The city of Austin became the capital of Texas in 1838 when two of Sam Houston’s protégés James Collingsworth and Peter Grayson ran against his nemesis Mirabeau B. Lamar. (Lomax paragraph 3, 2013) It didn’t become official till 1846 when it officially became a capitol. I think Austin was chosen as the capital over more thriving cities because of how the story of Stephen F. Austin actions against the Mexican government. He represented a huge part of the Texas Anglo population at the time as well. (Gibson, Robinson, pg. 36 para. 2) Not to mention that in 1835 he resisted the Mexican troops and due to this it lead to the independence of Texas from Mexico. (Gibson, Robinson, pg. 37 para. 5) As a result of March 16, 1836 the Constitution of Texas was born. (Gibson, Robinson, pg. 37 para. 7) A huge reason why I think Austin was chosen the capital instead of a great city like Houston was due to Stephen F. Austin’s contribution with Texas, especially when he contributed to the Anglo population in the Texas region in 1821 when Mexico won its independence from Spain. (Gibson, Robinson, pg. 36 para. 1) Another reason was when President Mirabeau B. Lamar, the president of Texas at the time, chose to name it after Stephen F. Austin who he called the “father of Texas”, but what really made the location perfect for the city of Austin was the beauty the land had when the location was being chosen.(austinrelocationguide.com para. 3, 2012) But others such as Sam Houston disagreed about the location; he even tried to move the capitol to Houston because at the time it was really vulnerable to Mexican troops attacking and the local Indians as well.(Barker para.5, 2012) Nonetheless I think overall that the history of the city’s name has more th...

When we see Texas, we remember today mainly for its BBQ, Football and Black Gold, Texas tea. However, there is much more than just the usual itineraries that we find in most other states as well. Molly Ivins in her essay “Is Texas America” categorically states that, “Here's the deal on Texas. It's big. So big there's about five distinct and different places here, separated from one another geologically, topographically, botanically, ethnically, culturally and climatically” (Ivins). This is a true belief from Molly Ivins of how huge Texas was and how the demographics changed in each geographical location in Texas. The population of Texas and the demographics are two essential factors that include many important parameters in deciding the history of any state. The presence of many ethnic groups further adds to the diversification of

Also the way Texas began in a way that said that they should be apart of the United States. In the end there were more important reasons for annexing Texas into the union, than to leave Texas the way she was. From the early days of pioneers and settlers, thousands of Americans began to move into what would become Texas. The Mexican government wanted to populate the Texas area to increase the economy. For a long period of time the Mexican government had placed many laws on the territory, but none that were deeply enforced.

The Texas Constitution provides for the division of power and integration of Bill of Rights to the constituents of the State of Texas. The Texas Constitution is made up of a preamble, seventeen articles, and an appendix. The current Constitution was written on November 26, 1875, and adopted February 15, 1876, it is also the eighth constitution to be adopted by the State of Texas. Similar to the United States Constitution the Texas Constitution contains a preamble as follows, “Humbly invoking the blessing of Almighty God, the people of the State of Texas do ordain and establish this Constitution” (Tex. Const., pmbl).
To define the terminology of federalism to a simplistic way is the sharing of sovereignty between the national government and the local government. It is often described as the dual sovereignty of governments between the national and the local to exert power in the political system. In the US it is often been justified as one of the first to introduce federalism by the ‘founding fathers’ which were developed in order to escape from the overpowered central government. However, federalism in the United States is hitherto uncertain where the power lies in the contemporary political system. In this essay I will outline and explain how power relationship alternates between states and federal government. Moreover I will also discuss my perspective by weighing the evidence based upon resources. Based on these resources, it will aid me to evaluate the recent development in the federal-state relationship.
The government of the state of Texas is a difficult and complicated institution that is composed of many different levels. The question comes in to everyone's mind at one time or another whether or not to trust the government. It could be that people believe that the officials will take advantage of their power, or simply people don't like the idea of being controlled by someone who is not a family member or friend. To avoid this centralized power, the government is divided into stages and this is a reasonable ground for trusting the government. Government runs this state and it does deserve to be trusted.
Political culture is broadly shared values, beliefs, and attitudes about how government and society should function. Gov. Rick Perry speaks supporting strong Texas state government and minimal federal government intervention. Based on Texas’s founding origins, and experiences and orientation toward the marketplace (pro big business), who should participate in government, and the role of government. The three state political culture categories are moralistic, individualistic, and traditionalistic. Texas is a mix of traditionalistic and moralistic according to our textbook. The moralistic New England Puritanism view of the common good, government should promote public good. Individualistic view of government to provide order and protect property

Much of what Texas is today is because of the people who settled her land. Crafts such as quilting and the Texas Star pattern, dance like the Cotton-Eyed Joe and even the way Texans still hunt today can be traced back to the Middle Ages.
From my own reading, I was drawn into the history of events that have taken place in the Texas capital and was given an inside-view into the eyes of a political figure and the configuration of state politics and controversies. Reading about events such as the Bo Pilgrim bill is a catalyst for questions concerning what type of people have been and are currently in the Texas State government. Politicians, in the past, have needed to rely on funds from supports like Bo Pilgrim in order to run their campaigns; by raising the call on ethical issues in the state government, such as bribery, politicians like Ratliff prove that their interests concern the people, not their politics. Sterken’s segments on the history of Ratliff’s time as the Texas Lieutenant Governor is a fascinating part of, not only Ratliff’s story, but of the events that transpired during that time. From personal experience, an individual who states that they stand for bipartisan political interests is vastly untrue, as those people will always display favor for one ideology over the other. At times, Ratliff has shown his favor for more democratic values despite his republican billing; however, from Sterken account, Ratliff’s tenure as Lieutenant Governor shows his grit to stand against both parties under duress by controversial issues. “Bill Ratliff: A Profile of Courage and Leadership in American Politics” is an excellent publication that not only serves to educate, but to
The state capital of Texas is Austin. Austin has the world's largest bat colony under the Congress Avenue Bridge. According to Bat Conservation International, “About 1.5 million bats take up residence there during the summer, eating up to 20,000 pounds of insects each night” Austin became the Capital of Texas, because in 1839 the congress of Texas formed a commission to seek a site for a new capital to named for Stephen F. Austin. Mirabue B Lamar, second president of the newly formed republic of Texas, advised the commissioners to investigate the area named Waterloo, noting the area’s hills, waterways, and pleasant surroundings.
