleness of war and how severely it affected their lives. Both Stephen Crane's "Do Not Weep, Maiden, For War Is Kind" and Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est" use vivid images, diction rich with connotation, similes, and metaphors to portray the irony between the idealized glory of war and the lurid reality of war. However, by looking at the different ways these elements are used in each poem, it is clear that the speakers in the two poems are soldiers who come from opposite ends of the spectrum of military ranks. One speaker is an officer and the other is a foot soldier. Each of the speakers/soldiers is dealing with the repercussions from his own realities of the horror of war based on his duty during the battle.
On the first read-through of Wilfred Owen’s Dulce et Decorum Est it seems to just be a poem describing a soldiers experience in World War I, but there is much more to the story than that. Through the use of several literary techniques, Owen is able to vividly describe the speaker’s experiences and at the same time make them relatable to the people reading the poem. He also is able to criticize the people who he thinks are at least partly responsible for “tricking” a younger, more gullible him into the situation in the first place.
The simple definition of war is a state of armed competition, conflict, or hostility between different nations or groups; however war differs drastically in the eyes of naive children or experienced soldiers. Whether one is a young boy or a soldier, war is never as easy to understand as the definition. comprehend. There will inevitably be an event or circumstance where one is befuddled by the horror of war. For a young boy, it may occur when war first breaks out in his country, such as in “Song of Becoming.” Yet, in “Dulce et Decorum Est” it took a man dying in front of a soldier's face for the soldier to realize how awful war truly is. Both “Song of Becoming” and “Dulce et Decorum Est” are poems about people experiencing the monstrosity of war for the first time. One is told from the perspective of young boys who were stripped of their joyful innocence and forced to experience war first hand. The other is from the perspective of a soldier, reflecting on the death of one of his fellow soldiers and realizing that there is nothing he can do to save him. While “Song of Becoming” and “Dulce et Decorum Est” both focus on the theme of the loss of innocence, “Song of Becoming” illustrates how war affects the lives of young boys, whereas “Dulce et Decorum Est” depicts the affect on an experienced soldier.
In both the poems he shows and discusses death in warfare and its effects, which are far reaching. In “Dulce et Decorum est” the point of death is shown in a real light, Owens uses strong imagery to connect us to these soldiers and their plight for survival in World War I. I think the line that shows the reader this aspect is, “He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning” (16). Owens paints the graphic scene of a dying soldier during a gas raid. Owens deliberately makes the scene graphic in order to gain the reader’s attention, and keep them reading. In “Anthem for Doomed Youth,” Owens never brings up the word war or the name of any country in particular; he does this so that every war can be applicable to the poem. Owens also does this so that the topic that all wars are horrible comes into play. He personally takes the stance, that we as humans have not done anything to change the fate of the dying soldiers and he expounds upon it. “No mockeries now for them, no prayers nor bells; / Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs, – / The shrill demented choirs of wailing shells.” (5-7) In this line Owens talks about how these boys/men have no proper ceremony for their death. The theme for both is that war changes people through lots of pain and suffering. “His teeth chattered, he began to gibber to himself, cursing war, cursing himself, cursing everybody.” The sniper, at first, had felt joyous when he shot his enemy, but once the deed was done, he had felt a strong feeling of remorse which had caused pain and suffering. “He thought he’d enlist perhaps / Offhand like just as I / Was out of work, had sold his traps / No other reason why” (Hardy 13-16). The man could have befriended each and every one of the others, but war turns people against each other and causes great pain and suffering. There are also differences. The sniper joined because a civil war was going on in Dublin, Ireland. The soldier in “The Man He Killed” joined because he had nothing left. “Here and there through the city, machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms. Republicans and Free Staters were waging a civil war.” Throughout Dublin, it was brother against brother, literally, fighting in a civil war that tore families apart. The next theme is that war can tear friends apart also. “Yes, quaint and curious war is! / You shoot a fellow down / You’d treat if met where any bar is / Or help to half-a-crown” (Hardy 17-20). Putting the two poems up against one another does, then, prove quite interesting. They are similar in the way that they both put shame to the history of man, and that they deal with war in the grandest sense of the word, but at the same time they completely differ in regards to what type of war is portrayed, due to the contextual situation surrounding the authors during their respective time periods. Ultimately, we have two poems which can be compared on the grounds of their subject, but are poles apart regarding their message. The structure of these poems is not what would be typically expected from a war poem, but are structured on the basis of these typical structures in order to create some sense of familiarity. Brooke’s poem expands on this familiarity while Owen attempts to deliberately sabotage it. In regards to content, Brooke shows throughout his perception of the nobility of dying for one’s country, whilst Owen uses all of his poetic techniques to show the opposite.
In several of his poems, Wilfred Owen tells of vicious memories returning to him in dreams, convicting and horrifying. Dulce et Decorum Est is certainly one of those, perhaps even the most powerful of all of them. His use of imagery paints an ugly picture of death, mutilation, and suffering in the service of country, conjuring feelings of revulsion and desolation. These feelings are further accentuated by use of poetic structure, bracing an already strong presence. But Dulce et Decorum Est isn’t simply a tale of horror. Owen is personally condemning the exaltation of the death suffered on the battlefield, even in service of one's homeland.
