Since its inception, the minimum wage has been a hotbed for debate. If today’s leaders could manage to increase minimum wage, millions of families would benefit. A person working at minimum wage will only make about $10,700 a year. When rent, groceries, bills and gas are all added up, it appears to be a nearly impossible task to keep a family afloat. But working 40 hours a week at $5.15 an hour, one makes less than $206 a week after taxes. Making $206/week, one brings home about $824/month. Adding 17 gallons of gas at $2.20 a gallon in a car; the cost ends up to be about $38 a week, $152/month. The gas and electricity bill about $120, $50 for cable, $147 for property taxes, $45 for the telephone bill, $25 for water, and $42 for house insurance. All this totals about $580 (Abrams, H). Making it difficult to afford cable, and make the smallest payment possible on all the bills causing one to slip into debt. This is reality for many of the people in the United States. At the current minimum wage level, a full time, year round minimum wage worker in 2005 will earn $5,378 less than the $16,090 needed to lift a family of three out of poverty (Minimum). Today the federal minimum wage is $5.15, but should be about $8.50 if Congress had adjusted it for inflation over the past 35 years. While $5.15 may not seen that bad, when factoring in such variables as sky rocketing gas prices, budgets can get pretty tight. David Shepard, a sophomore at Wayne State University, worked at a Meijer Retail and Grocery Superstore for over two years while in high school. At the time Shepard lived with his parents and didn’t have to worry about paying rent or buying groceries, all that he had to pay for was filling up his gas tank and paying for his car insurance. Shepard recalled, “It was all I could do to pay for the basics like gas and bill’s, I barely had any money to have fun on the weekends”. This is only an example of a high school student that can nearly slip by on minimum wage with only a few expenses. There are 1.8 million people in America with children under the age of 18 that would benefit from an increase in minimum wage (Minimum).
Imagine a world where you are working overtime, seven days a week, yet your kids are starving. You can’t get the education you need because you don’t have the time and money to afford it, and you can’t change jobs because this is the only one you can get. Unfortunately, this is the reality for millions of Americans living today. The federal minimum wage is too low to help families, and actually mathematically speaking, too low to survive on. The quality of life for minimum wage families is terribly low, and that is unacceptable. As humans, we should be looking after others and helping the poverty come out of their continuous cycle. Raising the minimum wage would not only help families be able to afford a better quality of life, but help them to afford healthy food, get an adequate education, and invest in the necessary health care they need.
The United States minimum wage is not indexed to inflation. Due to this fact, the purchasing power of minimum wage falls as the price of consumer goods increases. This paper will examine the cultural context of employment for white, middle-class, American women from the early 1920’s to present. Exploring the progression and integration of women into the workforce, detailing the forces and influences for change and examining critical court rulings, this paper will offer a perspective of the imeragey taken from the author.
Gender roles in toys are overwhelmingly obvious. The breakdown has not changed in so many years that we all comply with and follow without question. Taking a trip to the local Toys R Us store showed me just how obvious the line was drawn for the sexes, showing a specific division of the two. The stores layout clearly establishes the line between girl’s toys and boys toys. There are very few isles that will intermingle within the sexes. For this project I selected the following age groups; infant, preschool and school age with a focus on girls toys.

Massachusetts increased the minimum wage from $8 to $9 at the start of 2015 and to $10 on the first day of 2016. Minimum wage is the assured lowest amount of pay per hour that an employee can receive and it’s purpose is to make certain that employers are paying their workers fairly. The first minimum wage was created by Congress in 1938 as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act; it was twenty-five cents an hour. Since then, it has varied over the years, the highest being in 1968, but today it stands at $7.25 (Sherk). At the moment, Congress is contemplating the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013, which would, over two years, raise the minimum wage to $10.10 (GovTrack). However, raising the minimum wage is a bad idea because a majority of minimum wage jobs belong to teenagers who will not stay in the job very long and do not need to support a family, raising minimum wage will lessen the availability of jobs for the poor, and it is pointless since many of the impoverished that the raising of the minimum wage is targeted to help, will not be able to benefit.
Minimum wage is a difficult number to decide on because it affects different income earning citizens in different ways. According to Principles of Microeconomics, by N. Gregory Mankiw, minimum wage is a law that establishes the lowest price for labor that and employer may pay (Mankiw 6-1b). Currently, the minimum wage in the United States is $7.25 per hour. For many years politicians and citizens have argued on what should be the minimum wage that would benefit the economy and society in general. Walking into almost any store that sells toys shows quite clearly that there is a difference between toys for girls and boys. While some stores, such as Target, have attempted to at least partially address the issue by trying to remove labels such as “girl” and “boy” from their toy sections, it was met with a significant amount of backlash from the public showing just how much farther we still have to go on such issues (Luckerson). Furthermore, despite such attempts to move forward, girls are still actively encouraged to maintain the housewife stereotype through toys such as the It’s Girl Stuff! Cleaning Set containing a toy dust pan and brush, broom, and cleaning spray that was manufactured and sold as recently as 2014 (A Cleaning Set). Even worse, the sexualization of and enforcement of beauty standards for females as a whole, and especially for young girls, has arguably become more rampant in recent years. Makeup, skincare, and weight loss companies have been targeting girls through marketing at progressively younger ages (Cardona). Teen magazines further enforce the unrealistically high beauty standards for women with articles such as one that presents Hollywood celebrities Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Salma Hayek, and Heather Graham as “role models against which readers can calibrate their own behavior” (Gibbons). Children are gullible not only to commercials but to their parents, as they are instructed from the beginning of their lives to believe every word their mother and father say. It is reasonable, then, to link gender roles more closely with parental teachings than the bright pinks and blues of television advertisements and plastic toys. While gendered toys and television commercials may influence children’s adherence to gender roles, it is up to their parents to control whether or not their child follows or rejects the stereotypes. As written by Maria Guido (2014), “The truth is, our children are more attentive to us – their parents – than their toys” (para. 6). Most children will not care whether or not their toy is ‘for boys’ or ‘for girls’ unless a parent has forbidden them from playing with it. Parents have a strong hand in the game of gender roles; they can push their children to adhere to them or allow their children to behave how they wish. With each generation, fewer parents play the stereotype card; they allow their children to adapt traits without pressuring them to conform to a certain predetermined role. There are, of course, still parents who force their children to adhere to strict gender roles. However, with each generation, the number of such parents decreases. Raising the minimum will end up hurting Americans more than helping them. The people that are for raising minimum wage are people who believe that increasing minimum wage can help those people who are unskilled and need an income they can live on. Yet, raising minimum wage would do the opposite and make employers have to fire people who earn minimum wage, because they can't afford the higher wages. People need to realize that increasing the minimum wage would hurt people more than help them. In the end increasing minimum wage would result in some people being let go, for the reason, businesses can't afford paying them minimum wage anymore.

As a child, our toys were not exactly as gender neutral as earlier times, but also were not as gender stereotypic as the toys in today’s time. The fact that everyone eventually comes into contact with buying toys whether you have kids or you have a friend or family member who have kids which makes this an important topic. Eventually, everyone has to buy a child a present. Would it bother you that all toys are either pink or blue and there is no in between? Or does sticking to what your child is already familiar with and knows the more ideal option when it comes to gender stereotyping with children’s toys? Authors James Delingpole and Eleanor Muffitt both do a good job at arguing both sides to this issue. Although both authors provide valid points throughout each article, about gender stereotyping with toys, James Delingpole clearly was more effective in persuading the audience because he used all three elements; ethos, logos, and pathos to support his idea.
On an average, a worker must make $18.92 per hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment in most places in the United States today (Network, Jolie Lee/USA Today). Additionally, most of the workers have to balance multiple job schedules, travel, and struggle to keep up their life going. When I was a little girl, the majority of the toys I played with were dolls and Barbies, but imagine if girls were exposed to a larger assortment of toys at a young age. How would our view on gender stereotypes be different? GoldieBlox published a video in November of 2014 that advertises their children’s toy while fighting stereotypes. GoldieBlox’s purpose is to persuade people to purchase their toy. In addition, this company is motivated to inform girls that they don’t have to act on cliché gender stereotypes.
One thing we know all kids love to check out in the stores is the toy isles’. They can spend what seems like an eternity checking out, observing and picking out all types of toys. Girls usually flock to the Barbie dolls, princess castles, and baby dolls, while boys go straight for things such as action figures, toy guns, and trucks. But then again, would you view it absurd if a boy were to pick up a Barbie doll or a girl would rather play with a truck instead? Thinking as such is the effect gender stereotyping roles have on an individual and the outlook on children’s toys. This can be prompted by, display of toys based on gender, toys aisle location, and company stores.
