As a United States citizen, many people in the young adult age group have restriction of what they can and cannot do. Recently, the Government is trying to pass a law that gives them the control to regulate and control our own personal diets. If this were to pass globally, there it would give more power, to the already powerful government. The government should regulate the American diet because it would restrict from making our own decisions, having our own unique diets or having binges on food, and make special occasions in the public school system less special by not being able to bring sweet treats. The first claim that we believe as American U.S citizens is the government already has so much power and giving them the right to control what we eat is giving the government more power. Ultimately , if they got a hold of this right, we as Americans would be closer to having our individuality stripped away. First, it is our diets that they control of and have the power over. What is next, government control over our …show more content…
individual brains? The government wants to control our diets and food intake because they claim obesity is costing them more and this one health problem is killing many of Americans each year. We have to disagree on this because by this excerpt from the article “Should the Government Tell You What To Eat?” it states “ For as long as i can remember, Americans have been told that something they eat or drink is dangerous to their health, even though Americans now enjoy the highest life expectancy since such data has been studied.” - Alan Caruba. So as a result some Americans are dying of obesity each year. Yes, this is true but the majority of Americans are not. Actually it is the complete opposite, the other majority of Americans are thriving in a positive health direction and are living longer than other homo-sapiens that live in places besides America. We should not all have to give up our individuality of choosing what we can eat when it is the other majority of Americans who classify as obese. The second claim is we as Americans can control our own decisions just like the government can. If the government monitors and sets laws for the American civilization to follow on a daily basis and the decisions that they make for our country. We should be able to make such miniscule decisions on what we as individuals can and can not eat. Also the government is trying to pass and spread erratic decisions all across America but, when you think about it some people have special diets such as vegetarianism, pescetarianism, and veganism. If they cut out such things, such as fatty acids and saturated fats. Americans that fall under these special diet categories might not even get enough protein on a daily basis. Potentially these Americans who fall under this category could have more health problems than people who are obese. The government claims, that this would help America as a whole, but, since everyone’s body is different we choose our own diets because we know what we cannot handle. Finally, the last claim that we are backing up is that, this so called “healthy” diet that they are trying to force upon every single person in America is not even healthy.
In fact from a excerpt from the article, “Should The Government Tell You What To Eat?” it states, “ One consequence is that in cutting back on fats, we are now eating a lot more carbohydrates- at least 25% more since the early 1970’s…. instead of meat, eggs and cheese, we’re eating more pasts, grains, fruit and starchy vegetables such as potatoes.” -Alan Caruba. That is not the problem here. The problem is that all the starch turns into glucose, this makes the body release the hormone called insulin. A lot of intake and digestion of these carbohydrates can relate in diabetes and even heart disease. Do not always assume that since the government is our country’s controller and that they have the best decisions for the American
civilization. Don’t get us wrong though the people that are for this topic, we totally understand where everything they believe in is coming from. They might see this topic as a less of a struggle on them and it could really take off less stress of aesthetic appearances and indecisiveness of what to choose to eat. Also we can see the people that are for this to be totally easily manipulated. Now that you and your mind have been opened up to all new types of information, and the result of what would happen if the government regulated our country’s diet. We hope that if you were for this idea in the beginning your opinion is now skewed to thinking that you are the only person that can say what you as a personal individual can and can not handle, when it comes to your daily food diet. So instead of skipping out on that cheeseburger from In- N- Out every once in awhile, go for it just eat whatever you want, but in moderation of course.
Regulating what the government should control and what they should not was one of the main arguments our founding fathers had to deal with when creating our nation, and to this day this regulation is one of the biggest issues in society. Yet, I doubt our founding fathers thought about the idea that the food industry could one day somewhat control our government, which is what we are now facing. Marion Nestles’ arguments in the book Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health deal with how large food companies and government intertwine with one another. She uses many logical appeals and credible sources to make the audience understand the problem with this intermingling. In The Politics of Food author Geoffrey Cannon further discusses this fault but with more emotional appeals, by use of personal narratives. Together these writers make it dramatically understandable why this combination of the food industry and politics is such a lethal ordeal. However, in The Food Lobbyists, Harold D. Guither makes a different viewpoint on the food industry/government argument. In his text Guither speaks from a median unbiased standpoint, which allows the reader to determine his or her own opinions of the food industries impact on government, and vise versa.
Food science has also done some damage to people’s diets by replacing fresh food in our supermarkets to aisles of boxed and frozen food that lack nutrients in them This problem was noticed in 1977 when a document called Dietary Goals for the United States was created after rates of coronary heart disease had soared in America since World War II. In 1977, the lipid hypothesis, it proposes that dietary or saturated fat causes heart disease by raising the concentration of cholesterol in the blood. Government has been changing the Dietary Guidelines for the United States quite often which proves not even scientists know everything about nutrition. Nutritionism has led to the creation of processed foods which has been
Because the modern diet is centered around sugar, people are drawn to eat unhealthily. Most food we eat that is advertised
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
After taking a closer look at the American diet, it 's clear to see Americans are in a lot of trouble. The average American diet is filled with lots of greasy fast food, large cuts of meat, salty junk food and sugar-laden sodas. This tradition is then passed on to the children and creates a legacy of ailments, disease and a lower quality of life. To many people, plant-based eating sounds like a death sentence. In reality, it 's all about getting creative with the foods you already like. It also involves intentional meal-planning and organization. However, your health is worth it. The ability to experience a better quality of life should be motivation enough to start changing your eating habits. Consider a few of these simple ways to incorporate plant-based eating into each meal without eliminating delicious taste.
The government plays an important part in our safety, but many people think they take it too far. Recently, people have thought more and more about how much involvement the government should have when it comes to food regulations. Some people think the government's involvement in regulating food would greatly help obesity rates, and others think the country's obesity rates would show little to no improvement. Although no one cause of obesity exists, and no government regulations will likely alter someone’s lifestyle choices, the government should implement some regulations by implementing programs to educate and encourage citizens to lead a healthier life and by requiring companies to list a full disclosure of ingredients on their products.
Lunch is one of the most important meals of the day and is consumed mostly in school cafeterias for children and adolescence. Wholesome lunches are vital in maintaining a healthy metabolism and give children energy for the rest of the school day. Children are advised to eat healthily but do not always do so because the choices of tastier, fatty foods offered in school cafeterias. The National School Lunch Program, NSLP, which is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools set nutritious guidelines for lunches served in school cafeterias (USDA). However, school campuses still offer foods high in fat as well as selling candy, chips, and soda in their vending machines, as well as their school shops. In order
In America itself only about two percent of kids eat a healthy diet. The topic I
...ues. Because nutrition, obesity, and overweight have already turned into a matter of national concern, the government should definitely have a say in our diets, to give us access to healthier foods and to restrict availability of foods, which damage our health.
Do you remember your favorite “School Lunch”? I do, I essentially had two favorites; pizza and hamburgers with fries. Think back, wasn’t there at least one school lunch that the lunch ladies made that everyone was so excited to eat. Kids that habitually brought their super hero lunch box with thermos would leave it at home and be in line for pizza or burgers and fries. We could also go back for “seconds”, it was the best meal of the week including what was served at home. The federal government has been involved in the NSLP (National School Lunch Program) since 1946 with the implementation of the National School Lunch Act. These initial programs developed the commodity distribution program for schools, institutions, needy households, summer
The government should not be able to force us to do things. They can take away our rights from the amendments. We live in America and we should not be forced to do anything we don't want unless it is taking away life from another human being, harming other human beings. If they can get away with this they are gonna try and try to push further out and they are gonna try to overcome other rights. We have the 27 amendments for a reason so we can have our rights. If we start letting them take away our freedoms and rights then they will be able to turn this country into a controlling health world. Think about it for a minute! Do you really wanna be bossed around and told what you should do? When you go to McDonalds do you ever want to be able to go in and order a Big Mac with a large soda? I know I do! I don’t think it is the government's place to tell us what we can and can not eat. That is the consumer's
Food is a major part of everyone’s everyday life. It’s hard to imagine life without the chocolate cake on your fingers or a carne asada taco in your mouth. Enjoying delicious desserts and fast food seem extremely magnificent to eat and spend money buying them. Although, there have been many controversies in the United States on how it’s the largest country with the most obesity regarding children, which affects their health, many people are still going throughout their day snacking. Many people in America are having full course meals with thousands of calories in one sitting not knowing the short term or long term side effects that are going to take a huge toll on their lives. Food is delicious, but it comes with a secret behind the savoriness/sweetness.
“Healthy eating” means eating a variety of foods that gives you the nutrients you need to maintain your health, feeling good with your health conditions, and having enough energy throughout the day (Nordqvist). A poor diet can cause harm a person’s daily life activities. Research from Eating Healthy Might Prove Too Expensive for Poor ABC News shows, that the price of eating healthy foods may be expensive to a family who earns a low-income. So, eating fast foods may be more convenient for them knowing that the prices are way less. However, everyone should make the effort to stop eating foods that will later on harm your health. As mentioned in the article “Healthy Eating”, “Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically
To survive in life we need to consume food whether it is for nutritional value or for the pure enjoyment of its savory taste. Individuals, not the government, have the right to choose what and when to eat; but good nutrition is important to maintain health and live a long and happy life. People need to make choices everyday about what they put into their bodies. Without proper nutrition, our bodies may not be able to function correctly. Most adults know what is good and bad for the body. We all know that diets rich in fruits and vegetables fuel the body in a healthy way and that protein gives us energy. Although we know what food is best for our bodies, each individual has a personal choice of what they put into their bodies and that should not be dictated by the government, even though
Nutrition is the process of obtaining and consuming the right nutrients you need in order to grow and survive. These nutrients consist of water, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, and fats. What you choose to eat has a significant impact on your well being, growth and overall health. Bad nutrition can lead to lifelong consequences such as Diabetes, High blood pressure, Obesity, Cardiovascular disease and even some Cancers. A healthy diet helps people manage a desirable body weight and composition that allows them to do their daily mental and physical activities (Youdim 1). If you eat the correct meals it provides energy and even helps boost your immune system. There are many examinations available to you to check if you’re on the
