Are we taught to be kind or do we grow into it? That is the question many have asked over time. Some may say you do not have to be taught kindness. Others might ask why you need to learn kindness, isn’t it something everyone is born with as a child. However, that is not the case,for example, If someone was raised to respect adults, they would grow into a very respectful person throughout their lives, compared to someone who has not. Therefore, those who are not shown what kindness is may fall into a self preservation attitude towards others and even themselves. When kindness comes to mind people do not consider that it needs to be taught and addressed to their children. Recent studies at the Northeastern University in Boston, show dominance of self preservation in those that were not taught kindness (BBC News). Their experiment was designed to encourage people to pick up and share different forms of compassion mediation. It involved a group that was taught the compassion mediation and a group that was not.
