Playing sports gives people a competitive edge that can be used when out in the workforce or the business world. Participation in sports helps keep teens out of trouble by taking up their free time which could be used for mischief, gives them an opportunity to meet new friends for positive role models, provides teens an outlet to develop a higher self-esteem, and also enables student to set goals for on and off the field.
In conclusion, after careful examination, it can be established that contrary to the common belief that sports detract students from academic success, several studies and findings suggest that participation in high school sports do not limit student’s ability to perform better at school. In most cases, participation facilitates it by improving concentration, memory and self-esteem. Therefore, counsellors, parents and other adult figures should not discourage students from participating in sports and more effort should be put forward to encourage students in sports participation.
