Should the minimum wage be increased? Recently, many people have been arguing if the minimum wage should be increased and the repercussions in raising the minimum wage. The reasons we have a minimum wage is to protect workers from being given an unfair amount of money for the work they do and to protect them from poverty. Throughout the years, the minimum wage increased many times. The minimum wage was increased to help keep up with inflation in the past. Some economists argue that when the government raised the minimum wage, it had negative effects on the economy. Others argued differently by telling people that more people got jobs rather than lost their job. Raising the minimum wage can make finding jobs harder for people, people can loose their jobs when employers cannot afford to keep them and the unemployment rate will increase for people without a higher education after high school. When the minimum wage increases, employers may be reluctant in hiring more people since the new employees will be making more money. Some employers will have to cut hours, so people can still have a job. This will cause people to make less money than they already do. People’s bills will increase, and the cost of paying someone like a plumber to stop by and fix a pipe will increase dramatically. Since more money is available to the public for spending, the more business owners are going to want to increase their prices. The government would tax people more. The minimum wage increase could bump people up into another tax bracket if they are using the minimum wage job as a second job, so every paycheck would be less since the government will collect more tax money and people would have to pay more for goods and
