How far would a typical person go just to keep their reputation clean? Two specific characters in the play The Crucible by, Arthur Miller, were involved with actions that would be considered terrible sins just to keep their name and reputation safe. Some ways which they were similar, and some ways which were different.
One similarity that Abigail Williams and John Proctor had was having illegal sexual relations while Abby worked for Proctor. After the affair, they lied and acted as if nothing had happened. Both characters also know about what took place in the woods with all the girls and Tituba. Both characters are also similar because they try to hide details about their affair, know about the spell casting in the woods and lie about everything
they know will get them in trouble. Although they have many similarities, they also have many differences. One difference is that Abby is seventeen years old and madly in love with Proctor. Proctor is in his thirties and despises Abby. Abby hates Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, whom he still loves. Because Abby hates Elizabeth so much, Abby stabs herself and blames it on “Elizabeth’s spirit” so Elizabeth could be accused of witchcraft. Proctor stands up for Elizabeth after this. There are numerous of reasons why Abigail Williams and John Proctor are the same and ways they are different. Both characters did a lot to keep theirs and other reputations safe. They each took risks that they knew could damage their names, and would lead to serious consequences if they were exposed.
Although both men had sinful relationships, these relationships were also very different. John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams. But, he did not love her.
In the story The crucible there were many people and altercations that lead up to John Proctor’s death. He got into many altercations with people, especially Abigail Williams, which ended up leading up to her killing a bunch of people including John Proctor. There were many things the filmed showed that lead up to John Proctor’s death. The first thing was when Mary Warren accused him of having something to do with witchery. Then it was when Goody proctor didn’t tell the truth about her husband and Abigail Williams having an affair. This last person was that was the whole problem in this and was the main cause of john’s death was Abigail Williams, she started everything in this whole Mass hysteria.
¨I have known her, sir. I have known her.¨ A crucible is a test or severe trial, and no trial is more severe than that of a man’s soul. The entire story of Salem is ridden with tests of character and the humanity of the citizens as they respond to the mass hysteria created by someone crying witch. Every single character in this play is given a trial through which they must come to achieve their greater purpose, and these trials expose the skeletons in their closets and the blackness of their sins. However, the similar message is presented in different ways by the cinematic portrayal and Miller’s original play. John Proctor is a hardworking person, but he is a sinner too, he had an affair, he does not go to church because he hates Reverend Parris. John and I have a few personality traits in common, in that we are both hardworking men, we sinned a few times, but at the end we are honest.
Abigail Williams is motivated to lie about her affair with John Proctor. What motivates her to lie is the thought of getting hung. Another big reason that she could be lying is for vengeance. Abigail loves John Proctor and one night they had an affair and touched. Since then, Abigail has been jealous towards John’s wife, Elizabeth. Abigail goes into the forest with some other young girls and Tituba, who makes a potion to have boys fall in love with them. In the Crucible there was three characters that stood out from all the other ones in this wicked story. Abigail Williams was a big influence in this story she would lie and lie to get out of things and she was also the leader of the girls in the woods. Furthermore she also had an affair with John Proctor which made John and Elizabeth relationship unstable. Also John Proctor runs into a situation at the end of the story where he is put in the position if he wants his pride of not signing that paper full of lies or die knowing he did the right thing of not lying. Additionally, Elizabeth Proctor has never lied ever until the day John was being prosecuted for his witchcraft and possibly adultery and Elizabeth lied so that his name wouldn't be ruined.
Some of the ways they are similar include: Abigail is hiding what actually happened between John and her so she came up with a lie and accused many people of witchcraft. Mary wants her named drop so she is telling what has happened but is being accused of lying. Elizabeth wants her husband back but her reputation is on the line if she goes back to John then they will think she will accept a cheater but if she doesn’t go back she is affecting her life so she has many decisions to make about her reputation alone. They are all different for several reason: for the first Abigail comes up with all this and throws others under the bus to deal with her mistakes she doesn’t own up to what she had truly done. Mary tells what she knows happened and she was there so she is telling facts which have made Abigail and her suspicious because there stories are not the same in any ways. The character who has the most striking struggle with his reputation would be John Proctor. In numerous ways throughout the play, John does almost anything he can to protect his reputation from being tarnished. He makes it very clear that he prioritizes his reputation. The first way he displays this is through his secrecy of committing adultery with Abigail Williams. Even though his wife, Elizabeth, knew about the situation between Abigail and him, he didn’t want anyone else to find out.

Reputation seemed to be a major focus of almost all they characters in this literary work. Whether it be reputation as a good member of the Salem Massachusetts community, or reputation as most successful preacher, the townspeople seemed to revolve around reputation. Many townspeople including John Proctor, Reverend Parris, as well as Giles Corey.
