To Own or Not to Own-That is the Question Do you think that people should be allowed to own guns? This debate has raged on in our nation for decades. In 1791, our founding fathers adopted the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. The amendment is part of the United States Bill of Rights and it states; “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” More recently in 2008 and 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment “protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm, unconnected to service in a militia and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.” I believe that people should continue to be allowed to lawfully own guns for a number of reasons. …show more content…

If someone were to break into our home, then we should be able to protect our family and possessions from harm and theft. Some people argue that it is dangerous to possess firearms in the home, especially around children. First of all, guns and all other dangerous items, such as poisons and medications, should be kept out of the reach of children. Second, children should be taught safety precautions regarding all of these dangerous items from a young age. My siblings and I have grown up in a house with guns and we know not to handle them without adult supervision. I feel safer knowing that my parents can protect me, my family, and our home because they own
