The leader I chose to interview was Shannon Engler. Shannon Engler, MS, RN is the director of Mental Health Services at Bryan Health. Shannon has more than 23 years of experience in behavioral health leadership. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Nursing, in 1993, with a master’s degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing. Shannon is active in multiple community initiatives including prior service as commissioner to the Nebraska legislature for behavioral health reform. Both facilities will have the same Medical Director and one Director of Nursing running both locations. Management personnel will improve their communication by meeting once a week to discuss and brainstorm ideas; bill verification will be consistent in the two facilities; there will be a company wide purchasing system. I have had the privilege to work with an incredible nurse leader over the past two years. This particular nurse leader shares my passion for population health and case management for the support of patients in their homes and keeping patients safe and healthy. The purpose of this interview was to obtain further knowledge about the role desired by the interviewer. By attaining information from a practicing Master’s prepared nurse, the interviewer will develop a deeper understanding of the career advancement and potential opportunities that are available in the local community.
Mental health teams generally comprise of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers, but other therapists such as family therapists, psychotherapists and counsellors might also become involved in the care of the patient (Perkins & Repper 1998).
The professional mental health counselor I interviewed is my faculty advisor and her name is Dr. Konja Kleeper. She has many credentials and certifications and, as my faculty advisor, is aligned with my licensure and career goals. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). She also informed me that any credentials beyond the LPCC and NCC are up to my own discretion.

I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, “Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. But I have learned that I now have to use the least amount of words to get my point across.”
During my interview with Regina Martinez, BS RN and currently an Assistant Director of a home health agency, I discovered her leadership style matched the above quote. Martinez had extensive experience in management prior to joining the medical field. As a single working mother, she worked her way up from waitress to manger of a popular seafood restaurant. However, her dream had always been to become a nurse and she began her medical career as a certified nurse’s aide (CNA), while working through college. She graduated from nursing school with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and has been a Registered Nurse (RN) for more than two decades. She quickly earned the respect of doctors and fellow nurses, becoming a Charge Nurse on the floors she worked. She has worked as Medical Surgery nurse, emergency room, and as Director of Nursing for home health and long-term care facilities where she was responsible for over 150 employees.

Her educational background includes a diploma as a Registered Nurse from People’s Hospital School of Nursing in Ohio (1947), Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Major in Mental Health/Public Health, Minor in Psychology, from University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) (1957), and Master of Science in Mental Health from UCLA (1966). She became engaged in a graduate work for UCLA in the Mental Health/Public Health Consultation where she gained interest in community mental health as an emerging avenue for nursing practice. We have leaders here at Clark Atlanta University who do everything in their power to make sure students are graduating on time, and receiving the education that they deserve. Although leadership on the other hand is defined as the state of being a leader. A person has to possess certain qualities to have the leadership skills that others have. With leadership and behavioral health , if someone was dealing with difficult circumstance you as a leader with those leadership qualities can help the person benefit in a good way. Also it is connected with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that “leads” public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. The information that was provided shows how we can be just as great as SAMHSA is because they lead the behavioral health initiative. Anyone can be a leader and have leadership skills, it take a wise one to see the connection between behavioral health and being a leader of anything a person puts their mind to. Jenna Huseinovic is an intern at the Shelter. She attends Palm Beach Atlantic University and is working on her Master's degree in Counseling Psychology.
