In Sharon M. Draper's novel Blended, the protagonist Isabella Badia Thornton (Izzy, abbreviated) continuously struggles with many forms of adversity, mirroring real-life experiences, including my own. As we, the readers, reflect on Izzy's obstacles, we can find parallels within our own diverse identities. Today, I aim to inform you of the hardships Izzy faces in this fictional novel and reflect on my real-life encounters with adversity. Isabella, an eleven-year-old biracial piano prodigy, has to switch between two different lives every week because of her parents' divorce. One week, she lives in a luxury house with her dad, his girlfriend Anastasia, and her son Darren. I remember clear moments when racial slurs were directed at me and my mom while strolling on Que­en Street. But the hurt went beyond mere insults - former peers also made racist re­marks, impacting my self-esteem. Being labelled as a "bomber" in an environment I thought of as safe purely because of my hijab, was an upsetting reminder of the ignorance that still takes over our society, specifically after tragic events like 9/11 influenced these hurtful racial comments. Initially, these bad experiences made me feel emotions like anger and sadness since I appreciated and loved my head-covering as it deepened my relationship with my beliefs and represented my religion physically, but these negative remarks toward it made me upset. However, over time, I've learned to draw strength from these challenges. Each encounter with discrimination has helped me grow mentally and break free from stereotypes and misconceptions. My self-worth is not defined by the narrow-mindedness of others, but by my empowerment through embracing my individuality and beliefs. At last, confronting difficulties strengthens
