The question is “Should students be given physical education credit if they participate in a school sport?” At first, I thought no way! That would be too much like a “give away” credit. Getting credit for a sport? After really thinking about the question I changed my mind. Credit is given for playing in the band or singing in a choir why not sports? I did a little searching on the Internet and found an editorial by Justin Koepell. Koepell is a member of the editorial staff of The New Perspective on the website www.digitalnp.com. His essay made several good points on why students should be given credit for playing sports. Sports like football, basketball, hockey, and volleyball are team sports. Being on a sport’s team prepares a student for the real world. Businesses today emphasize teams. G.E. for example has a great team system. Some colleges even teach working in teams. Students are pushing for more at our local school. Sports take time during the school day and that time usually ninety minutes should count for credits toward graduation. Football, for example, sometimes required students to play away from home, at night, or during the day. Football also requires students to practice late in the afternoon and sometimes on Saturdays. Those hours should be allow students to earn credits toward graduation. No one wants to work (and FOOTBALL) is work for no pay. The payoff should be two to four credits per year of playing any sport.
