Ancient Greece
In ancient Greece the shield and spear were used by the Trojans in the “Trojan War” as a weapon to kill enemies. The shield and spear were good weapon and protection for the war because the shield can block from arrows coming from the air, the spear can be a good weapon to those help to attack and stab an enemy from behind or in front.
In Greek mythology the war took place at troy and that is where they used the weapons to attack. The war took place in the mid-19th century or from 1260–1180 BC or the Bronze Age and that is when the shield and spear was used. “Why was the shield and spear used you ask” the shield and spear was used for weaponry for the Trojan War to stab and kill enemies.
“How the spear and shield is used
you ask” the spear is used by keeping both of your legs square and stepping “ left, right and throw” but they don’t just throw it directly at, they aim a little above because the head of the spear is heavier and it will fall down a little. The shield is used with either two straps or strings to hold with your arm horizontal behind the shield and you hold the shield in front of you and block all arrows, spears, or even to block a sword attack. Now you know about the who, what, where, when, why and how about the shield and spear and even a little about the bronze age and the Trojan war.
The Met museum said that the most popular used weapons were “spear, sword, axe, and the bow and arrow.” These weapons and tactics of fighting then became the backbone of weapons today, such as guns. Spears, bows and arrows allow knights to fight from a distance, such as hand grenades and guns used in today’s military.
However, only one of those elements would be strong enough to support the force of another man reigning death among his enemies, thus bronze is the only choice for an infantry weapon. The mining of bronze in Ancient Greece ultimately led to significant
During the Elizabethan period Europeans mainly focused on warfare. War required long range weapons to slow down the approaching enemy and short range weapons were needed for combat. This era started the usage of combustion and developed cannons and pistols. The advancements of weaponry also lead to the advancements in armor from chainmail to plate armor. Various weapons and armor’s were needed for warfare during the Elizabethan period.
In relation to war, the most preferred weapon was the javelin, which could be used for both close combat and long range. The javelin was a highly effective weapon and it ensured that those using it were not easy to defeat. Furthermore, the javelin was often used alongside a shield, which was essential for not only blocking attacks, but also kept the enemy at bay while the javelin was used to strike. 'The horse' was also used but because of having to use both a shield and
Virgil’s prose was written between 29 and 19 BC, meanwhile Homer’s story was around 8th century BC. Therefore, having been written around 700 years later, The Aeneid’s description of Aeneas’s shield is almost too similar to Achilles’s shield in the Iliad. Therefore, Homer’s description of Achilles’s shield was a more effective symbol. Because it was the original symbol, Achilles’s shield obviously inspired Virgil in his story, The Aeneid. Furthermore, Homer’s shield description was foreshadowing what was to come to Troy and Achilles in the continuance of the Trojan War. While it was not stated in the Iliad, Achilles would be killed by Paris near the closing of the war. Therefore, the shield was foreshadowing the death and despair that would come to Achilles. Meanwhile, Aeneas’s shield simply told him of the great fortune ahead. The shield of Achilles was more effective because the reader did not know that shield was foretelling his fate. Therefore, it was more successful by its warning and
Without the right ecosystem for horses, the ancient Greeks were forced to trade for horses, which were highly expensive. The ancient Greeks were then forced to come up with a way to counter the Persians’ use of cavalry, which they solved with the creation of the phalanx. A phalanx was a group of soldiers armed with 7- to 8-foot-long spears, short swords, and round shields that were able to interlock with other shields. The soldiers wore a helmet, breastplate, and usually greaves. A phalanx is made up of lines of men extending their spears towards the enemy's direction. If a soldier is killed, the soldier from behind is to take his place, and this continues until all of the soldiers are killed. Machiavelli wrote, “The injuries which the first rank suffered, depleted the last, and the first rank always remained complete; and thus the Phalanxes, because of their arrangement, were able rather to become depleted than broken, since the large (size of its) body made it more immobile.” Machiavelli greatly admired the phalanx and considered it to be a useful formation if used correctly. Eventually Phillip the II of Macedonia improved the phalanx by doubling the spear length and reducing the shield size, which greatly increased a phalanx’s mobility. The Greeks would line up their phalanxes, and when the Persian

...rated the superiority of the Greek long spear and armor over the weapons of the Persians, as well as the superior tactics of Miltiades and the military training of the Greek hoplites. The choice of weapons, training of warriors, selection of battle site, and timing had all worked together to help the Athenians prove that size doesn’t always matter.
Throughout the Iliad the warriors' dream of peace is projected over and over again in elaborate similes developed against a background of violence and death. Homer is able to balance the celebration of war's tragic, heroic values with scenes of battle and those creative values of civilized life that war destroys. The shield of Achilles symbolically represents the two poles of human condition, war and peace, with their corresponding aspects of human nature, the destructive and creative, which are implicit in every situation and statement of the poem and are put before us in something approaching abstract form; its emblem is an image of human life as a whole.
Up until the collapse of the Bronze Age, warfare was ruled by a chariot elite, who used their mobile platforms to better their enemies, either as battle taxis or as mobile archery platforms.2 These tactics were effective and utilized the weapons of their time effectively. However, it was around the time of the Bronze Age collapse that the slashing sword came into popularity. This weapon gave infantry an advantage over their restricted opponents, who could only stab with their pointed weapons. Coupled with the javelins ability to cripple horses and stop chariots, this new sword enabled less experienced warriors to fight more effectively.2 A swarm of infantry equipped with these weapons could therefore defeat a typical Bronze Age army of soldiers and chariots with relative
