tips. Coat: The face, tips of the ears, and the front of the legs are covered with a short smooth coat. The rest of the body, however, possesses a long, thick, glossy, coarser coat that ranges from 1.97 to 4.72 inches (5-12 cm) in length. The coat is either straight or slightly wavy and lies close except on the neck and chest. The undercoat is soft, dense, and well developed. The ears are well covered in hair with brushes forming at the bases and along the edges. The coat on the neck, back, and rear of the forearms and thighs is slightly wavy and particularly long. The tail is thickly coated and has long, slightly wavy hair on the bottom. Neck and Body: The long neck thickens slightly towards the shoulders and is held at a 45̊ angle. The chest is oval in cross section and extends to the elbows. The ribs are slightly arched. The fairly muscular brisket is wider at the front. The straight back is slightly raised at the withers and not too long. The loins are short and in a straight line with the back. The abdomen is firm and tucked up. The croup is a smooth continuation of the loins and slopes slightly towards the tail. At rest and when moving the tail is held in a light arch that reaches the hocks; when excited, the tail is raised to the level of the back.Legs and Feet: The shoulder blade is oblique, lies flat, and forms a 90̊ angle with the upper arm. The elbow is directed straight back. The forearm is well muscled and appears straight from all angles. The metacarpal is long and not too steep. The hindlegs are well angled at the knees and hocks. When viewed from behind the hindlegs appear straight. The thighs are sufficently muscled. The oval shaped feet are medium in size and possess close, arched toes. The nails and pads are fully pigmented. Color: The Chodský Pes is black to gunmetal with rich yellow "black and tan" markings. The markings occur on the edge and inside of the ear, above the eyes, on the cheeks where they continue to the throat and form a characteristic crescent, on the chest where they are separated from those on the throat, on the forelegs up to the carpal joint, on the inner and rear of the thighs, from the hind toes to the hocks, and around the vent. Additionally markings may be present on the bottom of the chest, abdomen, and tail as well as lacking on the back of the thighs.

Every year an estimated 4.5 million dog bites occur in the U.S. BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) is a law that suggests that certain breeds are more prone to aggression than others. By banning or restricting the breeds in question, it is believed to help reduce the number of attacks. BSL determines which breeds are dangerous using statistics. These statistics cannot be relied on for two reasons. One, there is no concrete method to determine a dog’s pedigree. Thus, a victim, animal control officer, or owner is trusted with identifying the dog through appearance. According to Scott and Fuller, authors of Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog, “It has been known for decades that the cross-bred offspring of purebred dogs of different breeds often bear little or no resemblance to either their sires or dams (1965).” Visual assessments are questionable. Two, population is not accounted for. Population is important, in that it provides context to percentages. Because a dog’s breed is impossible to pinpoint, we cannot provide numbers. BSL’s cause is rendered useless when we consider these points.

New technology, techniques and tools also make it easier to study the genetics of behavior, morphology and complex disease in domesticated animals that could easily be related to humans. Some of these tools include readily available information on gnomes, not only for different species but for different breeds within a species. Some technique using the genomes involves looking at the entire genome and locating the “causative” haplotype block, followed by fine-mapping focusing on a specific region across different breeds, therefore providing a better knowledge on the genotypic information. The next step would be to measure and classify behaviors such as herding, pointing and that “indefinable character” so treasured by
