The title of this essay “Silence and the Notion of the Commons” gives the same idea of people as programmable and unprogrammable similar to the idea seen in the Matrix. Whereas programmable people, who are the commons, are the people inside the matrix they are also known as the sheep, the people that believe in everything they are told. The unprogrammable people, who are the silence, are the people outside of the matrix. Ursula Franklin uses a variety of techniques in order for the audience to fully understand her message, and to inform them of the topics discussed in her essay, as is particularly apparent in paragraph 5 of her essay “Silence and the Notion of the Commons.” Franklin addresses her audience in first person in paragraph 3, “I would like to thank everyone involved in this conference, and the organizers in particular, for inviting me to deliver this talk. I am very obviously an outsider and wish to come to this group to talk about something that is central to all work that you people are doing.” Franklin addresses her audience personally. She speaks to them about something not necessarily of her interest but of the audience’s interest. Her audience is perhaps mature but may have some people that English may not be a language the understand, therefore by emphasizing very drastically on the important words in her essay by saying them frequently. It is a psychological tact that the more times you repeat a word the better the chance there is of the audience remembering it. In paragraph 4, Franklin uses repetition to emphasize sound and its sources. She uses “s” sounds throughout the whole passage to imbed the sounds into her audiences mind. The use of alliteration can first be seen in the title “Silence and the Notion of the Commons”, the sound that standout are the “S” sounds of Silence and in Commons. This idea is used in paragraph 4 by the repetition of sound and source that is then incorporated into soundscape and landscape. She also uses the phrase “mix sounds” which is ironic to the fact that she only uses the alliteration of the “s” sound in mix and in sounds. The use of alliteration also allows the audience to pay close attention to the important words. Another technique Franklin uses to maintain the audience’s attention is her sentence structure. She uses very long sentences throughout paragraph 4 and has 2 short sentences in the middle of the paragraph.
A decade prior to the Emancipation Proclamation, newly freed slave Fredrick Douglass was attempting to save a dying abolitionist movement. A gifted orator, Douglass used these 3 literary techniques to convey his point: A series of rhetorical questions designed to highlight the irony of slavery in a country of liberty, anaphora skillfully used to nail the slaves’ misfortune onto the country’s ideals of democracy and allusions in order to connect both slaves and slavers to their shared Christian values.

Franklin’s accomplishments arose from the influence of family, friends, education, and personal experience with being African American. He had a difficult task as an historian as he was writing about the neglected history of his minority group while being an advocate for the rights of this group. This could be perceived as a conflict of interest, but he thought of it as being beneficial. His method of writing was not to promote African Americans, but to interpret their involvement in the framework of American history. This was not something that had been done extensively and thoroughly before. Franklin set the stage and helped to create a widely accepted field of history.
The tone of the essay is pretty straightforward. Benjamin Franklin means what he writes and thinks. There is no pun or sarcasm in this piece. He does however seem to put an apostrophe where the "e" of the past participle goes. This is something that they did during his lifetime. It is something that the audience can recognize right away because it catches your eye right off the back. An example of this is "...that I conciev'd the bold and..." Benjamin Franklin lists his virtues in a numerical order of their importance. A person could also think by looking at Benjamin Franklin's essay that it could be more of a science lab report. The way it is written could look easily like that because it has a list and a table and steps on how to be perfect.
In Paragraph 6 of Learning to Read and Write, Frederick Douglass described the positive and negative effects of having knowledge as a present day slave. Douglass uses a lot of repetition while saying, "I saw nothing without seeing it, i heard nothing without hearing it, and felt nothing without feeling it." Repeating nothing shows how Douglass having the knowledge of how freedom looks and feels like, he can't forget or escape idea of being free. It some what haunt him. Also, it's an example of parallel clauses. "The silver trump of freedom and roused my soul to eternal wakefulness," quickly you can tell that Douglass uses a metaphor comparing the silver trump of freedom to a hope of freedom that does consume him. As Madeleine L’Engle aptly said, “because to take away a man's freedom of choice, even his freedom to make the wrong choice, is to manipulate him as though he were a puppet and not a person,” taking away freedom of choice is equivalent to stripping off humanity. Mankind has evolved to have the ability to use the mind for reason and understanding, which separates humans from beasts and machines. It is this ability that allows man to analyze and formulate different choices, and have the freedom over them. Despite the knowledge that freedom of choice is fundamental in making humans human, social control has always been one of the leading reasons to justify the removal of that freedom. Through showing the need for the loss of freedom for social stability and the resulting problems, both The Unincorporated Man and A Clockwork Orange highlight the conflict between control and freedom.
Throughout history, there have been many types of oppression. Oppression occurs when someone is viewed as a lesser human in a way that makes the suppressor feel superior (Oppression, slide 5 and 6). Always, the person who is doing the suppressing is viewed as the terrible human being. However, humans are equally guilty when they sit back and do not do anything. Doing nothing is a way of encouraging the oppression that is occurring. The only way to change the cycle of oppression is speaking up and out against what is wrong. Thus, binary ideology can only be challenged when the individual silence is broken; the effect will be the increased visibility of others.

The world of the matrix, what Neo believed to be the 'real' world is presented in sharp contrasts between light and dark. In our world today humans are faced with the same identity and reality struggles. These struggles may not be as exaggerated and far-fetched as Neo's, but in essence they are just as difficult. When I look at my peers or even within myself, I see the struggle that comes when making choices; will the choices lead to the right path or to the wrong? By making these choices, will it ultimately change an individual’s identity? I believe that the choices we make define who we are and what will become of us. Some of us keep one life a secret, and one life visible for others to see, just as Neo did.
This thought suggests that humans are, by nature and without political intervention, peaceable, cooperative, and selfless (2002, p. 6). Pinker explains that this belief underlies much of politics, the hope for cultural improvement, and a peaceable vision of future society (2002, p. 26). However, this belief effects not just proactive policy, but also inspires fear by invoking the slippery-slope argument of innatist theories, arguing that they are grounds for all the social ills we fear (racism, socio-economic prejudice) (Pinker, 2002, p. 28). The Ghost in the Machine provides the last piece in Pinker’s framework: the theory that the body and mind are distinct from one another, the mind acting independently from the body and providing an indivisible meta awareness and guidance to the human being (2002, p. 9). This thought seems to be supported by a creationist viewpoint, as it alludes to a being similar to a puppeteer that forms and initially animates the mind of living beings in their beginning (Pinker, 2002, p. 29). Pinker points out early on that one key inconsistency is individuals’ efforts to improve society (2002, p. 28). Improvements made to society by products of that society seems to be a circular logic and ineffective approach to the perfecting process (Pinker, 2002, p. 28). The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin begins with several anecdotes in the form of a letter to Benjamin’s son. This is the first encounter we have, as the reader, with the aspect of the written word. Franklin writes that he has “had pleasure in obtaining any little anecdotes of my [his ancestors]” (1). Franklin sought a purpose to write about his own life so that it would be shared with his son. He shares his life story of how he went from being poor to rich and famous, and provides a blueprint for the life he hopes his son will be able to embody, as he grows older. The power of the written word is seen through this letter as Franklin can’t relive his life, but he can rewrite anything that he wishes. Franklin proceeds to admit that he may “change some sinister accidents and events for others for favorable” (1) as he attempts to recollect his life through writing. Franklin is able to establish formal reasons for writing this letter to his son, while incorporating playful chatter as well.
