Shara Grimké uses religion in her document to defend her reasoning on why men and women should both be treated as equals. Although religion was also used by slave owners to solidify slavery I feel that Grimké not only helped her argument on equal rights for women but also helped defend the rights of slaves. Grimké states that “Women have been placed by John Quincy Adams, side by side with the slave…” that they were ranked with the oppressed, and that “Man has asserted and assumed authority over [them]” (Grimké 1838). So when Grimké used religion to explain why men and women should be equal she is also, in a way, helping slaves be seen as equals. At this time many still followed some type of Christianity, so using God to defend her argument
was a smart way to reach a big community. When Grimké spoke about how God never intended men to have power over others, it would help the people see that men, women, and slaves are all people and they should be treated as equals (Grimké 1838). Grimké wasn't intentionally trying to help slaves but she did when she compared the two. Her intention was to use religion get people to think that it was not morally right for women to be treated less than men and hopefully gain rights for women. Grimké made a compelling argument than not only made you think of women as equals but also slaves.
Still, her deviation from the confederate mindset did not cause her to necessarily promote total equality between men and women. As an abolitionist, Grimke suggested that women use their submissive positions in the household in order to influence heir husbands. Furthermore, Grimke’s tone and proposals differed as she targeted women from the North and the South. Grimke recognized that in the common Southern household, the woman would take the place of a homemaker and nurturer, qualities still primarily associated with women, and she used these stereotypes to the abolitionist advantage. In her four pronged “An Appeal to the Christian Women of the South”, Grimke states that the Southern Christian Woman has four duties in regards to abolition: to read, pray, speak and act. These four steps to abolition use the place of white women in the common household to circumvent around the little power that they had at this time. Grimke’s tone changes in her “Appeal to the Women of the Nominally Free States”, as she now refers to black women as not just slaves but “sisters” to whom white women owe humanization. In a

As women who spoke publicly against slavery and for women's rights, they continued to inspire female activists to not give up and keep fighting for all human beings to be equal.
Christianity was used as a tool for keeping the slaves docile and obedient to their master. They were only taught passages that emphasized submissiveness and learned only their master’s words. Throughout their narratives both Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs expose the hypocrisy and moral contradictions between the religion slaveholders preach and true Christianity. We learn that having a religious master is one of the worst things as a slave because masters feel a certain entitlement to commit these horrible crimes and that God is behind them. Separating the Christianity of the South and true or Godly Christianity became essential in realizing that religion could be used as justification for freedom. Douglass’ and Jacobs’ ability to read allowed them to make their own inferences of the Bible and learned that God did not advocate enslavement. Some women also used religion to justify the rights of women and equality. In, “The Former Slave Sojourner Truth Link Women’s Rights to Antislavery, 1851,” Sojourner said:
Moreover, many owners later came to feel that Christianity may actually have encouraged rebellion (all those stories of Moses and the Israelites in Egypt, after all, talked about the liberation of the slaves), and so they began to discourage Christian missionaries from preaching to the slaves. African Americans have taken their own spiritual, religious journey. God was looked upon as a source of peace and encouragement. The community of enslave Africans were able to use religion and spirituality as a way of overcoming the mental anguish of slavery on a daily basis. To a slave, religion was the most important aspect of their life. Nothing could come between their relationship with god. It was their rock, the only reason why they could wake up in the morning, the only way that they endured this most turbulent time in our history.
Slave owners used Christianity as justification for what they did to the slaves . One would think that being a religious person would introduce better values, and would have helped to end the evil acts of slavery. But being a more religious person made a slave owner harsher and tougher it made them go harder on slaves for no reason. Douglass literally considered the worst of slave owners to be the more religious people.. Were I to be again reduced to the chains of slavery, next to that enslavement, Having a religious slave master was the worst thing that happened to me .For of all slave master that I have ever met, religious slave owners are the worst ones. I have ever found them the meanest and cruelest, the most cruel and scared , of all others." In order to help slaves get through some of the bad conditions that they went through .Families should have been provided for kids in slavery but Instead, slavery separated kids from their friends and families so the kid were on their own, even the little ones not only through childhood, but likely for their whole life. According to the text,” Abolitionism arose out of a deep religious conviction that slave-holding was a sin that the truly god-fearing had the obligation to eliminate.” (DuBois, 2012, p. 268). In 1936, Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society implored that each woman in the land must do a Christian woman’s duty, and the result cannot fail to be instant, peaceful, unconditional deliverance. Unlike any other movement seen before, women along with men would join into open conflict with America’s basic political and religious institutions. Sarah and Angelina Grimke rose to the roles as the leaders for the movement. They made many speeches to men and women regarding the issue and even found themselves condemned from the church for their actions. The need for change was growing over the overwhelming feel for abolishment of slavery as well as a role for women. In the 1840s, many leaders seen from the abolitionist movement moved to seek not only freedom from slavery but for the future of women as a whole. The Grimkes defense of their equal right to champion slaves led many women into the women’s rights movement. Female abolitionists faced discrimination within the movement, this then led to the need for a women’s rights movement. Pushback was also seen when women who supported the abolishment for slavery were treated the same as those being prosecuted by white religious women and men who saw their views as incorrect. Around 1837, the General Association of Congregational Ministers of Massachusetts had issued their "Pastoral Letter," a response to the political activity of the Grimke’s, two sisters who were heavily active and public in their fight for anti-slavery reform. Today, women share the same equal rights and opportunities as men; nevertheless, that has not invariably been the case. Before the Jazz Age era, gender discrimination between men and women in society was considerably popular. Women were seen as inferior to men. Their jobs were to care for the home, children, and other domesticated duties while men were able to work, get an education, and become doctors or lawyers. Many women like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, Zora Hurston, to mention a few, seen the unfairness in women's rights and fought for equal rights for women through different movements, efforts, protests, and even marches to abolish women’s rights. As a consequence, women now pursue not only higher education and higher paid jobs/ businesses, but their rights. One of the world’s most controversial issues among churches of today is the role of a woman. Many people are confused about the duty of a woman and how she is supposed to serve God because of history. History taught us to never deny someone of gender, race, or even diversity since he or she has human rights. However, this issue should not be viewed as men versus women because this is not a political issue; instead, it should be viewed as the structural of a church. Also, when a man and a woman apply for the same job, the man will almost always be chosen. This has resulted in the amount of full-time working males increasing by 1 million within a years time, and the number for full-time working women remained nearly the same. To this day, females are not treated equally to males even though almost a century has gone by from 1920 when women gained their deserved suffrage rights and other rights of equivalent importance. Both men and women are standing up to spread the awareness of the meager changes to women’s rights throughout the years. One way to raise awareness is to write a book, and many books have been made about the lack of equality rights for women. In the novel The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the main character Lily witnesses several equality rights between men and woman in the way that females are treated by males, which has become a major social issue in today’s society.
Imagine living in a society where an individual’s future and way of life is solely based on their gender. Does that sound preposterous? The United States is one of many nations to possess a Constitution incorporating rights awarded to every citizen; however, several rights are violated daily. The Fourteenth Amendment holds the most commonly used phrase, “equal protection of the laws,” allowing equal rights for every citizen of the United States. One of the most violated rights, under the Fourteenth Amendment, is gender discrimination. Many factors contribute to inequality between men and women in our everyday lives. Some factors include the early history of internal war conflicts, leadership roles, along with the physical build of men and women.
One of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s primary goals of the Women’s Rights Project’s litigation was to prove that stereotypical treatment of gender under the law was unconstitutional. It was Ginsburg’s goal to make the Court realize that “the law’s differential treatment of men and women, rationalized as reflecting “natural” differences between the sexes, historically had tended to contribute to women’s subordination” (Ginsburg 11). Ginsburg carefully selected cases which she felt would produce the greatest results. To do this, she “pursue(d) a series of cases that illuminate(d) the most common instances of gender distinctions in the law (Ginsburg 14). In three cases, Reed v. Reed, Frontiero v. Richardson, and Craig v. Boren, Ginsburg was successful in arguing that legal distinctions on the basis of sex qualified as suspect classifications. Therefore the state must show a compelling interest in its legislation, and “must demonstrate that the means are necessarily related to the ends sought to be achieved by the statue and are the least restrictive” (Mezey 16). Today, it is debatable whether women are equal to men in the eyes of the law. However, without the Women’s Rights Project’s litigation of the nineteen seventies, women would be remain subjected to stereotypical legal treatment and thus would still be regulated to an inferior status of citizenship.

Throughout history equality has been debated. Equality is defined as getting respect and giving respect regardless of gender or culture through fair treatment and maximized happiness. Balance and harmony are developed from the application of ethical theories to aid society in defining the meaning to gender equality rather than debating the issue. Therefore, defining gender equality should be the role of society by utilizing ethical theories. Of course humans will always search for different solutions to create fairness, but factors such as human greed, ignorance of mass populations, and even biological aspects stagnates the process of equality. The oldest and most relevant discussion on equality lies with the difference of sex; man versus woman. Initially, men, because of their physical superiority, were given the prospects many women never even dreamt to have. Conversely, as time has progressed, women have fought this unfair treatment with demands of suffrage and similar rights to those of their male equivalents. Greatly enough, this generation has done an exceptional job in the challenge of overcoming sexism and inequality. However, will this search for equality ever end? When can we say we have created an equal race of men and women? The fact of the matter is that it is truly impossible to have equality between the sexes because of predisposed circumstances that are not easily controllable in the slightest bit.
