There will be places, people, or other things in life that has more meaning to someone to symbolize something else. In the essay “Shame,” Gregory writes “Everybody’s got a Helene Tucker, a symbol of everything you want.” On December 2nd, 1998, that was the day that I met my Helene Tucker. My Helene Tucker or symbol is my mother who represents the hard working, loving, and the most caring people there are. My mother comes to symbolize everything a person would want to be. As can be seen in the first paragraph, the first characteristic about my mother that symbolizes everything a person would want to be is how hard working she is. My mother works hard as a single parent to provide for my sister and I. She has raised my sister and I on her own and has worked really hard so we are able to have nice things. As a mother, my mom plays both parent roles as a single parent. She comes to watch most of my soccer games and makes sure I always have what I need. As a mother, my mom’s number one job is to make sure I’m safe. She does this by calling me constantly throughout the day to make sure she knows where I’m at and to know that I’m safe. Without hesitation, my mom puts my life ahead of hers at all times. In addition, my mother also shows her love through being a nurse. She puts extra effort towards being a nurse to help people. She loves to help people and she always does her best to give her patients what they need such as medicine. Again, she also always seems to put her patients first. Furthermore, my mom shows her love by loving to be a nurse. All she talks about is being a nurse since nursing is what she enjoys the most.
