Should the Government Allow Immigrants Who are Here Illegally to Become U.S. Citizens? Imagine you live in an area where illegal immigrants pass through into the United States frequently. You worry, day after day, that these illegal aliens will vandalize your property, murder your two beloved dogs, or hurt or kidnap your children. Then, one day, the U.S. allows these criminals the ability to become a citizen, and about a week later, one of the immigrants that you greatly feared, moves into the house next door. This issue is whether or not the government should allow illegal immigrants the ability to become a U.S. citizen. To be an illegal immigrant means that a person is from a different country and they are sneaking into another country (in this case, the U.S.) without officially crossing the border and showing the security the personal information they need to cross into the country. “Each year about 400,000 new illegal immigrants sneak across our borders and settle permanently in the country.” (D’Agostino). This shows that our border security is not as safe and secure as our country previously thought, if so many immigrants are sneaking past our borders. The illegal immigrants are also harming our culture, economy, and our sovereignty. The U.S. is losing control over who passes into the country. Who knows who is illegally crossing our borders? With so many illegal aliens sneaking into the United States, our country is not as safe anymore. The U.S. already has a fairly large population, adding more unregistered illegal immigrants into our country is not going to help with safety, especially if they are given legal status (citizenship).
