Hello, I’m Mimi Sharon and I believe that higher level math should be taught in middle schools due to its positive in-school effects. First of all, the main importance of teaching this subject is to introduce students to these advanced topics and give them a chance to excel in them. After all, if schools never teach the subjects early on, how are kids supposed to know if they like the subject or are good at it when they sign up for high school and college courses? Along with simply knowing if they are good at the course, learning higher maths early on allows students more freedom in high school and college if they finish the required math courses early. Even while still in middle school, many students are ahead of their class and find themselves stuck relearning material. With the introduction of a more advanced math class, these students could work to their full potential.

Even students who major in not math oriented subjects have a visible advantage if they take higher level maths. I was never one to be inclined towards math or science. I always felt that English and writing were more my speed, and in turn I enjoyed them more. From Susan Jacoby’s point of view as shown in her essay “When Bright Girls Decide That Math is a Waste of Time,” this would not have been a good enough reason for me to stop taking those subjects in my later years of high school. However, I disagree. I think learning, especially as you get older and closer to college-age, should be about the subjects that allow you to thrive and discover yourself, not about those that you struggle with and cause you stress.
Throughout elementary and middle school, I was usually placed in upper level reading and writing classes and lower level math classes. I never really thought very much about why that might be. I assumed I was naturally good at language arts so I excelled in it, and I assumed that my brain wasn’t mathematically inclined so I just didn’t do as well in that area. However, after revisiting my past experiences with math and my previous approaches to learning, I’ve come to the conclusion that after coming in contact with any sort of roadblock or failure, I gave up. Now I consider myself a believer in the incremental model of intelligence, because it’s been my experience that when I believe that I have room to grow I work harder and I improve. Yes, I still believe that to a degree some people are more inclined to do better at math than others, but succeeding in any subject takes hard work in and out of the classroom, not just natural
All throughout the days I spent in school sitting in math class learning Algebra, Geometry, and the various other math courses I pondered whether or not I would ever even use these math skills in my life. The sad truth is that you will mostly likely use most of the math skills that you learned throughout high school in everyday life. There are honestly so many different ways you will use math in life like buying a car, your weekly trip to the grocery store, and even at home. It is honestly hurting you to not pay attention because you will in fact use math in your everyday life.
Common core is not a new method. America has set standards since at least the 1950’s and many schools have since then implemented a curriculum supporting this ideal. They can say that in their math classes the knowledge they already obtain does not affect them when trying to learn new topics. Math is a language, therefore all of the answers cannot be varied.
