Shark Attacks
The serious attacks are mainly by four species. The Bull shark. the Tiger, the Great White and the Oceanic Whitetip shark. The Grey Nurse (Sand Tiger) and the Bronze Whaler have for many years been blamed for many attacks but it seems nearly all were mistaken identity. The Grey Nurse is now protected in most States in Australia.
The Great White is the largest and has a high percentage of fatal attacks. The Bull shark is responsible for a lot of attacks on swimmers and people in shallow water. From reports it seems a lot of these attacks were only one bite but a large percentage of the victims died of blood loss and shock. It is likely to be the worlds number one killer shark on swimmers. I have heard of a lot of encounters

Many of these fatal attacks have occurred in South Australia in areas well known for Great Whites. Abalone divers nearly always work in areas where seals are present and the water is cool. This is ideal for attracting the Great White. Add to this the fact that they spend an enormous time in the water and it is a recipe for disaster. It was noticed in California USA, that Abalone divers were only attacked north of Point Conception. It was later discovered that the law in North California did not allow abalone divers to use scuba equipment, which meant they spent much more time at the surface. In southern California scuba was permitted! Spearfishing has two major negative factors. The first is that they are working on the surface as it is illegal to spearfish with scuba equipment. It is well known that the Great White usually attacks on, or very close to the surface, coming up from below its intended prey. The second problem with spearfishing is obviously the dead fish and blood attracting sharks. Even usually non-aggressive species of sharks will attack a spearfisherman if he has killed a fish. The book 'Shark Attacks' by Alex MacCormick (1996) also wrote of this incident. It seems this information was taken from 'The Adelaide Advertiser' newspaper in 1962. The book wrote the …show more content…
Incidentally I have never stopped diving and still enjoy the activity. Regards Brian Kennington

"You mention how unreliable even the official stories about Shark attacks are. Yes indeed. In the book Shark Attack by Alex MacCormick, they list an "unprovoked" shark attack by a Sand Tiger off Cocodrie Louisiana. They say the guy was just sitting on a beam and CHOMP a sand tiger grabbed both his legs and tried to twist them off.
I know the divers involved. They're featured in my book. One Diver had SPEARED the shark (for a Bar-B-Que) and it was twisting around in the bottom murk with mouth agape and grabbed the other diver's leg. Simple as that. They chuckled about it. "Those newspapers believe anything". Anyway that was ten years ago."

Shark nets have been implemented in locations across the world in response to shark sightings and attacks. Nets are submerged beneath the surface of the water, roughly 200 metres from the shoreline. The meshing is designed to be large to capture sharks, leaving them to struggle before eventually drowning under the weight of their own body. The meshing allows small fish to pass through, however captures larger fish and marine species. Shark nets provide no discrimination between common, vulnerable and endangered species, resulting in a high mortality rate for a variety of marine wildlife.
’’They are gray-brown to olive-green on top with off-white undersides, and they have heavily serrated, triangular teeth’’(National Geographic ‘’Hammerhead Sharks’’ 1).These are the usual colors of sharks. When you visualize a shark, the shark you would see would most likely resemble a bull shark. ’’They they almost resemble tiger sharks, and the problem is that tiger sharks are even more dangerous than bull sharks. To be honest,if you have to be extremely afraid of one species of shark, then it would probably be the bull shark. ’’Among the most likely sharks to attack humans, bull sharks favor shallow coastal waters-the same places humans prefer to swim’’(National Geographic ‘’Bull Shark’’ 1).This means that the bull shark would be the most feared by humans because they swim in the same places that humans swim.
But occasionally the younger sharks are preyed on by bigger sharks that do not necessarily have to be Bull sharks they can be become prey to any larger species of shark and occasionally a crocodile. However there are parasites like Pandarus sinuatus, and Periscopus dentatus that use the surface of the shark’s skin and use it to survive (Curtis). Though that does not in anyway decrease or increase the economic uses for the bull shark, its effects on the environment, or level of danger to humans. In certain places around the world the amount of bull sharks is decreasing slightly, because sharks can be harvested to make fish food, for their meat, for oils, and their fins for shark fin soup, or in asia their skin can be used to make “good leather” (“Bullshark”; Curtis). Even though their numbers are thought to be decreasing according to the International Shark Attack Files, otherwise known as the ISAF, has reported that there have been at least 70 reported unprovoked attacks on humans of which 17 were fatal, but that is only the known number of the reported attacks by bull sharks there most likely have been many more attacks that went unreported (“Bullshark”; Curtis). They are known for being one of “the most dangerous sharks in the world” because they along side the tiger shark, and great white they are the most common sharks to attack a human
Manta rays, humpback whales, and dolphins are all gentle giants of the sea. These playful creatures enjoy leaping out of water, creating an unforgettable experience for the tourists of Hawaii (Saito). On the other hand, jellyfish and sharks cause fear in beachgoers because their attacks can lead to painful and life threatening injuries. Swimmers in Hawaii are often victimized by box jellyfish. The stings hurt quite a bit and cause an unpleasant burning sensation. Some people even suffer from a severe allergic reaction to the toxin and are hospitalized (“Dangers in Hawaii”). People may also be hospitalized from shark attacks. Three to four shark attacks occur each year in Hawaii, usually resulting in only the loss of an appendage. However, numerous shark sightings as close as twenty yards away from shore to as far as out at sea have been reported. Jan TenBruggencate’s article, "A Shark Bites off Left Arm of Teenage Kauai Surfer,” tells the story of thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton who fell victim to a shark attack in October of 2003. While surfing in Hawaii, a shark estimated to be 12 to 15 feet long bit into Bethany’s surfboard and took a majority of her left arm. Other major shark attacks include Joe Thomson, 1985, who lost his right forearm, Michael Coots, 1997, who lost the lower portion of his right leg, and Hokuanu Aki, 2002, who lost his left foot. Each victim had to fight with the shark to break free and were lucky to escape with minimal
the drum- lines program with hooks like needles is working even though sometimes it’s a false call but it is keeping every one safe so far. In my opinion, I think that the main reason there is shark attacks because of crowded beaches. I think that because there is so many people in the water that you can’t sea your surroundings.
The bull shark may be known to thrive in the Mississippi River and around Nicaragua but are wide spread throughout the world. The bull sharks have an ability to penetrate far up bays and rivers. Some bull sharks have even been found as far as a couple hundred kilometers from the sea. Bull sharks have also been found in Potomac river. Potomac river is located in southern Maryland and is about 405 miles away from the ocean. There has never been a reported shark attack in Maryland which seems crazy now knowing that bull sharks have been found only 200 yards away from the point lookout state park in Maryland. What is crazy is that bull sharks have the abilities to travel in many different environments and depths but tends to stay in shallow waters between 3-30 meters of water.
Sharks have also been subjected to medical research, games and competitions, jewellery, souvenirs and cosmetics. We need to take into consideration that sharks play a vital role in the natural world that we live in. it is imperative that we look after these majestic creatures and ensure they remain protected. We need to be aware of the dangers of sharks, swim in protected areas where there are shark nets, and do not swim after dark in the sea (especially not alone) as the sea is the sharks home. Humans should also be wearing wet suits as protection in the ocean. The sea is where they live, they swim freely and they eat – they do not particularly target humans but rather prey on food that is available to them in their habitat.
said, “Every time you dive, you hope you'll see something new - some new species. Sometimes the ocean gives you a gift, sometimes it doesn't.” As you are swimming under the ocean, imagine the sparkle of the water as you look up the surface from a hundred feet below; floating along with the current, slowly and deeply breathing while observing the sea life. Continue to imagine the ability to remain underwater for an hour or more, just swimming and observing the ocean. This is the life of a scuba diver. Many people think of Scuba Diving as a swim in the water, but in reality it is a very dangerous, and potentially fatal sport and activity. There are many types of Scuba
In 2015 only 59 shark attacks have occurred around the world compared to the millions of sharks killed by humans every year. Due to these accidental shark attacks people tend to think that sharks, especially Great Whites are evil creatures with malice intentions when attacks do occur; but, on the contrary that is wrong. Sharks are not the only beautiful and unique creatures in the ocean, they also play a vital role in our ecosystem; however, due to human interference they might not be around much longer, through awareness sharks can be protected from endangerment.
Thesis: Sharks should be conserved because they are an important part of the ocean, attacks are often incidental, and human behavior influences the behavior of sharks.
The big question of the summer was to deal with the sharks and also enjoy family vacation. Each decade has had an increase in the amount of shark attacks than the previous one. A shark attack is defined as “ an interaction between humans and sharks that results in significant or life-threatening injuries or death”
Hundreds of people, who get in the ocean every year, are almost none that encounter sharks. Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one. Shark attacks are mistakes and the idea of a shark off every beach waiting for people to come in the water is completely untrue. I will inform you on the background knowledge of sharks and the reasons why humans should not be afraid only aware.
Well if you happen to have no idea or clue as into what I’m talking about, which I seriously doubt that’s would be the case. Ever saw the movie Jaws and all of the subsequent directed by Steven Spielberg, then you definitely have a great picture of what the Great Whites are and what they are capable of doing to a human and other sea animal, this also label them one of the most dangerous wild life. The Great White also goes by these other names White Pointer or White Death is from a large species of lamniform shark. If you ever trying to locate on...
Although sea life isnt the #1 cause of death or injury during this sport, it's still something to be aware of. Sea life is just like anything else in this world- if you mess with it, it will mess with you. Therefore, it's always a good idea to stay distant and if you do decide to come close, just be kind! The most important thing is to stay away from feeding the wild life. The danger of wildlife in the ocean while scuba diving is almost nonexistent but as soon as you feed them, that danger increases a bunch (Scuba DIver Life). Although its rare, animals usually only strike when being fed a first time, but not a second. Feeding sharks, eels, and other potentially aggressive sea creatures is never smart; and altering the natural behavior of any creature is not a good idea (Scuba Diver Life). The most dangerous ocean animal to look out for is something that is quite easy to stay away from, the coral. It does not attack or move, but it is extremely painful and and be poisonous. It is also one of the USs most protected animal and can easily get sick and die. “Even the gentlest touch of a diver's fin or hand may kill delicate coral polyps. A diver who touches the reef does more damage to the coral than the coral does to him” (ThoughtCo). Ocean animals are beautifully interesting creatures, but should always be handled with
