Throughout the stories we discussed these immigrant families have been in a struggle with changing to a different culture. The transition between cultures in hardly ever an easy change.
The relationship between native cultures and the culture which the families are immigrating to can be a very distinct. When Immigrating to another country, immigrants seem different to others by the way they live, act, and even talk. Most Immigrants move because of new opportunities or to escape property. For instance, when people immigrate to America they believe in new hope and American is a place of opportunity. Again in Children of Loneliness, the mother replies, ”Here, Teacherin mine, you to learn me in my old age how to put the bite in my mouth
(Yezierska 178)” after being asked to use a fork and eat properly by her daughter. The daughter,
Rachel, ask her to eat properly because the way the parents ate seemed improper to American culture. In Yiyun Li’s story A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, the main character, Mr. Shi, talks to a woman who doesn't speak Chinese but Li tell us that.“He does not understand much of what she is saying, but he feels her joy in talking to her, the same joy he feels listen to her (Li
187)”. Even though Mr. Shi didn't understand her and she was considered different, he still talked to her and enjoyed doing so because he can relate to his feelings of isolation and culture shock. Af. Although being considered different is hard for some people to deal with, it is not always ways a bad thing. In different countries, they are different ways parents treat their children in terms of discipline. Some cultures would rather punish their children with word of disappointment
