Bump! Bump! Bump! Whoa,and my papers go flying everywhere. Should middle school students be able to carry their backpacks? Well, I think so. Students can carry their backpacks so they don’t drop their books and papers. Another reason is kids won’t be late. Why someone would disagree with me is because the bookbag might take too much room in the classroom. First of all, carrying around our book bags is a good thing because kids won’t drop the heavy school books and papers. Asking some kids if we should or should not carry our book bags, I only had one no from the 5 people, that is surprising to me. One of the yes’ came from Sadie J. her reasoning was “It is easier to carry things and you won’t be late for class.” The one no was from Eli R. his reasoning was good, he said “carrying the heavy books on our backs could damage our backs.”This is coming from me, but instead of carrying 5 or more things and dropping it. Having the books not in your arms, but if you have a book bag kids in middle school won’t drop any of the school books. If you do bump into someone and drop everything middle school students will have to pick it up and stop people from moving along. Most middle students go to their locker before class, and that makes them late, but if they carry their backpacks they will be on time. The rules of a classroom are to be prepared, but kids always forget their pencil in their book bag. So having their bookbag would give the kids an advantage so they are prepared and don’t have to go to their locker just for a pencil. Even this will help them from being late because most teachers mark if the kids were late and after so many lates kids will get a detention. Seely Flint (2014) emphasise that there should be a core collection of books that stay the same all year round for students to familiarise themselves with a revolving collection that is changed on a weekly basis, reflecting student 's interests. While Fountas and Pinnell (2006) stress that there should be selections of books available for students to read at, above or below grade level and it’s essential to include enough books that students can read with ease independently. I found that Contact time and organisation should teach students “how to think about books”, organising by theme, author or series will help in this type of thinking as student search for their books and put books back into their correct spots (Fountas & Pinnell 2001). Having an organised classroom library has been found to not only improve students reading ability but also encourages students to pick up a book and read. In relation to the importance of classroom libraries, I found that having a classroom library as a resource in literacy encourages students to read independently and exposes students to different types of books and genres. Classroom libraries act as a ‘gathering spot’ for students to express their lives as readers and that we recognise how important it is for students to read, collaborate in their reading with others and to have opportunities to read a variety of texts independently (Reutzel and Fawson 2002). I found that the classroom library is the best way to do this and the best way to make sure that books are easily accessible and in the face of students. Classrooms today are much different than classrooms 50 years ago. Classes today are much more technology oriented than they were in the past. High schools are now loaning students their own personal chromebook to carry till the end of the year. High school students should be required to carry chromebooks.
