I followed Lakshmi through her journey as she learned about life outside her small hometown in Nepal. She loved her mother and baby brother and worked hard to keep up with her repulsive step-father’s gambling habit. When given the opportunity to take a job that could provide for her family, Lakshmi accepted the offer. Unknowingly, she walked into the hands of horrible people who led her blindly on the path of prostitution. Discovering her fate, Lakshmi latched onto hope when all seemed bleak. Asoka, an emperor born in 304 BC, earns the title as an “enlightened ruler.” He guarded his citizens during the Conquest of Kalinga by teaching them how to properly govern, and conquer land non-aggressively, which helped them become a conjoined country. Like every human, Grandma India sometimes focuses more on herself than others’ feelings and can be too harsh when reprimanding her grandchildren. An instance of the first flaw is on a Monday after school, when the family is playing Monopoly. “She didn’t look up. She was preoccupied with examining her next move on the board. We were already resigned to the fact that she would skunk us all once again. ‘Right, how so?’ she mumbled, not taking her attention off the game for even one instant” (Pattillo 136). In this quote, we see that Grandma India is too preoccupied with the game to pay attention to Melba’s telling of her school day. Now, normally she would care more about Melba’s experiences, but in this moment she is more caught up in playing a game that

Frida Kahlo Born July 6, 1907, only three years prior to the Mexican Revolution, Frida Kahlo was a curious, wild, passionate girl who aspired to be a doctor. She grew up in a time in which a great creative movement began, one that would cause great transformation in Mexico. During and post the Revolution, Mexico transformed socially, politically, and culturally, giving itself a new identity of strength and solidarity. This is a crucial component to her life story, as she would later on lie about her birth date and claim it to be born in 1910 – giving herself the title of a child of the Revolution. Young Frida desired to learn and receive an education, and despite disapproval from her mother, applied to school and was among thirty-five girls accepted to the “Escuela Nacional Preparatoria.”
Lastly, and most important to me, is her that her camera lens is aimed at exposing injustice. I am a social work major and I have enjoyed seeing how others bring to light what is in the darkness. A picture is worth a thousand words and she has chosen to use those words to be a voice for the voiceless. Her work has inspired me to be creative and innovative in my fight for justice. She has inspired me to inquire how I can share what breaks my heart in a way that challenges audiences to want to join with me in the fight against racism, sexism, marginalization, and many more injustices that currently plague our

One of her later works, an installation titled Pumpkin of 2008, is a particularly good example of her style as an amassing of her experimentation in technique and personal expression. Her life experiences are very much present in her art, and it is for this reason that studying some of the aspects of her life is helpful, before examining her art, for by revealing some of these events, her artistic perspective may be better understood.
