After reading both articles discussing about the ways companies would like to deal with employees answering emails or checking messages after their working hours, I have come to the conclusion that in the ideal world, I would agree that employees should be let alone their time off in order to recharge their energy before they come back to work on the next day. There are 2 reasons why I choose to agree with the ideas; mental issue to low performance and respect of each other.
It is critical that the companies would like to have employees who can work up to their standard and give good performance. Thus, as it is mentioned in the article that if employees are influenced too much by the technology or have to deal with work all the time, in the long run, they will burn out. From my perspective and experience, too much stress from work can be one of the reasons why a lot of people leave their jobs. I found that the real reason behind it is because when people have too much to take on even after work, they cannot enjoy their life or have time to do other things that can relieve their stress. When they come to work, they cannot perform well because of the lack of energy mentally and physically. Employees will then feel bad for themselves for not being able to achieve their goals at work or finish the tasks given well. Eventually, they will need to look for a new job that can give them some time to live their lives too.
In addition, I think that the companies should respect the time they require each employee to work. Most of the companies set up specific hours required for employees to be on their duties and expect them to dedicate time and effort to the growth of the companies while at work. I would like to suggest that the employees should check their emails and messages maybe once or twice a day during their long holidays. This is a part of the job that they should take responsibility to complete it. However, they can answer only those messages that are in urgent. The rest that can wait just wait just like Lucy, the editor of Financial times mentioned. At the same time, the companies should come up with the regulations or code of conduct of how employees should be contacted after work or on holidays, and make sure that only things that matter and cannot wait will be delivered to the employees because it’s a real urgent issue.
This way, both sides can meet in the middle and be happy to achieve their goals.

At some point, the more time one spends working, the less productive they become, as Delistraty states. Delistraty tells us that the French are required to take at least 30 days off each year. This should not just be mandatory for French workers, but for every full-time worker. Too many people in our culture overwork causing them to miss out on important milestones in their loved ones’ lives. Working over 50 hours a week not only stresses one’s body but also limits time spent with friends and family, which is one of my top priorities. Delistraty mentions Menlo Innovations and how they see people who work overtime as “inefficient workers, not dedicated.” I think that every company should view overtime this way, they recognize that overwork is inefficient. If companies have this mentality it might help people to focus more on themselves and not neglect their physical and psychological health and lead them to more efficient work. The motivation for employees to work hard, and overwork, is to allow themselves a comfortable retirement as Delistraty states. By overworking, people tend to miss out on milestones and important events, in their lives and family. As Delistraty tells us, people “are too busy fitting their lives into work, rather than fitting work into their lives”

According to the Holmes-Rahe Life Events Scale, which rates levels of stress, many of the most stressful events in life are related to the workplace. Some examples are firings, business readjustments and changes in financial status, altered responsibilities, a switch to a different line of work, trouble with the boss, changes in work hours or conditions, retirement and vacations. Workplace stress costs American employers an estimated $200 billion per year in lower productivity, absenteeism, staff turnover, workers' compensation, medical insurance and other stress-related expenses. However, stress may not always be a bad thing. It can stimulate creativity and productivity. The natural pattern of human behavior is to experience a stress-causing event or situation, react to it with increased tension and then return to a normal, relaxed state. The problem occurs when stress is so overwhelming or constant that this pattern is broken. This overwhelming feeling is usually caused by some lack of communication.
Despite the fact that people have common goals, more often than not, we see them grouped into contentious factions, fighting tooth and nail to promote differing government policies in the name of achieving those commonly held goals. Often the policies may be unproductive and often have the unintended consequence of sabotaging the goal. Almost always the conflict is centered around the means to achieve goals rather than the goals themselves.
Working in today’s society has changed in the last few decades. The economy and technology are the main reasons for this change. The type of job and environment where one works has also changed. The fact that many people work from home via the internet has drastically changed the workforce and the environment surrounding it. With this change have come new demands, expectations, and opportunities for employers. Everyone deals with these demands differently, affecting the employee’s quality of life and job satisfaction. Though the job and office types and locations have changed over the years the need for job satisfaction has not. In today’s economy the job is not as stable as it used to be. One must be prepared for changes in the future.
If the health of employees can help or hinder a company, then why do companies still have sick days? With the “on the go” lifestyles, how can we not question the health of employees and their families. Today we have high stress jobs, rush hour traffic, and demanding schedules. Being healthy and fit is the way to conquer tomorrow.
Paid sick leave is an entitlement for employees within any organisation, it is meant to be used for when an employee is sick or has family obligations, such as caring for sick loved ones. As in the article ‘Anger at plan to cut medic’s sick leave’ unlike annual leave sick leave cannot be accumulated and employees cannot obtain compensation for sick leave not taken (2004). Paid sick leave is necessary for employees as the entitlement gives them the option for when they cannot attend work due to an illness, sick leave also helps the organisation, as employees with sick leave are able to work reliably and efficiently, and by allowing a sick employee off for a single day can prevent the whole organisation from catching the sickness and reducing productivity. However sick leave schemes are open to abuse, it requires strong administration and planning from the organisation’s human resources department as well as the employer. Researching and planning a sick leave policy plan in which benefits both the employee and employer would help reduce the problem of sick leave abuse while keeping the entitlement available. This paper will discuss what sick leave is, why and how it is abused, why it is a problem for organisations and what type of plans can be used to minimise the abuse of sick leave within an organisation.
People while at work are often under psychological pressure. In the "risk group" fall supervisors and managers, people who work with clients, secretaries, salesmen, teachers and indeed, almost any job - the source of stress. Often overlooked is the impact telecommuting has on the environment. One great advantage for the environment is the conservation of energy. When burnout does occurs not only does the employees suffer but so do others around them. Customers receive poor service, relationships with coworkers suffer, and job involvement decreases to the extent that complaints may be made.
Since people are always dealing with certain changes in their lives, they are always dealing with some type of stress. One of the biggest growing issues with stress is stress in the workplace.
