INTRODUCTION: Why do baseball players, who play sports that were invented for fun, earn a 1,000 times more than teachers who work to teach and guide our youth to be successful citizens? Jobs like school teacher, police officer, doctor, firefighter, and construction worker - all who perform duties that we can’t live without - are paid considerably less than professional athletes, nationally acclaimed entertainers, and actors. Teachers hold a major role in the educational system and without them most people would not be able to function properly in life. Why is it that teachers are paid less than professional athletes? Educators deserve a more comparable salary than they receive because they are beneficial to life, make people successful, and help people grow. BODY: When determining the wages of teachers and athletes and few factors come into play. “First, recognize we don't have a national economic dictator or governing board that sets what various jobs will be paid. Instead, we have a virtual economic “free for all” where workers and businesses are free to negotiate, accept, and reject job offers and demands” (Walden 1). In this situation it all comes down to …show more content…
supply and demand. Jobs with high demand and low supply will pay the most; jobs with low supply and a high supply will pay the least, and the pay of other jobs will be in the middle (Walden 1). The way businesses attract people is by appealing to them with money. “Businesses want to hire people who will make a lot of money for them – and the more money, the better. Workers who can pull in big bucks for a business will be more sought after (the demand for them will be higher) than workers who can only bring in small change” (Walden 1). “Why are diamonds so expensive and water so cheap, when water is absolutely essential to the life of every human, and diamonds are basically luxuries that every person is capable of living very well without”(McLaughlin 1)? “Whether a major league baseball player has a banner season next year, or whether he breaks every record in the books, it will have not one iota of impact on what kind of children we raise.
It will not affect the quality of our public officials nor will it determine who will be performing surgery, repairing cars, or educating our young 20 years down the road”(Cunningham 1). Teachers have a direct impact on society and affect how are youth will develop in the future. Children are our future and in today's teachers are the ones who spend the most time with them. “From the time that they begin as mere babies in preschool and over the next 12 to 20 years, young minds, personalities, and attitudes are daily molded by people who we pay less each year than Derek Jeter will make with one at bat”(Cunningham
1). “According to the Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends 2001, mid-level accountants earned an average (of) $52,664, computer system analysts an average $71,155 and engineers an average $74,920; teachers averaged only $43,250 in 2001”(Johnson 1). CONCLUSION: Teachers are paid considerably less than athletes despite their jobs being more beneficial to life. Educators should be paid more than they currently receive due to the fact that they are needed for life to function properly. “Without teachers, schools are little more than buildings and equipment. If higher-paying careers continue to attract the best and the brightest students, there will not only be a shortage of teachers, but the teachers available may not have the best qualifications. Our youth will suffer. And when youth suffers, the future suffers”(Holewa 1).

Salary schedules for public school teachers are almost a common feature in public school districts. These schedules largely determine the salaries for the teachers. A single district schedule sets the pay for hundreds of thousands of teachers in thousands of schools (Besharov 1). The key factor that influences the pay for the teachers in the salary schedules include experience in terms of years and the total number of graduate course works that a teacher has completed. This paper will look at the cons and pros of the salary schedules in terms of an economic point of view.
Should college athletes get paid an additional salary? They are an important assets to universities and colleges, so why should they not? How else would universities justify taking advantage of these young men and women? These are questions that arise when pondering the issue. This has been a large controversy over the years of rather or not college athletes should be paid, more specifically football and basketball players. However, they fail to mention that colleges are only considering paying a select few, the stars of the sports. Every single sport in colleges is making revenue for those campuses, making colleges money hungry. Thus, if they decide to only pay a select few, would that leave out women sports all together? Why pay college athletes more on top of everything they already receive? Most college athletes receive free tuition, medical care, meal plans and room and board, which can acquaint to more than a quarter million dollars for their entire college career (Scoop, 2013). Why ask for more? What is this teaching our youth? They should appreciate their chance to do what they love and value the education they are receiving, because that education is far more valuable than a potential sports salary. Even though colleges and college athletes have a few good points on why they believe they should get paid, over all the issue is larger than that, college athletes already make their share of “money” through free education and much more.

Americans believe that athletes, celebrities, and CEOs are the highest paid jobs in America. This belief is true however the average income of these three jobs is nowhere near what the perception is. Athletes are the most confusing when it comes to pay since people do not factor in that an average professional is only 4.85 years, NFL is 3.5 years, MLB is 5.6 years, NBA is 4.8, and NHL is 5.5 years, (RSVLTS, 2013) United States Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that an average income for “athletes and sport competitors” was only $47,710 (BLS, 2017). People believe that athletes are only the stars you see on television, but this is not the case. Athletes are risking their health for that paycheck. They spend a majority of their lives in the gym or on
Can you imagine having a job for nine months out of the year that makes you work from 8:15 AM until 3:30 PM on every weekday and not getting paid for all of your hard, tedious work? To most of you that sounds ridiculous. That’s because it is. Students have to go through this painful process from September to May and usually don’t have anything to show for it. They dedicate their whole lives to getting all A’s on their report card and when they finally do all they usually get is a pat on the back. Thus, students should get paid for having good grades because it takes lots of hard work to get those grades, it would cause more students to strive for good grades, and it would eliminate the need for a job, which would allow for more studying time.
College football takes heavy equipment, practice, possibilities of concussion . and popularly televised games. Golf, on the other hand, is not an intense sport, such as football. The question declared, should both sports get paid the same? Each and every sport has a different level of popularity and intensity. For a football player to receive the same amount of pay as an Quidditch player. This said, if athletes were paid, how would they pay them and how much to each sport or athlete? If colleges began paying college athletes, a controversy would start, upon who receive more or less pay. Every sport would have to consider the factors to determine who should be paid more, the factors, the popularity of the sport, amount of practice, and effort. Some of that factors would be judged with bias from the managers, causing an argument upon who shall receive higher pay. Another factor,is which gendered sport would receive a higher pay due to popularity. Men’s sports appear more popular and important than women’s sports. A controversy would arise within the sports teams,on which athlete should be compensated more based on how they play. Although colleges could regulate a minimum, maximum, and median in which all athletes must be paid. Still , this regulation would not last long due to different positions and popularity of each athlete. To avoid all of these controversies,it would appear fair to not pay the athletes and just give
It’s the last day of sixth grade and Jimmy has been expecting money in return for the hard work that he has put into his grades. He has mostly A’s on his report card and is figuring out how much money he will get and what he’s going to buy. But will Jimmy want money for doing what is expected from him, instead of being motivated intrinsically by the value of hard work? In the future Jimmy may have trouble with simple tasks because he has not learned how to motivate himself without money.
When addressing the value of entertainment, there is without a doubt, that we as a society value entertainment highly. But there is no reason that these athletes, who are here to merely entertain us, get paid higher wages than those that save our lives and teach us such as medical doctors and teachers. I find it ridiculous that players make millions of dollars a year, and yet demand more. The entertainment that these athletes provide is solely entertainment; it is not essential to the function or productivity of society. If I were to become a professional football player I would not complain about my salary for many reasons. I am playing the sport that I love and getting paid for it. The minimum wage for football is well over $100,000 a year, as is for many professional sports. These reasons by their lonesome are enough to warrant that the salary professional athletes are paid is suffice.
There is no more critical role in our current society than that of a teacher’s. Teachers help shape the minds of the future. Tomorrow's engineers, scientists, politicians, and educators are all greatly influenced by today's instructors. Without teachers society would not be anywhere near where it is now, and only a select few would have access to learning. Sadly however important teachers are in human civilization, they are still drastically understated, unrecognized and under paid.
Why do teachers get paid so much less than sports players? A teacher mentors a child or teenager and gives them knowledge. A sports player plays a game in which they are good at and love to do. So why does a sports player live a dream life earning millions of dollars a year while a teacher is stuck living the middle class life.
Cash for grades Students are getting paid by high educators for their grades. There are arguments on this new technique which raises concerns. Parents of children getting paid are having educators. As well students are feeling that they “need” to earn as much cash as they can instead of focusing on their own education.
Should students be paid be paid for having good grades? By:Cabe Macfarlane If we are paying for better grades, we will want to do better in school. We don't have to pay us students for D's and F's, this is rewards for GOOD GRADES, not just for being at school. If they pay us for good grades, we will learn that working hard and making good choices does have its rewards.
Almost every time the topic of professional athletes salaries is brought up the phrase “Those greedy football players are earning in a year more than what teachers and nurses will make in their entire lives,” makes an appearance. The mathematics behind this are correct; however the point is invalid. People think that the athletes are taking money away from the nurses, teachers and firefighters that, in their opinion, the nurses and firefighters work harder than the athletes that are getting paid such immense sums of cash. “The fact is, Steven Gerrard could take a 90% pay cut tomorrow and no nurse anywhere is going to benefit from it.” (Ator 5). On the contrary, the Liverpool star would would be paying the Government much less in income taxes. In any sport, if the player wages go down the owners are the only ones that are going to benefit. The only thing that will happen is that the the billionaire owners will have more money to spend on their yachts, while the average fan will see no change in prices (5). Fans are the ones who are willing to pay all of their money to see their favorite team play, buy over-priced beer, food, and jerseys (Mueller 21). All of the fans money is not going to was...
It may be true; such people like the president of the United States and doctors don’t make a fraction of what a celebrity makes on one movie. Many can argue that people with the occupations such as a doctor who saves people lives on a daily basis, should be paid more. In like manner the president of the United States only makes 400,000 dollars a year. As compared to an actor that works on a movie for six months at a time, gets paid millions of dollars. Another argument that I have come across, is that some people say that teachers have to work eight hours a day, 5 days a week and ten months out of the year. Teachers are important because they reach out to kids, getting them ready for life. On the other hand, society sees a football player only is around for entertaining purposes. People see it as a teacher is only making 40,000 a year, while a football player makes over forty million.
