Do we truly understand how the meaning to equality among men and women affect society. Jobs, health, and education are affected by what transpires from the meaning to gender equality. Throughout history equality has been debated. Equality is defined as getting respect and giving respect regardless of gender or culture through fair treatment and maximized happiness. Balance and harmony are developed from the application of ethical theories to aid society in defining the meaning to gender equality rather than debating the issue. Therefore, defining gender equality should be the role of society by utilizing ethical theories. The theories can be consequentialist or nonconsequentialist acts that develop and maintain good morality and ethical …show more content…

A nonconsequentialist act is the deontology theory. Deontology is a moral obligation or duty to act relating to a principle or rule. Deontology requires the act of humanity. It is never the treatment as a means to an end. A rule of deontology is that one should act in a manner that maxim the act intending to develop the act as a universal law. However, deontology can obligate someone to act in a way that seems wrong and unethical (Mossier, 2013). It is a rigid theory that fails to capture the complex issues that arise. Therefore, one would need to act as everyone would act in that specific situation. When applying the deontology theory, one should focus on the will of the person acting, the person’s intention of carrying out the act, and the rule according to which the act is carried out. In article titled “Groundwork for the Metaphysic of Morals” by Kant (2008) reads, “so the action’s moral value doesn’t depend on whether what is aimed at in it is actually achieved, but solely on the principle of the will from which the action is done, irrespective of anything the faculty of desire may be aiming at (p. 10).” The act of respect and fair treatment sends a clear message to society regarding the social position to gender equality. It promotes a better and happier environment for self and others based on the duty, rule or principle in any situation. Nodding (2012) clearly identifies there is a difference in treatment among men and women in the article titled “Maternal Factor: Two Paths to Mortality.” According to Nodding (2012) writes, “It is nearly acceptable for a woman to act like a man, but it is not acceptable for a man to act like a woman (p. 216).” Nodding (2012) sheds light on the attitude to the principle of acceptance regarding gender.
