Should animals have rights? They can almost be compared to humans due to the fact that they have a heart, they can walk, and they can communicate with others. However, animals don’t necessarily kill humans for food like we kill them for food. So, in many minds, animals are not comparable to humans. But, should animals still have rights? Is it really morally acceptable to kill animals for food?

Some people believe that killing animals is unacceptable. They believe that violates animal rights if such rights existed. Tom Regan wrote in Religion and Animal Rights that “the animal rights position concerns the alleged wrongfulness of treating animals in certain ways (Regan). I agree that some people do treat animals cruelly and I believe that should be outlawed. Animals are defenseless creatures and it is not fair to abuse an animal when animals can not defend themselves in a way that a human being could defend themselves. They do not have the will power like we do to fight off such predators.

Next, it comes to some of the “illegal-ness” of hunting. Poaching is a good example. Someone always has to find a way to break a law. You are not supposed to hunt at dark. It could not be put any simpler than that. A few weeks ago some of my boyfriends friends decided to go poaching. They are regular hunters and knew of such a law because they have been hunting since they knew how to walk. But, they decided to let the best of them take over. They went out at 3 am one morning to a field they knew they could find deer at. They shot a bunch of deer just to shoot them. Overall, animal rights should be respected, but to an extent. It should not be allowed to kill any animal for the fun and games of it. It should be a serious matter and it should be taken seriously. Hunting should be respected and by respected I mean not poaching, or killing an animal to leave for the wild to eat it or even for the people that just kill them for the antlers. If you are going to kill an animal you need to eat it, or give it to someone that you know that will. Hunting is a serious sport and it should always be that way. Not as any joking matter. It does involve a weapon and if it is not taken seriously then you as a hunter could be facing tons of fines and/or possible imprisonment and if any of those options are possibilities then you should be able to prevent it before they happen!
