Community College Should Be Paid For In the article “As He Promotes it, Some Question Obama’s Free Community College Idea” written by Joanne Jacobs on Feb 23,2015 goes in detail on Obama’s plan about community college being free and the pros and con , and what people think about it. Many of the people who think it's a bad idea are low income students' attending community college and then the people who agree with this plan are people who are most likely middle class because they're either professors and scholars who attend Stanford or Harvard. In this situation, I think it better to go with the people who are attending community and know how the whole business is of attending it and stick on their side not on a side where people who are attending already …show more content…
Siquerios said “ make the problem worse by drawing more students to already crowded community college campuses” which is true that most community colleges are small and if they were to be free most who will be attending public or private universities would rather go to community to do there GE’s for free then just go after to receiving their bachelors which might sound wonderful but it would m,are the campus more crowded and be less people trying to take the class they have to take because it would be full quickly. The other thing she said was “ middle- and upper-middle-class students could be competing for spots with low income students” which means that the people they're trying to get to attend community won't be because the class above them will be attending even more because of one it free and most likely were going to attend already which is not want they want because they want low income to be able to attend
people agree with the state that Liz borrows from Thomas Jefferson, "Everybody should have an education proportional to their life,"(Addison 256). Unfortunately, the average income between rich and poor in America is not accurate, everyone supposed to become somebody in life; college gives opportunity to everyone who wants to do so, to become whatever they want, and at any age with a low cost. as much as the income level between rich and poor in America stays unbalanced; college will always be there to gives opportunity to people who want to learn, but cannot afford to attend university. Liz Addison points out an example in the article. It describes “a college application essay workshop for low-income students” (Addison 256). This is suitable for low-income students, but it doesn’t mention an education at universities. People who go to community college have a lot trouble to find jobs which can allow them to pay their debt after graduate. However, in university you are more likely to find and job and be able to pay your
Obamas proposal will affect the Yakima Valley especially. In Rafael Guerrero’s article he speaks to the President of Yakima Valley Community College, Linda Kaminski, about Obama’s proposal that the first two years of community college would be free. She agrees that this would be a good idea, she states, “. . . middle-income students are often ineligible, forcing them to work to pay tuition. . . Obama’s proposal would alleviate the stress placed on these students trying to get a college education.” In making this comment she believes that if a students get financially support it can benefit them in class room by having all their attention on their class work and not having to worry about a job that would usually help pay for the classes. With having the first two years free this would give people hope and encouragement to continue their education. Kaminski aggress when she said, “High school students might be more motivated, too . . . For whatever reason students may not want to go to college — lack of resources, family issues, work — the measure would reduce the reasons not to focus, study and complete high school at their highest potential.” In other words she believes that no one’s potential should be held off for financial reasons. With the proposal if passed it will give students motivation to continue their education and there
It 's our job as citizens to put our intellectual weight into what we care about and what we don 't then look critically at all the available angles. Free community college as proposed by President Obama is a large topic because it will effect the nations communities in a big way. Though no plan is without opposition and outside ideas making community college free will help are nations students get the education they deserve. With more informed communities we can then employ new workers into technical careers that benefit the worker and employers. Being able to make steps towards a higher education without the burden of finances is a great opportunity and one that shouldn 't be dismissed casually.
According to Trade Schools, Colleges and Universities “Many of America's top-performing high school students never apply to the most challenging colleges and universities even though they have the ability to succeed at them. They often come from minority and low-income households and end up pursuing more affordable, less-selective schools instead.” College can be a burden to many students in a variety of different ways, but the most common reason is due to funds. Making college free for students will help this problem by increasing jobs in the work industry that require degrees, they should be affordable to all people at all cost, as well as the funds should be completely cut off because it would increase jobs and help America's economy grow.
"Parents with incomes below $40,000 were much more likely to say they couldn 't afford college compared to those with higher incomes. The unsettling aspect of this poll is that in all likelihood, these parents ' perceptions mirror reality," says Tamara Draut, author of "Strapped”. She talks about how most middle class families can 't afford to put their children into college. The highest education they can get is a high school diploma, which we all know in this modern world it cant get you a lucrative job to maintain your whole life. Most American don 't get the chance to develop their full capabilities through higher schooling due to lack of resources like funds to enable them see their full potential. People will say that education is meant for people who can afford to go. And already the government has made schooling from pre-k to high school free for all public school, so making community colleges free will cost the state about 60 billion dollars as said by the white house spokesman Eric Schultz . Education must not be limited to only privilege people,it should be universal for anybody willing to educate themselves to make their life better and help grow Americas economy reducing
Juan Salgado, in his recent article “When Community College Is Free”, published in The New York Times, in September 19, 2017, argues if free community college works or not. Salgado presents an experiment that happened in chicago about two years ago. The program was called the Star Scholarship. Where Chicago began to offer free community college to all public high school graduates. He shows how the early results of the initiative have been “incredibly encouraging.” Juan also presents it through a student's point of view.
“Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in.” ("Isaac Asimov." Goodreads. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 May 2016.) This quote by Isaac Asimov perfectly states how I personally feel about assumptions. In any event, it is good to have an open mind, especially when it comes to people's personal experiences and struggles. It is better to be a thoughtful person rather than assuming things about people that may not be true. That being said, Assumptions about community college students are unfair and incorrect. Misled people say that community college students are unable to attend a four-year university. As well as a degree from a community college is not as good as a university degree. I
He gives many reasons against the tuition-free college proposal. The proposal requires higher expenditure for government and it is not guaranteed that it will improve the educational system and be beneficial for students at community college. Furthermore, community colleges should figure out the solution to solve the growing dropout rates problem instead of trying to add more students to fill their classrooms. For working-class students, the Pell Grant program of federal government already provides two years of free community college for them, and it might also benefit middle-class students. He concludes that the most important thing is figuring out how to use tax money sensibly to help students attend post-secondary school. This article provides current and valuable information for anyone who is concerned with free tuition college
Over the past years of getting a college degree was the pathway to get a settle career. College has been a reason for people to carry on after high school. Now that tuition has been raised, getting a degree seems to drain students with more loans and could be in debt. College has been raised to the point where people rather start working at a minimum wage than continuing with school. Working on a part time job would be an easier choice rather than pursuing towards their degree. As people attend college, fees build up and students loaning money and possibly be in debt. Not only that, some may say college isn’t worth it, but it is. Getting a degree pays off at the end going towards your career path, making twice as much as you would work at a regular job. Students who have received a degree are slowly declining. To make adjustment, College should be free for
What if one day the tuition of your community college was to become free? If you couldn 't afford college would you go? That’s exactly what President Obama is trying to propose in his State of The Union speech on January 20th 2015. In his words he claims “to lower the cost of community college, to zero”. I am a community college student freshman at Frederick Community College. Being a community college student I value my education and feel if this new proposal is to be put in place there will be people who don’t want to be there just like high school. Community college is something that runs in my family as my two cousins have attended a junior college in the past. I am in my first year at community college and can say that it is a lot different from high school as far as the expectations and work load. There are essentially some problems with this new proposal. Once I heard that President Obama
College has been an ongoing debate that both parents and students can’t seem to wrap their head around. The cost and the consequence of debt for these ongoing students has become a headache. This topic has been up for debate for quite some time now, when it comes to Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders these two both agree that the cost of college will no longer be a milestone towards success. Clinton goal is to make sure that no student has to borrow to pay for tuition, books, or fees to attend a four year public college in their state. The New College Compact policy is a plan to give additional support that will reduce all costs, including living expenses by thousands. Students at community colleges will receive free tuition and also lower student loans interest rate, providing 17.5 billion to encourage colleges to set affordable rates that don’t require student loans. Sanders goal is making public colleges and universities tuition free. The College for All Act states that the federal government would cover 67% of the cost, while the state will be responsible for the remaining 33%. He states that “the runway costs of higher education is one of the driving forces behind growing income inequality in the US”.
As the high school chapter is coming to a close, many students have to make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. Hopefully, for many that decision is to enroll in a college and attain a higher education. However, as tuition costs rise, students have to take a second look at their options for a better future. A community college is that second look for many because it is the less expensive option. From 2007-2009, enrollment for community colleges has increased by 24 percent (“College costs and the CPI”). Students aren’t choosing a college for educational purposes because they are overwhelmed by financial issues. They are attending community colleges so they will be able to graduate with a lower debt. Some seniors have wanted to attend a certain university all their life and they work toward that goal through grade school; however, they are hindered by soaring tuition for that college. Students should be able to attend a private university if they mee...
College is a very important investment because what one decides to do in college will affect their lives forever. As we all know, college is absolutely not free, and it can one of the most costly investments in one’s entire life. Some students have to pay for their own college education, while other students have people pay for their college, for example their parents or grandparents. Some may think that those students who have their college paid for by someone else are more likely to succeed, but that assumption is erroneous. Students who pay for their own college versus students who do not pay for their college value their education more, understand how to focus their priorities, and have a principle that working hard is virtuous and worthy of reward.
I told my parents, my friend is getting paid for perfect grades, why aren’t I not getting paid. My parents said, “Education is what you are being paid. ”Some people might not agree, but it is the right action to do in this case. Paying students’ money for great grades only bribe students’ to improve higher in school. “Students have to appreciate the feeling of success.”
Yes, I strongly believe that college education should be free for everyone because Education is a basic necessity of our society these days. Free education wouldn’t just benefit one generation or one society but it can benefit the whole nation. If a nation is educated, then it can benefit the whole country and it can get better job opportunities for its citizens because in today’s world we can see highly paid jobs are knowledge based or require advanced technical skills. So in my opinion more educated nation would help remove all those flaws which are keeping country’s economy from growing rapidly. If the education is free in college then it can help a lot of those students who got good grades in their high schools but could not get into the college because of their financial situation. This way these kind of needy students who deserves to get a good degree and basically these students are future of America but they could not get it through
