Losing something that you have had for a long time can affect the way you act and feel. In the movie The Shawshank Redemption, Andy, experiences the death of his wife. The movie follows Andy Dufresne who is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a tough prison. However, only Andy knows he didn’t commit the crimes. Andy deals with the death of freedom by helping the prison employees with their financial problems, expanding the library and planning an escape in prison.
Andy uses his knowledge and understanding to help manage financial matters for the prison employees. At first, Andy helped Captain Hadley legally shelter his inheritance money from his dead brother and later helped another guard, Mr. Decans, with his children’s trust funds. This led Andy to reassign to another job in prison, an

opportunity to work with the warden on his money-laundering operation and at the same time helping the prison employees with their tax return funds. This was not only a great way for Andy to keep himself busy during his stay in prison but also gave him a privilege to work in a better environment than other inmates. If I was in a similar situation I would also use my advantage to help others with the use of my profession. If a friend of mine needed my help to study for a test, I would be gladly to help. It will not only keep me busy but by being a good friend and helping them get a better mark is what truly matters. Andy’s way of improving himself and by continuing his job as a banker was by helping out the prison employees. Another death of freedom Andy experiences was hoping to expand a library in prison.
Andy is reassigned to another job in prison to assist with an elderly inmate, Brooks Hatlen. When Andy had a chat with Brooks about how he was able to manage to work in a small library in prison by himself for 50 years. At that point, Andy thought it would be a great idea to ask the warden to expand the library. When he found out the warden wasn’t able to provide enough money for new books and to reconstruct the library, Andy took action and started to write letters daily to the state government for funds to help improve the decaying library. It took 6 months for Andy to receive a letter back from the state government, numerous amounts of used books and a $200 cheque to help build a new and improve library in prison. Andy had high hopes that he could perhaps change things around in prison by never giving up. If I was in a similar situation, I would also do my best achieving my goal no matter what circumstances I face. Andy used his ability to persuade the warden to expand the library leading him to reach his
goal. Lastly, Andy had a plan to escape prison. Andy knew he was innocent the entire time and that he doesn’t deserve spending his entire life in prison. He used his work experiences as an advantage to work with the warden to help create a fake person followed by a fake ID and other personal information for when he gets out. He also used a tool to carve out the walls in prison as it led to a sewage tunnel where he then escapes. It took Andy about 19 years during his stay in prison to plan an escape. Andy was able to run off freely with a fake identity and travel to an island in Mexico where he plans on spending his whole life there. If I was in the similar situation I would do my best to free myself in any situation I come across. If I know for a fact that I was innocent the whole time, and being punished for something that I didn’t do, I would do something about it and take action. It’s not fair for me as well as not worth wasting and ruining my life. Andy’s been innocent the whole time and was smart enough to find a way to free himself from being trapped in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Andy deals with the death of freedom by helping the prison employees with their financial problems, expanding the prison’s library and planning an escape. Andy’s intelligence led him to a better outcome and opportunities no one would have thought of and can do. The trials he faced to get to where he is now involved working with the warden and other prison employees on financial matters, sending numerous amount of letters to persuade the state government on reconstructing a library and other methods to help escape prison which kept him busy during his stay in prison go by quicker.
Andy goes to psychologist, Dr. Carrothers, to discuss his depression about Rob's death. He does not think he needs to be there because he is fine in school and he is fine at home. Andy talks about why the accident is his fault. He realizes he needs help with his depression and wants to come back for another visit to discuss what is going...
The creators of this movie used several effective, and often subtle, methods to illustrate the hope found in Andy and his surroundings. Andy was always portrayed as a clean-cut and well-groomed prisoner with his shirt always buttoned and his hair always combed. This self-respect was in great contrast to the other prisoners who were portrayed as dirty, stereotypical prisoners. The common prisoners also had vocabularies and grammar that were far inferior to Andy’s. The distinctions between Andy and the common prisoners showed that Andy was different, those differences were that he had hope.
The new prisoners stand linked together with chains, scared to death, in front of the Warden. He says, " I believe in two things, discipline and the Bible. Here you"ll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord, your ass belongs to me. " That was the kind of attitude Andy would have to live with from now on, and this was just the beginning.
First, Andy preserves his self-respect by fighting or defending himself from the rape squad of Shawshank Prison known as “The Sisters”.
The movie Shawshank Redemption depicts the story of Andy Dufresne, who is an innocent man that is sentenced to life in prison. At Shawshank, both Andy and the viewers, witness typical prison subculture.
Andy loses his best friend in a car wreck after drinking and driving. This affects Andy greatly. Draper shows Andy having to go to therapy for his depression from losing Robert. The beginning of therapy sessions were not great. Andy
They stood for the “American trust in collective action, and the fair legal process that transcended private feelings of what is considered right and wrong.”
Freedom is very important in Stephen King’s Novel, “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.” Andy, is a clear example of how the author feels about freedom as well as what freedom means to him. “I asked him once what the posters meant to him, and he gave me a peculiar, surprised sort of look. 'Why, they mean the same thing to me as they do to most cons, I guess,' he said. 'Freedom. You look at those pretty women, and you feel like you could almost ... not quite but almost step right through and be beside them.”(King 1982:32). Posters inspire freedom in Andy, allowing him to feel free in ways of imagination, but also, feel as if he were being portrayed in the posters. Andy also feels the same way in relation to freedom, whilst portraying an attitude as if he were a free man. “Andy Dufresne wasn't much like me or anyone else I ever knew since I came inside. He brought in five hundred dollars jammed up his back porch, but somehow that graymeat son of a bitch managed to bring in something else, as well. A sense...
The Shawshank Redemption is a 1997 drama film which takes place in a prison during the late 40’s. The film focuses on Andy Dufresne’s transition from his old life as banker to becoming a prisoner in the Shawshank penitentiary. The life shown in the Shawshank penitentiary is similar to that of normal society such as norms, economic transactions, and functions both prisoners and the officials. The roles the prisoners and officials take shows that Functionalism does not only take place in a normal functioning society, it also takes place in a total institution such as the prison shown in the film.
The film stars Tim Robbins as Andrew 'Andy' Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd 'Red' Redding. The film portrays Andy spending nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison, a surreal house of correction in Maine and his friendship with Red, a fellow inmate, which gradually develops over the years. Consequently the three reasons that the director wanted to produce this movie are to reveal hope, despair and integrity. Red describes the reasons eloquently: “All I know for sure is that Andy Dufresne wasn’t much like me or anyone else I ever knew. . . . It was a kind of inner light he carried around with him.”
“Well, all the plays that I was trying to write were plays that would grab an audience by the throat and not release them, rather than presenting an emotion which you could observe and walk away from.” by Arthur Miller. All great works provide a way to reach in and grab the audience through the reoccurring themes like, greed, jealousy, reputation and hypocrisy. Arthur Miller had one of those great works and it was called “The Crucible”. The play was based off of the witch trials that happened in Salem in the year of 1962. Some of the characters were actual characters involved in the witch trials. Arthur Miller wrote this play during the time of the “Red Scare”. Miller wrote The Crucible because he wanted to turn the The Salem Witch Trials into
“Get busy living or get busy dying” (106). Stephen King masterfully uses relatable quotes like this to weave a rich story full of pain, determination, and hope that engages readers. He connects with his audience by using realistic diction, incredibly vivid imagery, rich details, plain language, and varied syntax.
There are many books in the world that introduce the theme of prejudice using not only the racial standpoint, but also the way society looks at people as a whole. Not many of these books look at this touchy subject through the mind of a child. The book To Kill a Mockingbird takes that theme and runs with it. Harper Lee, the author of the book, decided to put aside all normal writing styles and take on a challenging and touchy subject of predigest and unjust in the norms of society from the eyes of the most innocent, children. The reason Lee decided to take this complicated viewpoint is to show the effects on a child’s behavior and the responses you could get out of such an impressionable mind. Writing in the eyes of a child also lets the reader get a new perspective in a way that the mind of an adult would not be able to understand. There are many examples of predigest in the eyes of a
In the media, prisons have always been depicted as a horrible place. The film, The Shawshank Redemption, is a prime example that supports the media 's suggestions about prison life. In the film we are familiarized with Andy Dufresne, who is a banker that is wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. While trying to both remain discreet and find his prison identity, he assists Ellis Boyd 'Red ' Redding, a peddler, and Brooks Hatlen. In his attempt to fit into the rough prison subculture, Andy strategically starts a business relationship with the captain Captain Bryon Hadley and Samuel Norton. The film gives an insider 's look at various aspects of prison life. These aspects include prison culture; explicitly, guard subculture and inmate subculture.
In the past, I have done reviews on John Adams, Rudy, Grease, and The Butler. For my fourth quarter movie review, I decided to watch To Kill A Mockingbird because I have already read the book and wanted to see the film adaptation of it. This movie focuses on the Finch family in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama around the time of the Great Depression. It is based off of the book of the same name by Harper Lee. Both focus on Scout and Jem Finch growing up in the deep South and struggling to figure out how to act in the world around them.
