What is power? Power can be classified as many things. For instance, being able to manipulate people with your speaking ability is a type of power. In this world, there are very few that are born with these powers. Power is a necessary component in any society, otherwise, all pandemonium would break loose; leaders must be established. But, when taken to an extreme, power is not good, and pandemonium will break loose. Although some may believe that individuals should use power as a mean to get what they want, they should use it humbly for the greater good because it can help change others’ lives, God will give you rewards for the good deeds, and if it’s not used right then it can harm others. For instance, a police officer has a lot of power. He has gun power to control crime. But he can decide to use his power to help the needy or use it as a scapegoat to get rich. In other words, police officers can use their power to keep the society safe, which they should do or be a corrupted officer and make money. There are numerous reasons why the police should use their power to help others. Such as, before a person a cop, he would have to take an oath to obey the law and help protect the people with their power. In a time like 2017, every step we make is covered by the media. Therefore, when a police officer uses his power to save some people from some dangerous mafias. Then they will receive the reward from God for their good deeds. Additionally, when the media disseminates this news, the officers can gain reputation in the society as well. However, if he decides to use his power to make money, then he can be a corrupt officer and make people’s crime go away by paying money. This would allow him to become rich. In contrast, this would also cause the rise of numerous other problems that may harm people. The wrong use of power is also shown in the tempest by Shakespeare. in the tempest, the author shows a polar opposite use of power. Where the individual uses his power to get revenge. This is shown when the author Hast thou, spirit, Performed to point the tempest that I bade thee?; I boarded the king’s ship. Now on the beak, Now in the waist, the deck, in every cabin, I flamed amazement. Sometime I’d divide, And burn in many places…”(Act 1, scene 2, lines 194- 200). This shows that Prospero was commanding his spirit, Ariel to do certain tasks. Where he used his abilities to harm the people on the ship. However, abusing power is just wrong. These wrong use of power can hurt people and power is not meant to be used for hurting
In society we will always faces ethical and unethical choices. There are time when we cannot always chose the ethical approach. Other decisions primarily only affect us as individuals. However, when you are in the public eye such as police officer your decisions affect others. In this paper the discussion will be based on the Kansas City case study.
Crank & Caldero (2004) discuss the notion of the noble cause that is widely used by police officers to justify their actions. Police officers feel that there are many obstacles that prevent them to do their job efficiently. They claim that courts only hinder the process of putting criminals behind bars. They also believe that they are true patriots with a noble cause of getting rid of bad guys. To further prove their point Crank & Caldero (2004) use works of many authors, who wrote about police ethics and corruption and about how the noble cause is interpreted by police officers. Each of the authors discusses a dilemma with which polices officers have to deal when deciding what action they need to take in order to deal with criminals. Cumulatively, it seems that police conduct themselves towards criminals and citizens with hostility and with actions that maybe constituted as unlawful and corruptive in nature. But to the police officers, who are seeking justice and are driven by a noble cause, all means are good to get the bad guys. There is also a philosophical twist that puts a poli...
Power. It is defined as the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Throughout time, certain individuals have acquired power in their society as a way to govern and keep order among their community. Power is not a new concept; it was used in the past by many emperors, kings, and queens, and is still being used by presidents, prime ministers, and dictators. Although, it has been used to further progress societies into what the world is like today, not all power has been used for the best of mankind. But what goes awry to make power turn corrupt? In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is illustrated how power can turn corrupt, when authoritative figures, who possess power, abuse it for their personal gain, rather than for the common good of the society.
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.

Power is both a good and evil thing. With power, a person has the potential to change the world. With power, a person’s words would be so influential, that anything would be possible. But when a person uses power for evil, it could possibly provoke the most horrible events imaginable. One person who used power for evil was a character from the movie Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith created by George Lucas. The characters name was Chancellor Palpatine. In a span of about fifteen years, he was able to manipulate the political system of the Galactic Republic so that he would come to power. With various events such as the Clone Wars, he gained more and more power as Chancellor, so much so that the only thing that the Chancellor feared was to lose his power.
Power leading to corruption is more of a fact than an idea, in most cases when all is said and done the one with the power isn't who they said they'd be. Macbeth was once a Scottish nobleman whose greed for power became to overwhelming leading to his own demise. Shakespeare begins Macbeth, with the appearances of three witches. Each witch exclaims that Macbeth will be the thane of Glamis, the thane of Cawdor and afterwards he'll b...
Power allows people to do anything they want. They can use it in different ways, they can tell people to obey them, they can use it to hurt someone they hate, and even rob. They can also use it in a positive way, they can help people and do a lot of good things with it.
Power is a difficult concept to define conclusively or definitively however, Bourdieu explains power to be a symbolic construct that is perpetuated through every day actions and behaviours of a society, that manipulate power relations to create, maintain and force the conforming of peoples to the given habitus of that society (Bourdieu, 1977). Power, is a force created through the
All people have power, some people are just more powerful than others. Having power is the ability to create change. Examples of power being used wrongly is during the French revolution, and the residential school crisis. During the French revolution, two examples were shown of people abusing their power. King Louie XVI raised taxes so that he could buy things that he and his wife Marie Antoinette wanted, and took away rights from the third estate. In the residential schools crisis, the teachers, priests and nuns had power over the students and abused the students in different ways. Superior people take away the rights from those who are below them, but they end up corrupt.
Abuse of power and discrimination are bound to happen when people are given the position of authority over others. This happens in businesses, households, and in the police force. The corruption and abuse of policing is a serious problem facing many people living in the world today. But in countries that are less developed there is an abundance of power abuse and corruption especially over the poor and marginalized who fall within the lowest quintile of income (Agbiboa). Seeing that this happens in other countries looks horrible but that is because the corruption is easier to see in the underdeveloped countries, but the fact that it happens in other places means that
The Tempest is believed to be the last play William Shakespeare ever wrote. As a result, many of the play's undertones act as a farewell to the stage. Within the play, there are multiple uses of imagery, symbolism and allusions, intended to accurately convey the message. Shakespeare uses aspects of the psychoanalytic theory in order to display the various forms of the human condition.
The term power has a variety of definitions. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the first definition of power refers to “the ability or capacity to act or do something effectively”, also include “a capacity, faculty, or aptitude,” (“power. (n.d.)
Shakespeare immediately throws the audience into a court that is not unified and strictly divided by political strife, as were the courts of his day. In The Tempest, the court is in a sense of disorder from the beginning with the shipwreck and its tumultuous and frightening sounds and images. The courtly conventions of politics and class are in great conflict, and the entire court is forced away through reality or magic from courtly order to the enchanted island, in which the characters function under a different order where idealism is a reality. For these characters, the island represents an escape from the political and material concerns of the mainland, allowing for a period of internal meditation aside from the roles that are prescribed to them in the royal household.
Power is the ability to make people say and/or do things. It is the ability to get whatever you want. Power is necessary in any society, otherwise all would break loose; leaders must be established. When taken to an extreme, power is not good. As Lord Acton said, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." An example of this is Adolph Hitler from Germany. He thought that he could not be stopped and that rules did not apply to him. By being given absolute power, he altered the government. No one attempted to stop this in the German country, because of his con...
