A. Title: The title of this poem suggests that it is about a small country town with one road, most likely in the middle of nowhere. Very few people and very few things around for a person to do with their free time.
B. Paraphrase: We could be here. This is the valley and its highway which
rabbits can't get across but kids can. They jump to the store with sweetness on
their tongues. They watch for fun. Dimes fall from their palms to pay for the
candies they eat on the way home. There are lots of dogs and cats and chickens
at the house. A pot bangs and water runs in the kitchen, beans are getting
cooked for dinner. Brown soup for the the men who work the fields. No matter
what race, its hard for anyone who does work in the fields. The cotton gin is a
major factor in the money dream and the mill makes money for a wife-and maybe
my wife, who boxed peaches and plums and hoed her dad's fields as a girl. We
could go back. I could lose this easy job I have. Just talking and using a shovel, a
hoe, a broom that takes everything away. All my daughter does is worry. She
touches my hand and we eat snow cones from a roadside vendor in the shade
while we look around. Behind sunglasses I see where I once was. A brow kid
getting across the road. “he's like me,” I tell my daughter and she stops eating
her snow cone. He looks both was then leaps across the road where riches
happen on red tongues.
C. Connotations:The poem is written in free verse with no rhyme or rhythm to be
found. The speaker is seeing himself in someone else's actions like a flash back to the time when he was at that age. The poet uses a metaphor to describe the kids as “Spectators of fun.” Gary Soto also uses personification when he states that the, “pot bangs and water runs...”
D. Attitude:The speaker is a father, a worker of the fields. His attitude is one of childishness and relaxation. He is eating snow cones with his daughter and talking about when he was a kid and now as an adult. The attitude of the poet is that this is just the way of life in the small towns and the farming towns are pretty much all boring and monotonous.
Rebecca Sharpless’ book “Fertile Ground, Narrow Choices” tells the stories of everyday women in Central Texas on cotton farms. She argues that women were not just good for keeping house, cooking, sewing and raising children but that they were an essential key to the economy. Whether they were picking cotton alongside men or bearing children
The book “A Long Way From Chicago” is an adventurous and funny story. The story takes place at Joey Dowdel’s Grandmothers farm house in the country. Joey and his sister Mary Alice were sent to their Grandma’s house during the summer because their parents had to go to Canada for their work. At first, Joey felt uncomfortable with his Grandmother because he had never met her before but eventually he got to know her and they became close friends.

From the very first word of the poem, there is a command coming from an unnamed speaker. This establishes a sense of authority and gives the speaker a dominant position where they are dictating the poem to the reader rather than a collaborative interacti...
The book Clear Springs is about Bobbie Ann Mason’s life growing up in the south after World War II and the changes within her family. Antoinette's story begins when she is a young girl in early nineteenth- century Jamaica. The white daughter of ex-slave owners. Five years have passed since her father, Mr. Cosway, reportedly drunk himself to death. As a young girl, Antoinette lives at Coulibri Estate with her widowed mother, Annette, her sickly younger brother, Pierre.Antoinette spends her days in isolation Discontent, however, is rising among the freed blacks, who protest one night outside the house. Bearing torches, they accidentally set the house on fire, and Pierre is badly hurt. The events of the night leave Antoinette dangerously ill for six weeks. She wakes to find herself in Aunt Cora's care. Pierre has died. When Antoinette is seventeen, Mr. Mason announces on his visit that friends from England will be coming the following winter. He means to present Antoinette into society as a cultivated woman, fit for marriage. Richard Mason offered him £30,000 if he proposed. Desperate for money, he agreed to the marriage. After the marriage everything seemed to be fine but then after a while Antoinettes husband started drifting away from her. This drove her crazy and made her question her marriage. The story ended with Antoinette locked up in England in Rochesters house.
In “A Small Place” by Jamaica Kincaid, Kincaid criticizes tourists for being heartless and ignorant to the problems that the people of Antigua had and the sacrifices that had to be made to make Antigua a tremendous tourist/vacation spot. While Kincaid makes a strong argument, her argument suggests that she doesn't realize what tourism is for the tourists. In other words, tourism is an escape for those who are going on vacation and the tourists are well within their rights to be “ignorant”, especially because no one is telling them what is wrong with Antigua.
rhyme. The poem has an A B A C D E A D rhyme. For instance, the words "Sense,"
Back in the 1800’s, slavery was a huge deal. Many rich white men owned slaves, and made them pick cotton. You wouldn’t think that this is a big deal, but it is hard work. Once you pick the actual cotton off of the plant, you have to pick out all the seeds-individually. “Also, I do remember that picking cotton by hand was painful hard work and that I was pretty reluctant to toil that hard.”
Two stories show the circle of life through the eyes of characters who have suffered and lost. William H. Armstrong wrote the book Sounder to show the tragedy of death affects the boy. Thornton Wilder wrote Our Town to show the cycle of life and death with two characters named George and Mr. Webb. His Stage Manager says, “This is the way we were: in our growing up and in our marrying and in our living and in our dying.” These two stories are extremely different in the story line but have the same basic idea that although people lose and suffer, they look for the positive side of things.
Robert Frost, an infamous poet best known for his original poetic technique, displays a reoccurring idea or theme of loneliness and isolation throughout many of his published works. The ways in which Frost represents and symbolizes ideas of solitude and desolation in poems are somehow slightly or very different. Loneliness and isolation are illustrated through Frost’s use of the dark night as well as depression in “Acquainted With the Night”, the objects the speaker encounters in “Waiting”, and the sense of abandonment and death in “Ghost House.”
Therefore, theoretically speaking, this isn’t a poem at all, just a rhyming prose with intelligent words strewn together.
In the poetry of William Blake and William Wordsworth, this difference between children and adults and their respective states of mind is articulated and developed. As a person ages, they move undeniably from childhood to adulthood, and their mentality moves with them. On the backs of Blake and Wordsworth, the reader is taken along this journey.
Poetry is a form of written word which has experience created by sound and meaning. It integrates various elements: Imagery; a figurative language which prompts the reader as well as the listener of the poem to create mental images. Poetic choice of words; this is based on the sound that is, denotation and connotation.
