Should the Morning-After Pill be Available Over-the-Counter?
Last Tuesday, advisors to the Food and Drug administration voted to make the "morning-after" pill available over-the-counter (1). The FDA has not yet acted on this recommendation (1). The morning-after pill is the vernacular term for emergency contraception, specifically, two pills with the commercial name, "Plan B", which have the ability to inhibit and, depending on one's perspective, possibly to terminate unwanted pregnancies. The FDA approved the first version of the morning-after pill for prescription use in 1998 (1). The issue today is whether it should be available without a prescription.
The morning-after pill is essentially a high dosage of the birth control pill (2). It can contain progesterone, estrogen, or both (2). . It can prevent fertilization in the fallopian tubes by altering sperm and egg transport or by preventing or delaying ovulation, and it can prevent fertilized eggs, or zygotes, from implanting in the uterus by thickening the uterine lining (1). It is not effective if the process of implantation has already begun (5). The morning-after pill is not to be confused with RU-486, the so-called abortion pill, which terminates a zygote implanted in the uterine lining (1).
All three mechanisms of the morning-after pill do not necessarily all take place every time it is used and it is impossible to determine which, if any, of them prevented implantation in any successful case (3). One controversial ethical issue surrounding the morning-after pill is whether it is tantamount to abortion. The debate concerns whether pregnancy and life begin with a fertilized egg or with its implantation.
If conditions in the uterus are ideal, a zygote will be...

Born on April 16, 1919 in Centralia, Washington, Mercier Philip Cunningham was the second of three sons. His father, Clifford D. Cunningham, was an attorney in their small town and his mother, Mayme Joach Cunningham, an adventurous mother, who loved traveling the world, and Merce described to have, “an enormous energy and quite independent spirit (Merce Cunningham: A Lifetime of Dance).” At the beginning of his journey, Merce sparked his passion for dance under the study of Maude Barrett, a retired circus performer and vaudevillian (vaudeville was form of theatrical entertainment in the late 19th century and early 20th century, which utilizes pantomime, dance, dialog, and song, and is usually comical (Merriam-Webster)). Barrett was a fellow parishioner and neighbor of Cunningham’s, who ran the local Barrett School of Dance in Centralia. Here, he was paired up with Barrett’s daughter and learned the basics: tap dance. Eventually ballroom dancing would be added to his repertoire. Looking back in time, Merce would note that Barrett’s energy and passion shaped his outlook on dance stating, “It was a kind of theater energy and devotion

The definition of hacking has undergone some changes in the past few years. At first it identified people “who enjoys modifying and subverting system, whether technological bureaucratic or sociological.” (Lemos, 2002) In the last decade hacking has evolved to describe “those people with a hands-on interest in computer security and circumventing such security. (lemos 2002) As you explore deeper into the digital landscape it becomes clearer that these hackers are sub divided into three groups of intermingling individuals classified by a system of hats.
Black hat hackers majorly damage computer users and large organizations by exploiting sensitive data, shutdown of servers and modifying data in websites and network.
White hat hackers are ethical hackers, and their purpose is for evaluating the security measures of a system by conducting penetration testing and other exploitative acts against the network, with the hopes of exposing the vulnerabilities so that the customer is aware. Take a hacker that is hired by a company to do penetration testing on its network while another company is suffering from a hacker that was able to exploit a vulnerability in a Microsoft Office package and back door into the network, only to run malicious scripts that removed all of the system files…that is just an example. There is clearly a difference, however. Hacking is ethical if it benefits the client. Hacking is not ethical if it seeks to only benefit the originator of the hack, based upon malicious intent or personal beliefs. Going back to Kevin Mitnick who again was the most notorious hacker of all time, stealing code and causing over $300 million in damages (www.pbs.org). He works as a white hat hacker or an ethical hacker, servicing companies that he used to target as a black hat hacker. He works for the good of the
The world of hacking cannot be placed into clearly defined positive or negative categories. When people hear the word hacker they tend to think about someone that defies or breaks the law. Everything in life has two sides of it the good and the bad, that is how people can understand a subject if they see both sides. Hackers can cause havoc around the world within the systems they get into just to get what they wish. On the other hand hackers are an essential help when we are in trouble and someone needs to find info inside a cellphone to try and help if someone is missing. There are two kinds of hackers; the most familiar is described as a criminal, dangerous and devious. The other kind is not as familiar and behaves in more ethical ways.
