Should professional athletes be paid less? This past summer athletes have been paid over millions of dollars to resign contracts to play for a professional sports team. Professional athletes should be paid less money because doctors, the president, and other people aren’t paid as much as these athletes. Athletes get paid more than doctors and doctors go to college for eight whole years while these athletes go to college for one year, so they eventually make the pros. Doctors and surgeons save lives everyday and they don’t get nearly as much as the players in professional sports. “Americans are struggling to make mortgage payments, student loan payments and find good employment, it sometimes becomes frustrating to hear about someone who makes millions playing a game demand more money and then get it” (Mueller 6). Doctors are more skilled than athletes because they have to use little tools to save lives while athletes are just having fun. The president of the United States gets paid less money than these athletes. The president literally runs the country. Without there being a president there would be no professional sports because there would be other things to worry about. The president only gets paid $400,000 and average professional athletes get paid $5.15 million. “Don’t get me wrong, but paying an athlete $13.5 million …show more content…
for a single year is overpriced” (Patel 3). There are people throughout this world that have to work as hard as they can to earn a little amount of money to provide for their family.
There are single parents that have enough money to put food in front of their children, but these athletes play a game to make millions. They also get to have fun while doing it. “Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of one’s work” (Bhagat 2). A lot of these athletes take for granted the money they get and spend it on things that don’t matter while other families could use it to buy a new pair of clothes or some new
shoes. Athletes get paid plenty of money, but they shouldn’t get paid as much as someone just as valuable as them. For example, doctors, the president, and poor people are all just as valuable as a professional athlete. They do everything they can to make money, but the professional athletes make it look so easy. They don’t do a surgeon and save someone’s life or make a law and help the country for things in the future. They don’t go out on the streets and ask for change. They just get money handed to them for playing a game for fun. It’s not fair for everyone else.
I have decided to write a response paper to Ekow N. Yankah’s: “Why N.C.A.A. Athletes Shouldn’t Be Paid”. Although I enjoyed reading his perspective, I do not agree with his statement which addresses that student-athletes shouldn 't get paid. Universities are using their student-athlete’s popularity to promote their athletics program while the student-athletes are unable to promote their own image. Student-athletes work hard day in and day out, basically like having a full time job. Which makes time is also very limited during the day for student athletes to get a real job to pay for the extra expenses that they need. Also, most of the time coaches will not allow the student athletes to work, because of their conflicting schedules with practice.
College football has been a sport in American society for decades. Yet the players playing the sport are not receiving their fair cut of the prize. It has been debated whether or not college football players should get paid for playing. The supporters say that the players are not being compensated fairly and the non-supporters say that the education the players receive is payment enough. They also say that the universities the players attend are providing them with the basic necessities so they should not get paid. College football players should be paid though because they put their bodies at risk, make a lot of money for their school, and the play to entertain audiences.
Americans believe that athletes, celebrities, and CEOs are the highest paid jobs in America. This belief is true however the average income of these three jobs is nowhere near what the perception is. Athletes are the most confusing when it comes to pay since people do not factor in that an average professional is only 4.85 years, NFL is 3.5 years, MLB is 5.6 years, NBA is 4.8, and NHL is 5.5 years, (RSVLTS, 2013) United States Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that an average income for “athletes and sport competitors” was only $47,710 (BLS, 2017). People believe that athletes are only the stars you see on television, but this is not the case. Athletes are risking their health for that paycheck. They spend a majority of their lives in the gym or on
Do athletes get overpaid? Is it fair that the average NFL player gets paid 1.9 million dollars a year while the average heart surgeon gets paid 533 thousand dollars annually? I think that professional athletes don’t get paid too much. There are multiple reasons that proves that their pay is not excessive. Their careers are short, they risk their body for our entertainment, and they motivate children.
Horace Mitchell discusses this topic in his article, on usnews.com. In the article Horace’s main point is that college athletes are not professional, therefor they should not get paid. He also brings up the fact that most college athletes pay less for college because of their athletic scholarships. Which they are only able to obtain because they play a sport, and normal students do not have access to these benefits. Yes, regular students have academic scholarships, student athletes can get both, academic and sport scholarships. I think that because
Should soldiers or athletes get paid more money? I say the soldiers should get paid more because they protect our country and plus too soldiers represent the United States. Athletes get paid more in a day than a soldier gets a year. The average salary the soldiers get in a year is 99,000. Soldiers don’t get that much like they should get. That's why they need to be paid more money.
Athletes are being paid hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars to entertain us. They work less hours than the average person and make considerably more. Athletes all around the world are paid handsomely because they are talented and have extensive knowledge of their sport. But, is that knowledge and talent really worth what they are earning every season? Compared to some of the most common and needed professions are athletes really earning their paychecks? It’s time to take a deep look into what requirements besides natural ability athletes really need? How many hours are they expected to put in a week and what their job really is.
The NCAA should continue to not pay college athletes because of the many complications that would go along with giving every player pay for play. According to Mark Guarino in his article “NCAA and college sports: Is it time to pay athletes to play?”, Kain Colter, the former Northwestern quarterback says that he spent 60 hours a week on football-related activities during the summer and 40 to 50 hours a week during the season, all while trying to manage school work, and says that “We’re brought to the university to play football.” This being said, the students take football very seriously, more serious than their schoolwork. They treat football as if it is their job but they are working for
Should college athletes be paid? That’s the million dollar question. Throughout the past decade more and more people are complaining about college athletes not getting paid. This has become a major issue in the NCAA and around the country. Now, because of all the complaining, college athletes are close to getting paid. This has been debated and fought over through recent years. The NCAA president doesn’t like the idea of this either. Taking away athletes' amateur status would be the "end of college sports as we know it," says NCAA president Mark Emmert. College athletes should be grateful for the ability to play college sports, instead of worrying about money. Many people have different opinions about the issue and recently, it has been proposed
Compensating College Athletes Often college athletes get hurt and miss classes. Shouldn’t athletes be compensated for all that is endured? Athletes work hard out on that field and usually get hurt for more than forty hours a week for an entire season. This is why college athletes should be paid.
One major topic of controversy in today’s society is whether or not the NCAA should allow college athletes to get paid. As of right now, the closest thing to payment athletes can receive for playing sports is an athletic scholarship. Although some people believe that an athletic scholarship is enough compensation for college athletes, the NCAA should start allowing colleges to pay athletes for playing sports at their school because it would help control the salaries of college coaches, athletics are a major source of revenue for schools, and it could help keep athletes on the right track.
In closing, these athletes are making too much money in a society that traditionally bases salaries on the value of ones work. These athletes do not know what real work is or how hard it is to make a dollar. Although their job is difficult, they do not play a role in our economy like their salaries indicate. Therefore, they should receive less money.
The salary of professional athletes are always being debated on whether they make too much or it 's the right amount they should make. Some of the athletes do make millions and millions of dollars, but there is some that don 't. Anyways in order to make the millions first an athletes must make it to the professional level. For example in soccer only 1.4% of people actually make it to the professional level. So the rest of the people make it for other sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and others. To be considered a professional athlete you must be getting payed to play a sport. They will be playing for a league and even tournaments and get rewarded with more money if they win. Some may think an athlete
In today’s society many will argue whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. In the present time athletes are being paid phenomenally large amounts of money for their entertainment. It is my claim that all professional athletes are overpaid because they do not offer society an essential function that improves or enhances our world in comparison to other professionals such as medical doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Society does not value entertainment enough to warrant such high salaries such as those of many professional athletes. There is no reason that these athletes should demand these tremendous amounts of money. This is why you have to put into question their reasoning for demanding such high salaries.
...r salaries are too high to compare. They do entertain the public, but the expense for the entertainment is too steep. Athletes should make a decent salary, but they should have control over their limits. They deserve a salary that would compare to other officials who are more important to the people and that have a role which effects the people as a whole. Something must be done before a drastic change occurs.
