Students spend approximately 6 hours in school on an average day. However, not all students in put all of their effort into their course work. How can students be motivated to work harder? A solution that some school programs have suggested is paying students for their grades and test scores. Though some people may agree and support this new idea, upon looking at the bigger picture, the obvious choice should be no. Even if parents believe that this will help their kids, they should think twice. Kids should never be offered cash rewards for their work because it places pressure on teachers and students, disrupts a child’s natural motivation for learning, and money bribes are socially unacceptable as well as have bad results.
To begin, students should not be paid, as it puts pressure on teachers and students. Articles by the NEA, or National Education Association, claim,”Many teachers also say paying for grades leads to practical problems in their classrooms, including pressure to inflate grades and conflict between students and parents.” Kids constantly feel pressured to be a

Psychologists Bob Brooks and Sam Goldstein explain that research by Edward Deci and others shows that most children, by nature are motivated to learn. “External motivators may be effective and well intended.” says Goldstein, ”but they clearly work against the continued development of a child’s intrinsic motivation..It doesn’t really teach kids the reward of learning for learning’s sake.” In other words. Kids start to lose interest in the material they are studying. They are more focused on the reward (money) instead. In the future, students will no longer be as motivated to work hard in the future. Clearly and obviously, students should not be paid for inflating their test scores and grades because it alters students ’viewpoints about their coursework and kills off their natural motivation to
“Beginning in 2007, his [Roland Fryer Jr.] project paid out $6.3 million to students in 261 urban schools...from low-income families” (Sandel 52). As a result, paying students for good grades has an impact on many people, not only students but teachers as well. Students should be paid for good grades because they will be able to save the money they earn for the future, it will motivate them to do well in school, and it will increase their scores on AP exams. With the money that students earn for their good grades, they can save it for their future. According to student Brett Upperman, “‘Kids need money so we can save it for college.
Did you know that schools in some places are actually giving kids money for good grades? If schools wish students to be self-motivated and have a desire for learning because it’s valuable to them, then schools should not pay students for excellent grades. Paying students for good grades can lead to kids having pressure to earn good grades. In addition, the students who are payed will not succeed academically in the long run. Also, they are not self-motivated so when they are not getting paid they will stop trying. From pressuring to get good grades, not succeeding academically in the long run, and not having self-motivation, there are several negative effects of paying students for marvelous grades.
Some parents reward their child for the outstanding grades on their report card; nowadays schools have programs which reward the students instead of the parents. The Cash for Grades Program is a program which rewards cash incentives to all hard-working students in the school system. This program is “jointly funded by public money and private donations” (“Cash for Grades”). People from the community or successful companies financially support this program because they understand the role of education in a child’s life, even if it will cost them to donate money for the children. “At each evaluation, they can earn $50 for every A they receive, $35 for each B and $20 for every C” (“Cash for Grades”). The goal of the program is to reach out and help children from all social classes, either by cash or motivation. Many programs like the Cash for Grades Program such as Gr...
Many high school students have a job that they go to after school which takes up their time that they could be using for homework and studying. If we were to pay these students for their good grades then they would no longer have the need for a job and could get even better grades and would even be able to take harder classes because of the extra time they would have to study and for homework. With the extra time that students would receive they could progress their education even
I believe that giving out money to students and teachers that do well in the end of level testing is an inspirational idea. It will help the students stay motivated and they will want to learn in order to achieve the goal. It will also give teachers the motivation to instruct us better and help all the children learn equally. Now leading up to my essay I hope you will understand how well this could help the students and teachers throughout the world.
Students should be paid for having good grades. According to Psychology Today, the United States has fallen behind other nations in education. In addition to this, approximately one in four students in the U.S. drops out of school before graduation. The main reason for this is that students have little to no motivation. Students are either bored with school, or they are distracted by the other things that go on in their lives such as sports, jobs, friends and their own family life.
The average 2016 college graduate comes out of college with “37, 172” in student loan debt. This is the burden that students have to worry about and then they have only six months to find a job that can cover loan payments. Personally financing part of higher education has become difficult in today’s economy. Thus, many policymaker, politicians and parents wonder if colleges should be free. I believe that free college tuition should be provided because it will help the US economy grow and help students focus on their studies.
Thousand of student can’t wait for college by doing well in highschool but many can’t, the big list of cost makes every student worried how to pay and stress about the student loans that come with them for years to come (Heidi). Some students think the stress, energy and cost make going to college not worth the time they have plus the difficulty of trying to get in college making it hard enough. College education should not be very expensive because some people cannot afford the cost causing less and less people can go because of the rising price, people barely get paid more than people who do not go to college depending on the job, the debt that people go to makes them pay them off getting not much of a paycheck to support themself. college prices are rising causing people to not be able to move up in their education and possibly make their future better. while people can get cheaper ways to pay, many people do not get scholarships and others have to pay off loans.
One of the main reasons to paying students is that it might help the people that are having trouble stay in school. In the article “should you bribe your kids to get good grades”. In paragraph 13 it said that “it could be a way to get them a jump-start to get them to try a little bit harder”. Someday i do not want to come to school but if i knew i was going to get paid for grades i would be up here all day. Some schools or parents don't think kid or students should get paid. They think they should be able to do it without getting paid. But i still believe that whatever u have to do to keep your kids in school is a good idea. Paying student helps them stay in school.
that this is because children are †̃intrinsically motivated to learnâ€TM and do not need rewards from adult for motivation. (http://psych.colorado.edu/~colunga/p4684/piaget.pdf)
A college education has become a must today, which raises the big question, "Why isn’t college free?" Students throughout the United States are focusing on their academics, hoping that their grades reflect their effort. Having the United States government financing, many students’ education has become in our rebuilding economy. Thus, many students, professors, and parents are wondering if free college tuition should be granted. I believe the U.S. government should fund a free college education or add it to the tax system because it will help students focus on their studies instead of working long hours to repay harassing student loans and encourage them to work harder in college.
In conclusion, students should be paid to do well in school because it has many benefits to the student. Those benefits include motivation to get good grades, the money would help the student financially, and the student would learn how to manage their money more effectively. School is a big part of every person’s life, so it should be more rewarding to the
Because the process of learning is intrinsic, motivation should come from within the learners. Teachers should therefore ensure children do internal processing of information while they engage them in activities that create curiosity.
Tim Meiser said “its more about me trying my best, giving my best effort,” I think what he said is right because they need to try there hardest. It can also cause bullies and let others down by telling a student this and that because one got low cash and the other got high cash. As soon as they found out that the students who didn’t get money because they were getting so low test scores they stopped it. The students with excellent test scores got bummed out because they weren’t going to get paid anymore and their grades started
Consequently, the negative effect of extrinsic motivation can sometime constrain and override intrinsic motivation which can overlook a person's happiness and interest by pressure to pursue an activity for the wrong reasoning. To enumerate, not all extrinsic motivation is an abysmal theory in view of disciplinary. For instant, as parents, our aim is to help mentor and guide our offspring's toward their future. As a guardian this duties takes a lot of patient, support, encouragement and sometimes reinforcement, whether it is compliance in education, sports or just everyday behavior. Whatever your child's age, it is important to consider that there is a fine line of reinforcement. Therefore, to have a desire outcomes as an end result, there has to be a proper balance or reasonable and achievable goal without making an individual feel suppressed.
