A Shattered Visage Once upon a time, a little girl got everything She wanted. She was the envy and desire of her friends. She flaunted what She had, and with any quick motion could strike jealousy into the most unresentful a woman. She would tear them down with a glance, Make concern where freedom used to be. She was good at it. Even great. She enjoyed, the way people would stare at her and how She would feel when he light was drawn out of someone’s face. When a girl’s face would turn pale, stricken with self-loathing. The girls weren’t jealous, they were concerned, even, angry with themselves for not having everything She did. spoke of, She was why everyone had it so rough. Her Innocence was worn as a persona, to never be taken off or cleaned. But, She grew up, and her adversaries turned into fragile china dolls that had to polished before smashed on the ground. The only true victory was one lead by hope, dirty dolls do not just break. They were cleaned, polished, then broken. More devastating each time, but never expected. Their lives were a game to her, She even built a doll herself. She loved the doll, cared for the doll, polished the doll, repaired the doll when old age made the doll decrepit.
When She painted the doll, She was meticulous in her work and did it swiftly without a smudge. That was the only doll She took with her, She taught the doll to be like her. The doll would be her when ready. Then, She found another doll much prettier and kinder than the last. The new doll was a boy, who was tall and extremely new. The old doll was cast aside and remembered from time to time, but She was not cared for, or polished, or loved, or even repaired. The new doll was, though. The old doll got a chip, on her leg. That spread into a crack down her spine. Then transformed her into an old ugly hag of a doll. After years of mal maintenance, the old doll was so disfigured that it began to crumble. The doll that She cared for so much crumbed from the head toppled onto the ground and shattered. She ran over to see what happened, her old doll she remembered had crashed, just like the others. Oh, maybe she should have cared for the doll, repaired the doll, polished the doll or loved the doll. But she didn’t, She tossed it away like an old flame, a blast from the past that no one remembered but would relive in their mind, a fractured visage that everyone winced upon a look.
She didn’t even care enough to shed a tear on the dolls behalf, She was cold, heartless, her body held nothing but an ego and a passion for destruction. All girls wished her dead and She couldn’t even cry about it, how emotionless. But, now she would be the one to shatter, not any more girls should die because of her, She, would die a fiery death. A death only spurred by years of intentional pain inflicted on pure girls who did nothing but look her in the eye. The ones who dared to challenge her would not die this time, her prejudice will be ripped from her skin exposing what she had left, exposing her soft emotion. They would be the ones to build a china doll of her. Make her feel the loneliness of a life spent forgotten. She would be the one to gather dust, She would be the one to feel jealousy with a glance. Her face would be the one to turn pale with distaste. She would be detested, She would be shattered. A chip was created on her foot, turning into crack moving through her chest and turning her into a contorted mess of a girl. Until she tumbled, moved, shifted, fell, and shattered. Once upon a time, there were girls who wanted revenge, and they got what they wanted. Revenge would be the one to cleanse their souls of evils past, but never again would She be with them.
...through and seen as a child, she really overcame the battles of the community as an artist gathering bits and pieces of memories from the trash just to make something out of it. But, to Saar it meant the world to her to have that doll that was repaired for her on Christmas. She really didn’t see it trash but as treasure in her eyes.
Do you ever wonder why most girls are insecure? In “So I Ain’t No Good Girl” by Sharon Flake it perfectly explains why girls are insecure at a young age. This short story is about a teenage girl who gets abused by her boyfriend Raheem. Her story begins with her wanting to ride to school with Raheem. He tells her to “go to school without him cause he’s got things to do.” In reply she snaps at him and he slaps her. She reluctantly agrees to go to school without him. As the school bus is driving away, she sees Raheem kissing another girl. Flake shows how teenage girls are taught to be insecure by using realistic problems to show her character’s struggle.
In the poem “Barbie Doll” the speaker take more drastic measures to make herself acceptable to society. In line12 the speaker takes drastic measures to fix herself, “So she cut off her nose and legs.” This action will lead to her death in the end of the poem which would not have happened if her peers did not mock her about the way her nose and legs looked. People are aware of their own imperfections, but when people mock them and do not accept them because of it, that is when the drastic measures of starvation, excessive exercising, and depression can begin. Teenage rebellion is typically portrayed in stories, films, and other genres as a testosterone-based phenomenon. There is an overplayed need for one to acknowledge a boy’s rebellion against his father, his life direction, the “system,” in an effort to become a man, or rather an adult. However, rarely is the female addressed in such a scenario. What happens when little girls grow up? Do they rebel? Do they, in a sudden overpowering rush of estrogen, deny what has been taught to them from birth and shed their former youthful façades? Do they turn on their mothers? Her constant need of approval from men becomes a habit for Connie because she doesn’t get approval at home, instead she gets disapproval. “Why don’t you keep your room clean like your sister? In Marge Piercy’s, “Barbie Doll,” we see the effect that society has on the expectations of women. A woman, like the girl described in ‘Barbie Doll’, should be perfect. She should know how to cook and clean, but most importantly be attractive according to the impossible stereotypes of womanly beauty. Many women in today’s society are compared to the unrealistic life and form of the doll. The doll, throughout many years, has transformed itself from a popular toy to a role model for actual women. The extremes to which women take this role model are implicated in this short, yet truthful poem.

The Barbie is a plastic, man-made female toy, which has perfect facial symmetry, unnatural body dimensions, and perfectly unblemished white skin. In Chris Semansky’s Overview of “Barbie Doll,” he explains that the Barbie “is invented to show women have been socialized into thinking of their bodies and behavior in relation to a male-controlled idea” (Semansky). The title directly alludes to the Barbie toy, which represents a design of a man-made construction of the female image that shows an unnatural human form that could only exist inside the imagination of men. Throughout both “Barbie Doll” and “The Birthmark” you will find the female protagonists seeking an ultimately perfect form, free of the characteristics that those around them see as unworthy. It is as if they are chasing the blueprint of perfection that is present in the Barbie. The original Barbie came with three outfits a bathing suit, a tennis outfit, and a wedding dress (Semansky). Her outfits clearly symbolize restrictions forced on female privilege, identity, and autonomy, where “she embodies the ideals and values of her middle-class American community” who expect her to “spend her days at the country club and her afternoons cooking dinner for her husband” (Semansky). This is directly similar to the “outfits” those around the women in “Barbie Doll” where the girlchild is born
The poem, "Barbie Doll," written by Marge Piercy tells the story of a young girl growing up through the adolescence stage characterized by appearances and barbarity. The author uses imagery and fluctuating tone to describe the struggles the girl is experiencing during her teenage years, and the affects that can happen. The title of this poem is a good description of how most societies expect others, especially girls to look. Constantly, people are mocked for their appearance and expected to represent a "barbie-doll"-like figure. Few are "blessed" with this description. The female gender is positioned into the stereotype that women should be thin and beautiful. With this girl, the effects were detrimental. The first stanza describes the influence that a child is placed into during early childhood. Girls are expected to play with "dolls" and "stoves and irons," the usual toys that relate to the old-fashioned duties of women. In conclusion , I believe that as strong as the protagonist’s self image of herself was, one girl is no match for all of society, which has efficiently put her “in her place”. This manipulation of the girl’s self image is not only the end of her unique identity, but it is also a blow against freedom and individualism. Unfortunately for this horse, she could not roam free forever, and she has finally been caught.
“The Youngest Doll” by Rosario Ferre is ultimately about an aunt who constantly creates life-sized dolls for her three nieces. It becomes more of an obsession rather than hobby when the author explains that each year the aunt spends more time and effort into making these dolls resemble her nieces as much as possible. Towards the end of the story the youngest niece ends up marrying a doctor. The doctor who she ends up marrying views her more as an object to flaunt rather than respecting her worth. Many of the critics who analyze the story come across the idea that Rosario Ferre is attempting to make it appointed that during this time period there was a mixture of sexism, racism, gender, and class implications.
