Why should class rank be included in high school transcripts? Why should it even matter? Class rank is where you stand academically compared to your class. It is based on the average of all your classes combined. It tells you where you stand in the class, whether it is the highest or the lowest. This has been a big debate for the last couple of months. Between the parents and the School Committee, it came to a conclusion that class rank is going to be included in student transcripts. I think transcripts should be a reflection of just that one student instead of comparing him/her to the rest of the class. The classes are small which means class rank is not an accurate reflection of ability. There is a big difference between being ranked 3 out of 500 then being ranked 3 out of 3. Being ranked 3 out of 500, you made the top 0.6% while being ranked 3 out of 3, you are ranked last. Your GPA could be .0000001 away from a 4.0 but your rank says you are the lowest rank in your class. Natalie, the student assistant for the University of Hawaii- Hilo’s Admission office, said UH Hilo’s requirements do not include class rank. They require an applicant’s grade-point average and request the SAT or ACT scores. In my opinion, I think UH Hilo not requiring class rank helps lower inaccuracy and misjudgment. Mr. Bowers, the Kwajalein Jr./Sr. High school counselor, states, “Someone has to be the first rank and someone has to be last in rank.” There is no choice or say in this. Again, you could have the same GPA as the student above you, but his/her higher classes decide their rank is higher than yours. Also, Mr. Bowers pointed out that transfer students bring classes that the Kwajalein Jr./Sr. High School doesn’t offer. The article written by Michael Thomsen addresses the issue: should we as a society continue using a standardized grading system. There are many issues one might face when about to take a test, some students may "have something major interfering with their ability to focus, may miss or not perform well" (Baxter,Mella). No test score can show what that kid has been through, over come, or is going through at the time of the test. There is also no way to show how many hours each student studied. Just because a student does not perform well on one test, should not foreshadow their future.
In the regular grading scale, grades do vary widely because of these four factors: a teacher's conception of achievement, a teacher's sense of equity and rigor a student's effort. The student's knowledge is based on the graded assignments that the student has completed. Getting rid of these standardized testings removes the insecurities that student's have due to low score and many more factors. The educational system must keep a certain number of children in schools at all costs. Sometimes the system is not concerned with the performance of the students as long as they are in school. If teachers graded the way they should, the failure rates would be much higher than they are today.

As a student you are evaluated everyday, but have you ever desired to be the one doing the grading? This is a thought provoking idea. Teachers grade students on almost everything these days; including participation and behavior. So wouldn’t it be nice to return the favor?
