During the twenty minutes of silent sitting, I observed several different scenes in a coffee shop. It’s interesting to look back on your own feeling and experiences in contrast to one’s seen before you. The first scene observed took place between a father and daughter. They just came back from swimming, as was obvious from their apparel, so they came into the coffee shop for a bite of ice cream. The father, engaging in conversation with his daughter, asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, for which she answered, “A dancer!” The girl, grinning from ear-to-ear, didn’t expect her father to reply “Life is hard. You’ll learn how unrealistic that is later.” The smile quickly faded from her face as she went on enjoying her ice cream. This …show more content…
I think this is the way I learn best is through relation. However, I also learn that I connect really well with other’s feelings. I felt the little girl’s sadness when she was given too much realism. I shared in the excitement of a man starting a new job, especially one at a coffee shop. However, I also learned more about the teacher I would like to be. No matter what, I will always strive to save or help every child, even if it doesn’t matter in the end. I hope that aspect of me never changes. I care about people, especially when I have no just cause. I find these strengths within myself after only minimal observance. Imagine what further observations could depict. An article which spoke to my soul and summarized a mixture of feelings I had was “Courage” by Shirley A. Riddle Bendau. Throughout her narration, she depicts the discouragement and tiredness she feels over teaching. However, she realizes that she teaches for a reason, and that reason is because of “that moment when a student believes in himself…for the chance to speak honestly and listen openly while others do the same. I teach to become vulnerable, to be questioned and to question, to feel the sense of danger that comes with molding futures” (p. 96). The process of memorization starts at birth with the development of cells and extends throughout the lifetime through the effects of life experiences and stimulants. Like the rest of the body, the brain is made up of cells. These brain cells are different, more specialized cells. (Sprenger 1). Two major brain cells are the neurons- the nerve cells- and the glial cells which work as the ‘glue’ of the neurons. At birth, the brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. Although that number remains constant over time, these cells can lose their function if not exercised properly in a process called “neutral pruning”. Learning is defined as “two neurons communicating with each other”. A neuron has learned when it has made a connection with another neuron (Sprenger 2).
Subjects from group B and C on the other hand only managed to score a 5-8 score in the test as, there were many commissions as well as omissions.
Gently swaying back and forth in an old wooden rocker, I take a break from my journaling. While listening to the creaky hum of the tired oak thumping out a blue song, I think about the art of writing, painting with my words, and wonder what hampers my creative practice. A foreboding sense of unworthiness floats into my consciousness and I ask myself why do I feel this way. Rifling through my thoughts a fog wraps around me like a blanket not for comfort but instead to shield the feelings of inadequacy. I take a deep breath and inhale the reassuring sage scent of our family room. I press on in this process of self-discovery; an old black and white photo sitting on a shelf captures my eye. I see an image of myself as a smiling, confident child, which stirs uneasiness within. Following the muddled whisperings in my mind, I return to the day in the snapshot and consider what comes to pass.
Sex is an important yet seemingly impolite subject in today’s society, and despite its implicit awkwardness, sex—and all of its taboos—needs to be discussed. The fact that we are so squeamish about discussing sex is ironic, since sex is a commonplace occurrence that nearly everyone, worldwide, will experience during their lifetime. Our society’s silence about sex creates a number of discrepancies in what is deemed societally and morally appropriate. One of the most important issues regarding sex is what makes it ethically permissible. Is consent enough or is there something more needed? Some philosophers argue that consent is substantial for considering if sex is moral; others disagree and claim that consent is the tip of the iceberg considering the morality of sex. The event that I attended for the interpreter observation requirement was an event that occurred in the classroom and took place in order to provide interpretation for a guest speaker, Richard McGann, who was Deaf and blind. The event was held at the University of Pittsburgh during the Intro to Interpreting American Sign Language-English class taught by Jessica Adams on Tuesday, November 10th at 5:30PM and the interpreted lecture took place in a typical classroom located on the third floor of the Cathedral of Learning. As a professional in today’s society, it is greatly important to be able to communicate effectively with other professionals, with clients, and with those that are encountered in daily living. In order to communicate in a proper manner, not only is talking and non-verbal communication, but a large aspect is the ability to listen. Listening is a vital task in order to build a relationship and find meaning in someone else’s words. In order to find this meaning one must follow the characteristics of active listening, face the challenges to listening, and reflect upon one’s own listening skills.

In my life, my favorite teachers were always the ones who taught lessons inside and outside the classroom. They taught us about our past, our language and the world around us for tests and quizzes while also teaching us how to navigate through life with their lessons that weren’t needed for our grades. For me, I wanted to be that kind of person. I knew I wanted to help others when they needed help, and I knew I wanted to do that as a teacher.
Being a student for the majority of my life, I had never fully understood why anyone would desire to be a teacher. But after four semesters at College, I am slowly changing my attitude. As an education major, I now attend real classrooms and observe the wonders of how a young child’s mind works. Through my observations in actual class settings, I have also come to realize how delicate a child’s mind is and that the slightest external influence can build or destroy that child. I too want to experience the joy and wonder of seeing a young ingenuous mind finally understanding a new concept. I want to see the student blossom and grow as a result of change and experience, not only in a classroom setting, but also through social interactions with his or her peers.
Open learning environment refers to the shared spaces and all the activities therein and the materials provided to children within the early years education context to further enhance their learning opportunities, and provide them with a rich experience in their foundation years.
Learning is commonly defined as the process of acquiring new, or modifying existing, knowledge through experiences. To me, learning is an ongoing process that continues throughout our lives. When referring to Robert E. Slavin ‘s book, Educational Psychology: Theory and Practice, he mentioned how people are already engaged in a learning environment where they receive stimuli everywhere they go, but they are only aware of some of the stimuli (p.129). By referring to Slavin’s book, what real learning is to me is when an individual actually notice those stimuli, learned particular information and skills from those stimuli, and being able to apply the things they learn to their daily life. Furthermore, when referring to the Operant Conditioning theory by B.F. Skinner, which is mentioned in Slavin’s book, real learning is also when an individual had a change in knowledge and behavior that is caused by experience or consequences, no matter if it is a positive or negative consequence.
I believe that Face to Face learning is better than online learning because students have access to various learning resources on campus verses off. Face to face allows students to have instant gratification with answers and help. When a student is in class they can ask questions while it is fresh on their mind or help with a particular problem. If the student was at home online they would have to wait for the instructor to email them back. Is that really more conducive to a person’s education and learning?
