"Shameless" was originally a British TV show airing in 2004, but was adapted in America in 2011 by director, writer, and producer John Wells. Shameless depicts a poor, dysfunctional family on the south side of Chicago. Frank Gallager is the neglectful father of six: Fiona, Phillip, Ian, Debbie, Carl, and Liam. Frank spends his days at the bar or in search of money while the kids learn to take care of themselves. Fiona Gallager is the oldest child and main character who takes on the role of being a mother to her siblings. Their real mother, Monica, is a mentally ill addict who means well but is rarely present. With 11 seasons, Shameless dives into many heavy topics without sugarcoating anything, while maintaining a humorous atmosphere. Shameless showcases the harsh reality of many struggling families who were dealt a "bad" hand in life but show resilience through their bonds and growth as individuals. On the other hand, it also showcases individuals who go down bad paths in life and face the real consequences. The official rating of R is honest and accurate because the show is admittedly raunchy and not something you would want to watch with a young child. Jennifer Vineyard, a movie critic, says that what kept her watching shamelessly wasn't Frank's "never-ending search for the next free drink and his continual hatching of implausible get-rich-quick schemes" but "the ways in which his children tried to navigate the world in his absence." She also says that while "Shameless offers a ton of fascinating and complex characters in its South Side ecosystem" she really favored Fiona, like many other fans.
